What did we learn yesterday?

406

There’s a question I have heard over a long time from football people, “What did we learn today?”  It is usually asked by a coach who wants his player(s)  to figure out the change he wants to make.  So what did we learn yesterday?

If any doubt remains that the current Celtic squad are very effective as 3-5-2 and relatively ineffective as 4-2-3-1, it can only be from someone who was on Twitter most of the game.

Gordon Strachan endured some torrid criticisms as Celtic manager.  I am sure this informed his pre-match comments on the “Twitterati’s” verdict on the tactical deployment against Ferencvaros.  Gordon assured us Neil Lennon knows the players better than anyone, especially online fans, and he picked his strongest team to start on Wednesday and again on Sunday.

On any level, this is true.  Neil Lennon knows his squad better than any of us, just has Gordon did in his day.  Both men are also tactically better versed than most of us could ever hope to be.  But the sight of two central defenders making rampaging runs at different times late in the game against Motherwell, surely will convince the final doubters: three at the back, two up front and leave the middle five fluid.

Tontine Tim…you are an encyclopaedia…help please. Two games fuzzy in the old memory banks. First, Dundee Utd at Tannadice, black and white strip 5-5? Also Pars game 4-4?

Oops! Third game v St Mirren in the cup. Drew in Paisley, then 4-4 in the replay and finally Saints were Neilly Mochaned 5-0 at CP…Is my memory playing tricks?

  2. FANADPATRIOT yes i was at parkhead that day, think it was arbroath we were playing, remember someone with a transistor radio screaming in delight ,ach happy memories 😎

  3. Quite interesting to see that Dedrick Bhoyata, once of this parish, was described in World Soccer as ‘A mountain for Hertha Berlin and a true leader’.

I don’t remember many on CQN describing him in such glowing terms :-)

Hell, even VVD got a fair bit of criticism during his time at Celtic.

All on tonight. Not only master tacticians, without a coaching badge amongst them. Those Badges overrated anyway, but we have Fortune Tellers, giving us the full rundown for a game 6 weeks away.Ancestor denyers.

Ageists, getting the ages wrong.Oh,and Big Packy.WBC,hinting that he is no Wee.

    Whatever next.

You are damn tooting TurkeyBhoy, those coaching Badges are overrated.

Why do you think that Lionel Messi, is not a happy bunny with Barcelona

right now? Because the past Barcelona Coach, found his said coaching

Badged, in a Chinese Fortune Cookie.

Anyway, their is no harm, in giving out, constructive suggestions/food for

thought. Put it this way TurkeyBhoy, it’s better to say somethings, about

our glaring flaws & archiles heels, than not saying nothing @ all.

Even your past comments on here, have emphisised this point, I’ll leave

that with you, to take that into account as well.

  8. On their game Julliene and Ajer are good…..but I like to see a “take no prisoners” type in there

Something I think we lack at the minute

If Oli is heading off to the English Riviera, how much do you think we should be asking for him?

Personally, I think the English clubs have been in a collective state of insanity for some time regarding transfer prices- £50m for Wan Bissaka, £50m for Chilwell and £40m for Ake shows that they continue to spend like there’s no tomorrow. Of course, those buys were all English on English but Oli is still young, on fringes of French set up and has scored in Europe. He has 2 years left on his contract.

I think we should be setting a price of £15m with a view to getting £10m.

    What’s the view??

    Great news. 👍

Just hope it’s a 5 year permanent deal.

Shane Duffy could be our future captain/leader.

  13. Note Man Yoo apparently bidding £45m for a Dutch player I ain’t heard of. Down there they have the view “SCOTTISH League” offer half the value

  14. Dexter P. Bampot on

If Duffy is in, does that mean Lenny is going 3 at the back with Ajer and Jullien or that Ajer (or even Jullien) is away?

Jullien was a hefty price but we would still look to make a couple of million on him. We could of course make a wee fortune on Ajer right now. Could we make even more in a season or 2?

I don’t want either to be sold and would prefer the 3 but with the CL exit I think there must be some temptation to cash in

Way too low. EPL teams spend £10 m on a new set of bibs for training! -))

  16. Delaneys Dunky on

If we get Duffy signed, then along with Barkas, Turnbull, Elyounoussi and Ajeti all in, we have done tremendous business this transfer window so far. No big hitters out and we are laughing.

  17. I think Julliene is here for a bit yet. Duffy could be part of a 3 with Julliene and Ajer. If Ajer moves on, which is possible, I’d like Duffy plus one other

You’re right that in comparison to what’s down there we SHOULD be getting £20m but I just think that given the Armstrong precedent and the general level of payments for SPL players, we’d do well to be getting £20m.

Having said that, if Leeds have put in an opening bid of £20m for Kent…..

  19. Dexter P. Bampot on

Should Celtic be suggesting Shane Long coming North during any Ntcham negotiations?? Just saying….

  20. Dexter

I think not only us but the rest of Scottish football are wakening up to the fact that we’ve been getting ripped off for years. Recent transfers from here to there over the past couple of years have shown that

I was at all three games. 1-1 in Paisley. It looked like one of those games where the first team to score would win. St Mirren scored….and we equalised straight from the KO .

Replay. We were down 1-3 at Celtic Park , fought back to 3-3 and ended up 4-4 ( AET?).

I thought it was 5-2 in the final game with Neil Mochan ( a coverted full-back so the Ryan Christie `experiment` was nothing new !) scoring all five.

    Dexter P. Bampot,

If I was Celtic, I would be looking for @ least 35 Million Pounds. After all, down in cash strapped

Sly TV Money Rolled English Footy Nowadays, 25 Million Pounds, is Peanuts to them.

We should not let our good players, go on the cheap.

They should be paying the going rate, end of. So which Club is interested in buying Oliver-N.

Tell Me Folks, is it rumoured to be Southampton?

Tontine Tim…found the first two games…

Tannadice– Dundee Utd game Jan 1962 we won 5-4 (having been up 5-1) I remember Paddy Crerand scoring the 5th goal…

East End park Dunfermline game Nov 1966 we won 5-4 (having been down 4-2)

Now for those St Mirren games…

  24. I reckon clubs are beginning to see that the players we have offer value and are willing now to pay over £20m. Forster, VVD, Armstrong and now Tierney have all helped change the viewpoint of the quality of players from the league, if not the league itself. McGinn helps too.

I reckon we will get about £25m when Edouard goes (in a couple of years) 👍🏼

I agree that would be an excellent window such a shame the horse has bolted.

Some strong views on coaching badges, wonder if posters can give us a detailed description of what’s required to obtain said badges.

Maybe say the UEFA A licence or even level 4 coaching.

These are no attendance courses, especially if your not a high profile ex player.

  26. I can’t decide what I find more baffling:

Playing without a centre forward or having the stadium announcer scream out the goalscorer’s name to an empty stadium ? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  27. weebobbycollins on

Hot Smoked…thank you. I too attended the three games: and you may well be right with the 5-2 scoreline. Neilly Mochan scored all five goals…I seem to remember the Love St game was either icy or foggy…John Colrain was a favourite player of mine at that time…

    Wow! Thanks.
