Asset Management Day

739

You and I are old enough to remember the grief when a star player left to go to England.  Today, with Odsonne Edouard’s anticipated departure, grief is replaced by relief.  This is nothing to do with the player’s ability, he will be missed on the field, but success on the grass is determined by the astuteness in the Asset Management game.  If Celtic are to enhance their chances with the former, they need to optimise the latter.  Eddie has to leave with financial compensation coming the other way.

Whatever Crystal Palace pay, a significant portion will to go Paris Saint-Germain (widely reported as 40%).  We paid €10m when the player signed permanently in 2018, so although the money will have an impact on current and future trading, we will scarcely break even on the player, a sign that his value (€10m plus sell-on clause) did not appreciate during his time in Glasgow.

Ryan Christie, like Stuart Armstrong three years ago, is one I hoped we would be able to hold onto.  Ryan spent three years going nowhere (if you discount loans to Inverness and Aberdeen) before he transformed Celtic when coming on as a halftime substitute against Hearts at Murrayfield in October 2018.  Celtic started that season poorly with Brendan Rodgers unable to conjure a fix until a series of injuries gave Ryan his chance.  He played a significant role in rescuing Celtic’s season, and Brendan’s reputation, as they secured the Treble Treble and remained a key player in the subsequent treble and European campaigns.

Money talks and Celtic players listen when wages above £50k per week are mentioned (Edouard will earn significantly above this).  With only six months left on his current deal, I doubt we will earn much for Ryan, but the principle remains the same; churn them before they leave for free.

Filipe Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis are waiting in the tunnel, so the ‘F5 hours’ should be busy.

  1. So pretty positive window but with much work to be done in January to get where we need to be.

Some negative comments about some areas of the team being weak and I agree 100%.

It was never going to be ideal especially with the mess inherited by Dom and Ange.

It would be proactive of us now to be scouting and adding to certain areas in January where we know we are light.

So come January Barkas out – one new backup goalie in.

LB – not convinced we are strong at all there currently.

One dynamic central midfielder whose technically gifted and physical preferably with experience and one CF.

We need to hope that some of the unknown quantities we have bought turn out to be great additions.

  2. Gotta say cap doffed to Big Dom and Big AP………….

I think they’ve worked together as a unit to do a lot in a short space of time.

Making new teams work in a management sense with competing ways of doing things, with big personalities can be one of the biggest challenges and for us the early signs are good.

I’m grateful and a bit more hopeful.

  3. MAYBE … Ange will play Kyogo and Giorgios thru the middle…with Abada and Jota ” Sharing” first team selection on either wing, with one or the other staring on the subs bench ?

After all, Big Ange admitted that he shouldnt have played Kyogo on the wing at Ipox…so maybe hes thinking of teaming them both up , thru the middle ?

ive NO IDEA if Jota or Cammy Vickers are any good, but I am hopeful that Giorgios WILL live up to expectations given his goal scoring record in the Dutch league , and that He and Kyogo will be a great partnership asap ?

I also have faith in Joe Hart, Joslip and young Adam Montgomery….

I was hoping to see Barkas and Ajeti go elsewhere in this windae…but maybe we are gonna be stuck with them if NO other clubs want them ?

Sad to see Eddy and Ryan go…but its maybe for the best…and as for The Griff….MAYBE he will look back one day and regret how his time at Celtic has ended…HE was a ” Fans Favourite at one time” didnt you know ?

  4. I’m always wary of a player that has had more loans than the rangers , still if he does good , if not he won’t get much game time . Young scales could eventually play centre half .big tall lad with speed and aggresion in him a bit to learn ,but learn he will . Tony ralston may get tried in midfield he is one tough lad , Kent didn’t fancy his attention anyway. maybe a course or two with a sprint coach would benefit him . The international break will give ange a week or so to assess what he or someone else has bought .HH

  5. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Sevco Europa League package offering to its season ticket holders is 65% more expensive than Celtic’s.

    Yip. You heard that right.

    Sixty five percent.

Let’s see who in the SMSM is first to break the story.

Some are happy being unhappy. Don’t understand it myself but there you go.

Personally, I think it has been a more than decent window. Looking forward to the restart.

  7. Gorgeous blue sky and house martins in a frenzy!

Is this the day they head south?

They look like they’re excited about something!

Or mibbe they’re happy the window has closed.

    Who knows?

  8. Jim Tim

Ralston had plenty of loans and came good with decent coaching.

The Spurs lad has improved every side he went to on loan. All at a decent level.

Just because the MSM emphasise 6 loans as a negative does not make it one. Esp from a side with the depth Spurs has and a kid that age.

  9. Weebobbycollins on

Back to Basics…they were going to make it 67% more expensive but were informed that the number 67 is sectarian.

  10. Eddy and Ryan can NOT be expecting to win any Trophies or to be playing in Europe most seasons with the Clubs that they have joined…so I have to believe that their moves are purely MONEY motivated by way of Wages down south ?

I cant really blame any player for moving for Higher Wages elsewhere….but maybe one day both of them will also look back and regret leaving Celtic….Then again…maybe NOT ?

    HH.

  11. Reading the Bournemouth fans forum regarding Vickers they were desperate to get him back said the guy was solid and one of the best centre half’s in championship.

  12. I also wonder IF Gary Hooper regrets moving from Celtic ?

How has his career gone since he left Celtic Park ?

I really enjoyed Hooper in the Hoops….and banging in the goals.

What a pity he left when he did.

Did the House Martins not become the Beautiful SOUTH ? enjoyed the craic on Saturday btw 👍🍺🍺

  14. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Watched CCV playing last season and he looked OK.

Spurs have obviously decided that he will not make it at the top level of the EPL – but even if that’s true, it doesn’t make him crap.

He is unlikely to be the next VVD, KT or Kris Ajer – but I would think he is well capable of doing a job in the SPL.

  15. Huge rebuild required and still we sell more than we buy.

The positive spin is that we are saving some of the cash for Jan.

The negative spin is that our finances are shot and DD wants some security / cash in the bank.

One horrible season and our leverage in the selling market is shot.

KA / OE / RC — all away for £29mill plus some add ons.

I hope the buying clubs had the decency to wear a mask.

Should go down as the perfect legacy of PL — second rate property bean counter / carrying a rich man’s bag and being totally out of his depth. AP is now carrying the club

The cost of his multiple failures must now be up at £200mill gross.

Yet still they clap and his drinking buddies are now bringing up our situation in 2002.

He must be doing something right if he can command this level of devotion.

    Hopefully lessons have been learned.

Hopefully we have an opps guy in charge who understands the need for a growth agenda.

Another year of stagnation leading to collapse and we will be toast.

The squad isn’t in surplus as it has been since 2016.

We have no safety net left.

Now for an overhaul of the coaching staff / medical staff / conditioning / analysis.

Then comes the hard stuff like the catering / match day experience / facilities.

Low hanging fruit for DMcK is PL can be kept away from the decision making.

Consequently we have made some good progress just a case that we could have done better if we were not a selling club as we are at the moment.

And then we have the B team / the ladies team / the youths.

AP has got some amount of work to do.

Plus JH is now worth Eu 10mill and he is in the CL.

I wonder who is laughing now regarding his career trajectory and the part we played in it?

Fair play to the guy — seemingly a bit of a snider when it comes to comps but he worked at it and he will be playing at a level we can only dream of this season.

He always had the talent / basics just a case that he needed coaching and support — specifically help with his decision making when he has the ball at his feet.

    .

We couldn’t be bothered and how we have lost out.

Also another one to watch out for — AMcC leaving StJ for £1mill max.

Will he go far — did we lose out on him?

  16. Goooood morning Cqn from a lovely sunny morning in Springburn (work).

    In Ange we trust.

Would have liked 1 or 2 others in but hey a good start from Ange and Dom the board probably shat themselves and said enough. No More.

Ange go to work on this set of players and make us proud and I am sure he will.

    D :)

  17. Well my wee early punt yesterday about Carter Vickers came through. He is well thought of in the States, and had a very good loan spell last season in the Championship. We will see.

Unbelievable that St Johnstone could let Mc Cann go for 1 million,or 1.2.Someone at that club needs their toy dolls parted. They were aware that we were interested but were punting him around the 3 million mark yesterday. Why not contact us and go for a deal.Say 1 million now,and 1 million,January,or similar. At least ask.

    Shocking management.

  18. Never thought I would say this, but thank God for the International break. All the new boys at Lennoxtown by the weekend.

  19. I think it was important to let Eddie go. My feeling is that he was dragging the mood down. In just about every game we hoped to see the Eddie of two years ago and instead we were left with the Eddie of last season. We also got a decent fee for him when his value was surely diminishing going by his performances.

Like many, I had hoped that Ryan Christie would sign a new contract. He fitted Ange’s template perfectly but he had decided to leave. It’s no coincidence that Ryan, Kris Ajer and Stuart Armstrong are close friends and they all got their moves down south. I’m fairly certain that when Ryan and Kris listened to Stuart regarding his wages their minds would have been made up to leave.

I,for one, am reasonably content with the dealings in the window. Yes we could have got more players in to strengthen some key positions but it helped that Ange was able to revitalise Tony Ralston and improve Stevie Welsh. We have Euan Henderson and Adam Montgomery waiting in the wings. We also have Liam Shaw. We are paying these guys so let’s use and improve them. There are games on which these guys should be trusted to slot into the team. Not all at the same time but rest some regular players and use the young guys judiciously.

I think it’s also important to now properly scout players who will help Ange win this season’s title. We should aim to buy two in January and another two at the end of the season. I also think we should spend as much as we can possibly afford on these 4 players. They must be proven players and approved by Ange.

Celtic will never pay £6.5m for Jota at the end of the season so he’ll only be here for the current season. I would prefer that in the near future we target good, reliable defenders.

I’m going to take the day off CQN because I realise that a lot of posters are disappointed with the window and I can understand that. I don’t want my current feel good mood to be lowered. I also hate the International break and it often leads to arguing on here so that’s another reason for taking a break.

Let’s all get behind Ange and try to be positive until the next transfer window.

    Hail! Hail!

  20. Good morning CQN

Ange had to quickly change a disastrous dressing room caused by mismanagement, recruitment was always going to be the key ingrediant, both ins, and outs, equally the unidentifible individuals from the invisible recruitment structure making these decisions was a reasonable concern for many Celtic fans, Kyogo has been an instant success and so far it appears we have got a bargain, that quality of striker is usually measured in the tens of millions rather than less than 5, I won’t play the psychological idiots battle of positive/negative views on players who either haven’t worn the shirt yet or have had limited mins in it, that’s footballing idiocy, why so many who positively pronounced joy and 10IAR at the same point last season following a “brilliant transfer window” are now doing likewise makes no sense, equally forecasts of doom are to be dismissed, Ange and the squad now need to be assessed in the coming months when the reality of the performances and most importantly the results will determine success or failure, the league campaign has to take off now as in a 2 horse race we cannot fall behind too far so early in the season.

Henrik Larrson would have been taxied to the airport after his first game, those who watched Karamoko Dembele as a youth proclaimed we had the next Lionel Messi just a couple of examples of forecasting future success or failure it is a hazardous game to play, and those who get it wrong rarely admit their error, every transfer is a gamble with so many variable factors to be considered best wait till we see them week in, week out.

    aff oot

  21. Frankly no idea how the next few months will go, which is the beauty of the unpredictable nature of the game. Bit of a curates egg as a squad and an awful lot of heavy lifting going on here with regards to the inevitable January window we all agree is pretty hard to deal in, even if it is for a knackered Japanese left back coming off a Feb-Dec season….

We’re still dealing with the legacy stuff of wanatways and a poor infrastructure and far too much being asked of Ange with little or no expertise around him. I think the board have both reasonably invested and also been spooked by the COVID financials.

It’s a season where the shitshow Dom and Ange have inherited will not be solved overnight and so we should continue to hope rather than expect any entitled league winning team with so much more to do.

Welcome to all the new Bhoys if 60% of them are successful buys we will have done OK.

Why would we not pay Eu 6.5mill for JPNF also known as Jo?

If he has a good season playing in the SPL and EuL — why wouldn’t he be worth that amount?

If we want to sell players for £20 / 30 / 50mill then we need to bring in the right level of young players.

    That is at 16 / 18 / 20 and they might cost £1 / 3 / 5mill even £10mill in extremis.

The trick is to coach them / develop them / improve them — so no more NL level coaching appointments.

This season is all about rebuilding the squad from the wreckage NL / PL left.

Hopefully next year we can start to plan for the future.

  26. As such the purchase of Ali McCann would certainly fit the bill. McCann has evidenced a capability to shine in the Scottish Premiership and is also a domestic double winner of the domestic cup competitions. Any concerns as to whether the player could transfer that to a higher level have been dispelled by excellent international performances for Northern Ireland and against European opposition, particularly that performance against Galatasaray.

From the Celtic Star blog yesterday. Unbelievable.£1 million to Preston.

  35. Good morning folks,

Fairly happy with the transfer dealings during the window. Ange and Dom have inherited a huge mess from the previous incumbents. Only a few short weeks ago, after the Hearts defeat it seemed like winning the league was a pipe dream.

However Ange has shown a small glimpse of his exciting style of play planned for the team with high scoring wins in the league at Celtic park and unexpectedly for me, also got us through to the EL group stages by beating a decent Dutch team. (Although it was hard on the old ticker to watch at times).

I watched a few of Sevco’s games on TV, both at home and in Europe and to me they are a very ordinary side whom in my humble opinion have peaked and as the season progresses I believe will show them on a downward spiral compared to last season, both at home and in Europe.

I think we were very unlucky not to get at least a point on Sunday against them. And with a bit more clinical finishing may even have stole a victory. Therefore I am not too worried about Sundays result as I believe we will go from strength to strength and they will go in the opposite direction.

I believe we will further improve the team and squad in the next transfer window also.

I am very confident we will win the league, and may even surprise us with another treble.

We are only at the beginning of an improvement process, both on and off the park and think we have the correct people in Ange and Dom.

    HH Dan
