Avoiding bad Fortune

789

I read our treble-winning captain, Tom Boyd, in the Herald advising Celtic to retain players who want away or decline to sign new contracts, until after their Champions League qualification ties, an idea we discussed some time ago.  Tellingly he added, “They will see when they go down south it’s not always as bright down there as they think it will be”, perhaps a reference to his time in the Chelsea defence.

There is unlikely to be much difference in value achieved between selling before or after the qualifiers, so as long as the players stay on-side with Neil Lennon and the club, there will be no reason to sell before then.

Recruiting is a different matter.  Celtic will want players in as soon as possible but with all in-demand talent, selling clubs have little reason to cash-in before the business end of August.  For me, there are some on the list we are currently linked with (I’m trying to avoid stepping onto the speculation train as long as possible) who I’ll be happy to see sign elsewhere.  Half the battle in transfer windows is to avoid the bad Fortune of splurging money on players who don’t work out.

You gotta give ‘Missing Andy’ a try. Great Indie mod band. Also worth a listen are ‘The Rifles’.

Canny blame him for that,Kate was a honey in her day.

And one in Kate Bush is worth two in the hand…..

  7. Am I right in thinking that playing in the CL qualifiers for us would rule out the player from playing in the CL group stages for a new club? I am particularly thinking about Big Vic as he is the most likely to secure a move to a top club and Arsenal have been linked. You need to think that being able to play him in the CL would add value.

Likewise I had a mate (yeah none now before any of the smart arses start) who lived in Camden, he was raging when WHU sold him, it just never clicked for the boy for some reason, clearly he had talent another that never worked out for us.

Posters on a Catania blog seem to think that he has signed for Derby . General tone is relief all round . Absolute prejudice about Scottish football saw him being written off by people who had never seen him .. Punters seemed to be bemused that Catania had made 2 bids for a Scottish player.

  13. Derry City are refused entry to Europa League by Uefa

Derry City have been refused entry into next season’s Europa League competition by Uefa.

The European football governing body has taken the decision because the club went into liquidation just over two years ago.

That led to a European ban for three years and this is the final year of the Candystripes’ suspension.

Derry would have been guaranteed at least 110,000 Euros for participation in the competition.

The re-formed club, with support from the FAI, asked for the rule to be relaxed but Uefa refused to relent.

On paper, Derry’s third-place finish in last year’s Airtricity League Premier Division should have earned them a Europa League spot.

Derry City chairman Philip O’Doherty received the bad news in a phone call shortly before lunchtime on Tuesday.

“Because the new club has only been in existence for two years – not three years – we had to apply for a derogation of the rule,” said the Derry chairman.

    Play media

“We paid a lot of football debts that were nothing to do with us, but from the previous club but apparently we’re not going to be accepted.

“I’ve just spoken to the manager (Declan Devine). He’s absolutely gutted as are the rest of the board.”

The club does have the option of launching an appeal to the European Court of Arbitration but O’Doherty said that this “hugely expensive option is unlikely”.

“We’re going to have a look at that when we get the statement but it would be unlikely that we would be successful.

“We did a very, very good application and the questions we were asked, they were answered positively.

“The amount of money we have spent taking care of previous responsibilities, I would have thought would have been enough to basically bend the rules.

“The players will be gutted as well, not getting the chance to play on a larger stage and with the success they had a few years ago and obviously the recent success of Shamrock Rovers.

“It’s a big, big disappointment for everyone involved.”

  14. wycombebhoy,

Glad to hear all’s well, I’m not out the same and without the Irish Club there is no one place we gather now, though we watch a fair few games down the Liberal and they are looking at joining up with the remnants of the IC>

“Big Paul was asking the other day about Brentford, maybe a Wycombe Celts day out…”

Yeah, he mentioned it, sounds like a good one, we should definitely make that happen.

Watched the Final with him and the MBB – Motherwell Born Bluenose amongst others, was a good day:-)

  18. istanbulcelt – not sure how old you are but if you’re old enough to remember or know the music of Magazine and/ or Gang of Four you should check out Savages’ album Silence Yourself. All girl band that sounds like the two above fronted by Patti Smith.

Nick Cave’s most recent album is great.

The most recent album by Low – The Invisible Way is also great (as is they’re entire back catalogue).

Queens of the Stone Age released their new album yesterday “… Like Clockwork” it’s worth checking.

Slightly more leftfield and electronic-y but still in the singer/songwriter mould is John Grant – Pale Green Ghosts.

If you were to give me the ole Chinese burn I’d say the best album I’ve heard this year is ‘Night’ by Simone Dinnerstein [classically trained joanna thumper] and Americana princess wee Tift Merritt.

A date with Kate would have been a fine thing but I’d have felt the need to tell her -no singing please .!

I had pals who lived in Lewisham . Mrs S of T and I went to visit said pals . Said pals took us to a Lewisham boozer —- a band was playing / Kate was singing . . She didn’t float my boat but Mrs S of T was irritated enough to express her irritation in Italian just in case our hosts were offended by her choice of parolacchia.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Martinez took wee Shaun to Everton with him. Could see Wigan getting around 4-5m for him too. Think we slipped up there letting him go. Always thought he could’ve been a “Lubo” type player.

Re Kate Bush. A guy from Greenock (possibly Gourock since he was a bit posh) knocked her back many many years ago. She was looking for someone to play sax in her band. She wasn’t known then…so he refused sax to Kate Bush. The Pete Best of the sax world.
