Away from pubic scrutiny

272

Appointing a manager is always a stressful time. Being left to get on with business away from scrutiny is rare, so it is ideal when all scrutiny falls on one particular candidate, leaving you free to meet and discuss plans with others.

You can be absolutely sure Celtic are speaking to more than one candidate, no decisions have been made and the ball is still in play. Meetings that are in the public domain are nothing more than that, many more have not made it into the newspapers.

Be a great poster for a young teens bedroom. Swapping out my Marilyn Monroe one as I type.

  2. So having caught out some fella in Glasgow, there for a stag do, we’ve now mistaken a couple of auld billionaires golfing for imminent white smoke?

    Some craic this…

  3. So to avoid public scrutiny, get yer 2 Exec Directors and major shareholder running aboot in yer private jet. A big massive squirrel to appoint someone else.

    Really?

Maybe Michael Nicolson and Chris McKay have the final decision on the nominations put forward from both DD and Lawwell camps – after interviewing all candidates?

I have asked this before and will do so now again. How many of those who contribute anti-Peter Lawwell views on here have actually spoken to him? If we knew that we would be in a better position to know what value to put on their views..

    What’s your point, mate ?

I never spoke to Maggie Thatcher but i know what I think of her…

  6. My inner green peace wants to hang O’brien and Desmond by their dangly bits for using private jets for a round of golf.

Destroying the planet for those who will be around long after these two old rich farts are covered in dirt.

  7. If Rodgers is our new manager will people get off Lawwell’s back? Peter Lawwell HAS always had to do what Dermot Desmond demands. DD makes all the important decisions. PL as CEO did as he was told by the largest shareholder.

  8. So, what big elusive tart, away from public scrutiny, have we got gift wrapped and waiting if big Brendan says No !

Surely all bases covered, with some bearded & baldy hipster Euro type who plays last man back as his signature tactic, already mentioned.

    “Away from pubic scrutiny…”

Shirley a typo P67 ? While I don’t want to get into the cross-hairs of an editorial spat but with balls still in play, are you saying that pubes have been trimmed down, scratched entirely while others are being hidden outta sight ??

  10. quadrophenian on

If that kinda scrutiny does go on, all that jetting around is more understandable given how CFC clearly does its in-depth managerial interviews face to face and – even better – in the showers.

It should have nothing do with Peter Lawwell. He is a non executive director. He should have no involvement in executive matters or day to day running of the company.

Good afternoon all from the Queens Park Cafe. A sweltering day in downtown Govanhill. 🥵

  17. I don’t believe you can determine in advance who the best manager for Celtic will be based on what they did at a club not very similar to Celtic.

Yes, Maresca’s record at Parma was unimpressive but, as we have seen with even super managers with a record of success at a lot of clubs, some can prove to be beyond them. Stein & Clough at Leeds, Mourinho & Van Gaal at Man U, Ancelotti at Everton.

Some managers need the right mix of club and them to make a go of it. Harry Redknapp always needed a chairman willing to spend big and he concentrated on making them a success while he was there but rarely left a club in a good state when he departed. Other managers developed a name as someone who made small clubs hard to beat- defensive coaches- Bruce, Dyche,Pulis etc; Others got a reputation as short term rabble rousers who could get a relegation threatened team out of trouble- Pleat, Allardyce, Warnock.

The point is that some fit a club and don’t fit others no matter how good their past record was. We are dealing with an art or a craft rather than a science.

Some of the managers we slaughtered turned out to be good reliable managers- Strachan, Deila, Postecoglou. Some that we overpraised never did anything after they left us- Jansen is the best example yet.

So what do we want as best fit with us. Do we want a builder, a breaker, a continuity maker?

Well, we may lose a few stars in this summer window. There will be interest in Kyogo, Jota, Hatate, CCV, Abada, O’Riley and Maeda. They won’t all go but it is unlikely too that they will all stay. My view is that, if we are not to lose more than two of our small nippy stars, then there is no room for a “breaker” as manager. I find it a dubious form of business speak anyway; If change is a constant you should be building and breaking in harmony not one or the other. So, that would be a no for me to Moyes ( I know he’s not coming) or MON.

Our fanbase has appreciated the style of football Ange brought; some think it was tailing off in effectiveness – other put it down to post title win slackness. Either way, we are not in a good place to become a Strachan type team again though we would welcome some defensive tightening in Europe.

I think our squad would like some continuity of Angeball. Brendan might deliver this but the clearer exponents on our list are Knutsen,McKenna, Iraola and perhaps, Maresca (I never saw his Parma side play but I know City reserves play like their first team.

Whoever we get, I will not proclaim them either a success or a dud, until I have seen how they do with us. That lesson should have been learned when Spurs stole our latest dud.

There’s a lot of noise right enough, but the loudest noise I’m hearing right now is that a deal with Brendan Rodgers has been agreed ‘in principle’.

    according to the Celtic site:

Nomination Committee: Desmond. Allison – doesn’t say who is Chair

    Remuneration Committee; Allison (chair), Wilson

Doesn’t list the Chairman as being on these committees

They would have to sanction a senior position such as the execs and the manager, plus his contract.

  22. I remember a few years ago our Chairman had to step in as Exec Chairman while we looked for a new CEO.

When the new CEO was reported to be in the foyer, the Chairman scuttled out his office to the lifts. As a person stepped out he said

‘ah, David, great to meet you at last

Noel from IT said ‘ehm, Werner, it’s Noel from IT’

Noel stormed into his seat for 2 reasons; he had worked for this guy for 15 years plus he had just aged him 10 years.

Best bit was that the Chairman had no idea what the new CEO looked like and had clearly not been involved the selection process; seniors in the shareholder fund had decided over his head.

Note: we are not a plc so they can do that

Choosing the CEO is the responsibility of the full board

  26. So why would the next important position at the club not also be?

Peter Lawwell has been involved with appointing Celtic managers on 8 different occasions

He’s worked closely with them all, he understands the daily pressures Ike nobody else

He’s the best person to be part of the process. Not necessarily make the final choice but it would be foolish to not to utilize the asset that is his knowledge and experience
