Away from pubic scrutiny

272

Appointing a manager is always a stressful time. Being left to get on with business away from scrutiny is rare, so it is ideal when all scrutiny falls on one particular candidate, leaving you free to meet and discuss plans with others.

You can be absolutely sure Celtic are speaking to more than one candidate, no decisions have been made and the ball is still in play. Meetings that are in the public domain are nothing more than that, many more have not made it into the newspapers.

  1. Desmond is the butt of many jokes here and is usually portrayed as a Golf Groupie who invested in Celtic just at add to his fortune and doesn’t really give a toss about the Club.

I have no time for off shore Billionaires, but Desmond has always maintained he is a Celtic Fan & that his Investment in Celtic was and will be the only emotional Investment he has ever made.

Desmond invested 4 Million when the Club were on their knees in 1994 , 29 years later and he is still heavily involved and the Major Shareholder.

Some say he is here for the money, ffs this is a guy who bought an Airport for 25 Million & sold it a few years later for 750 Million, any Dividends etc out of Celtic are inconsequential to guys like him.

Obviously he does believe that Scottish Football needs a strong The Rangers, this puts

him totally at odds with the rank file Support, and is probably the main reason he is not liked.

However I think we need to acknowledge even if it’s grudgingly that he is not the worst guy to be the effective guy in charge of the Club.

After rejoicing in the fact Ange bailed on us, I think rightly or wrongly they are petrified of the idea of Brendan Rodgers coming back.

Very disappointed that Jonny Hayes was overlooked.

A decision we could come to regret.

    Desmond and Lawwell must go.

His plane reg… registered in Isle of Man!!!!

Do we idolise fat cats with private planes registered in tax havens.

Disgusting really..Can we really mock Man City and Newcastle for being bankrolled by primitive beheading fundamentalists when we sell our soul to people like Desmond.

Jonny Hayes is a working class guy …bring him in now..

  7. Coneybhoy, His son Ross Desmond reputed o be a huge fan and is being groomed to take over.

One thing you can say about Brendan. During his previous stint, he was never a badge kisser or a chest puncher. After victories, he would let the players take the plaudits from the fans. All he did was briefly applaud the supporters, wave to them and quickly disappear up the tunnel.

Dermot Desmond bought £4M in Celtic shares, and has at intervals invested other money into Celtic, but the club was still a business opportunity even if it is was just an ‘emotional one ‘. We were hardly on our knees when Fergus McCann sold up, and Dermot moved in to underwrite the shares up for grabs.

There is also a distinction between major shareholder and majority shareholder, Dermot being a major shareholder at around 20%. No single person, or even group hold the majority of Celtic shares. Dermot is stratospheres above any of his challengers, his shareholding is not for sale and will be handed down to his family, just like the Kelly’s the Grants etc, etc.

  14. and yet DD weilds some sort of mystical hold over the rest of them, they all do his bidding.

  15. DD is on the board, the other major shareholders, or fan groups who have individual small holdings, are not.

That gives him influence and he is voted in by shareholders every AGM

  16. THIS GOAL , it is a thing of beauty. He was world class, I mean just look at it.

  17. Bournesouprecipie,

My understanding is Fergus invested 9.5 Million in 1994 & Dermot Desmond invested 4 Million, Prior to that Club was in danger of Bankruptcy, Fergus sold his Shareholding in 1999, Desmond is still there.

  18. CorkCelt

Dermot was one of the original £4m that along with Fergus 9.3m meant Celtic went closed of B.o.S foreclosure,

    Within that original 4 was

    John Keanes 1m-pause the B.oS

    Dermot 1m

    An other 1m°

    An other 1m°

    = 4m

    Fergus 9.3m

    Total 13.3

°I forget those 2,1 iirc was Dermots pal

That was to stabilise our club, capital available during that era.for year 1 and planning for future development,to put in the solid foundations we are built on.

With stadia development via Taylor report a must ways were discussed for the best fit model to cover the build of where us lucky ones sit and millions globally await a result.

DD was a big driver behind the PLC model which combined investment for stadia and also harnessing the millions of Celtic fans who were wanting to buy in and have a say via shareholding in the new participative and democratic ‘have your say’ that meant a world record buy in by fans. There as others say DD wedged in with 4m,other big pockets and the fans.

Heady time and you reep what is sown

What a foundation. What a stadia and what a club and what continuity since we left the hall

  20. RE DD : Don’t understand the animosity for a man who has never let Celtic down.

The ” haters” should be careful what they wish for.

  21. Had the fortune to witness DD up close in an away game in Europe…..Lyon away … long story how I was close to him ….but to say he was raging at the perceived injustice of that particular outcome would be an understatement!!!…. I think he may be a sore loser…which can only really be good for us !

  22. An Tearmann,

Desmond is on record as saying when Fergus arrived, he (Desmond) wanted to invest.

A mutual friend introduced them & Fergus said he needed 4 Million.

Desmond went over the books & plans and reckoned they needed 8 Million.

So Desmond invested the 4 Million & underwrote a further 4 Million, giving the Club access to 8 Million.

  23. Despite the arse-licking of DD and others of his ilk, football clubs are merely egotistical playthings amidst the baubles of big business for these guys.

Adopt a membership approach and vote them in and out periodically, giving some power to the fans that really matter.

All this talk that the club has agreed to back Rodgers in the transfer market makes me nervous.

Lets hope its BR instead who backs the club’s scouting and recruitment division. Limit his input to describing the skillsets needed for his tactical set-up and let Mark Lawwell and co from the recruitment division do the rest.

All lot of dross here during his last spell. Leicester fans saying he left them with a lot of dross too.

Recruitment is clearly not his strong point of management. Liverpool had similar doubts too.

  26. Bhoy from the Boyne,

I have reservations too but the other side of the coin is that BR wants some assurances that the nonsense inflicted upon him by Lawell last time is equally not repeated.

Wanted John McGinn, got Molumbu instead.

Wanted Castagne, got Tojan & Gamboa

    Wanted Schar, got Hendry, etc.

All 3 of those he wanted became EPL players and would have sold on too.

I do hope there’s a balance on giving the scouting dept the control over targets – young, coachable (by one of the best) and sold for a hefty profit.

  27. Big Wavy, There is no arse licking by anyone, I have no time for Super Rich Tax Exiles,

However facts are facts , Celtic needed the likes of McCann, Desmond , Keane & others.

The other Club went into liquidation, our Club didn’t, we are here today having the time of our lives supporting Celtic & winning Trebles for fun, these guys played a huge part in enabling us to do this.

We don’t have to love them or kowtow to them but I see nothing wrong in acknowledging the part they played.

  28. Vinnie

I totally agree re the ‘bad loser’ tag.

I have spent a fair bit of time in close proximity. Golf and at CL away games.

In particular I remember him and his gang flew in on private jet for the first game at Donetsk only to see us lose 3-0. That really was not a good night.
