Bucking underperforming recruitment trend

629

Every year we hear that January is a difficult time to do transfer business. Clubs are reluctant to allow top performers to leave midseason, but we’ve had some creative January activity over the years. Objectives for this month are clear.

We need to better prepare for our Summer Cup Finals. Trying to build a defence, or strike force, while simultaneously qualify for the Champions League is, unsurprisingly, tricky. Summer transfer windows are really two periods, the last days of the month, after European qualification has been taken care of, and earlier in the window, when limited volumes of business will take place.

We’ve done some great business early in summer months, most notably Virgil van Dijk, but instances like this are rare.

The most interesting aspect of this window will be how Ronny Deila is backed. He’s 18 months in the job now, long enough to come to an assessment of the wider scouting infrastructure he inherited. We’ve been underperforming on recruitment since January 2012. Ronny needs to buck this trend, and Celtic need to give him the necessary lateral.

Big Ciftci was level when he pass was played forward. He was onside therefore his goal should have stood.

See the BBC Scotland “highlights” – they should the original angle, then quickly a replay of the goal from behind the play. Nothing from the sidelines view or in front of the play – which obviously would have been more helpful in deciding if the lineman called it correctly or not.

If that had been an opposing team having a goal disallowed against Celtic – half of the five minutes of “highlights” would have been used scrutinising the incident – it would have been replayed over again from about five different angles, slow motion and all.

That’s margins – a legitimate goal, great finish disallowed wrongly. If the goal stands – confidence boost for the striker and a first half lead for the team – chances are we would have gone on to win it comfortably.

There is a comment from Blantyretim ‘s dad on the video celts site about how it is bad management expecting a second choice goalie just to step in. It was in the article goalie comes in from the cold.

16 Roads. Cifti goal ruled off-side when it wasnt 2 penalties denied a truer reflection of the game could have been 4-0 to Celtic. However playing 12 men with ten is very difficult. H.H.

Yesterday, on the fiftieth anniversary of it, a few of us reminisced about the 1966 New Year 5-1 victory over TFOD.

Myself, not for the first time posted to the effect that for many of us, Big Jock’s return was our Celtic JFK moment.

Perhaps with some justification, younger Celtic fans would shake their heads at us ‘ Ould Wans’ living in the past’.

The following account by Tom Campbell and Pat Woods of events two short months after Jock’s return, sum up how it felt to be a Tim as the Seven Lean Years came to a spectacular end.

Not only was I there, but I was dead in line with Charlie Gallagher’s corner as it came across.

*I was in line with Charlie when he smacked a shot off the bar.

Couple of rows in front of me were a bunch of Brucehill Tradamus Lampada lhads.

As the ball fell tae Charlie one of them shouted “hit it”.

His mate responded “aye and see if he does just watch it”.

The rest we know is history as Charlie’s shot spun up off the bar and a wee fly man, former Dumbarton loan player, positioned himself under it and if a Par player comes near him it’s a penalty.

As we know he just nodded it intae the net.

We all love tae talk about “Billy’s Bumper” as the Sunday Mail headline the next day called it, but the wee fly man fae Maryhill was as influential in our victory as was Caesar.

JFH – I really wish for us to win the treble this season mate.

Celtic being successful kills them it does.

Bailly was injured in an aerial challenge in the first half. He recovered after treatment, but was subbed at half time.

Bourne, to quote the Dean in Animal House ‘ it’s time to grab the bull by the balls and kick those punks off of campus ‘ . Dallas still has an unofficial influence on our refs and it shows. His influence is another contribution which has a bad effect on Scottish football along with his former bosses at Hampden.

  10. Joe Filippis Haircut on

16 Roads The biggest obstacle stopping us getting the treble in my opinion is not the other teams it is the cheating officials. I also think it is important that we back Ronny and dont start in-fighting United we stand divided we fall. H.H.

    2 dreaded events tomorrow

    1) Return to work

    2) step on the scales to see how much this fatbhoy weighs. Reckon will be heaviest ever and have a big event this year so need to look in shape, other than round

With that in mind going to bring back the Fatbhoys Slim competition for the next 20 weeks.

Anybody guilty of overeating and wanting to join Fatbhoys Slim 2016, please or email me. The only cost is the pounds dropping off your wobbly waist and fat erchies. Starts this weekend

Bit of banter and support of the next 20 weeks for those taking part with a wee night out at the end for those able/willing.

Was to far away at the game as I sit in JS lower to have been confident on calling one way or other but having seen the incidents on tv I was astonished the ref never gave them both, especially the Ciffti one as it was a 2 footed tackle and he took the player out and never got the ball.

  13. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

    JFH – I agree.

Hopefully we can kick on now and start to hammer those opposition teams, thus neutralising somewhat the corrupt mibs.

Also if we can progress to the next round of the cup – a home tie would be nice for a wee change – maybe that is a bridge too far.

I think one or two of us are beginning to understand why Celtic seemed so poor on Saturday the fact of the matter is we were subjected to such cheating that no other club in Scotland would be subjected to.Ronny got the blame but he could do nothing about the refereeing however, our club need to call these cheats out as at the moment they know they will get away with it.H.H.

I said to you on Saturday that they were both stonewallers and that I thought Ciftci was level for his goal. It was strange when Griff scored. There was a delayed celebration as we looked at the linesman then ref, expecting a flag and disallowed goal. Paranoid with justification.
