Central defence left open to criticism

333

Once Partick Thistle equalised, it was clear Celtic had plenty of spare gears to move through.  The game went to plan for the champions, even down to the manner in which the Thistle goal was lost.  Both central defenders left themselves open to criticism, highlighting the glaring deficiency in the team right now.  Whether the Belgian will play little or any part in the solution remains to be seen.

In five weeks, we face St Johnstone in the League Cup quarter final.  Cup games away from home are never the easiest, but by then we will have had a chance to flex our muscles in the title race, wetting the appetite for a challenge in the cups.

Artificial pitches are disliked by footballers for various reasons, so I have sympathy for the Newco manager, who yesterday called for them to be kept from top flight games, as they are in England and formerly were in Scotland.  They are cheap to maintain and provide an income for clubs, who hire them out, but the technology is still not up to the job.

How long before Motherwell, St Mirren, St Johnstone and others make the move?

What was it got Kenny Millar sacked by Livingston after two league games?  Results, tactical competency?  Or, judging by his mannerisms at Celtic Park two weeks ago, maybe a publicly overbearing attitude towards his players.

PMSL haha..I did laugh when I read your ‘Paul McKenna’ tweet quote……………..However in all seriousness I doubt he [Paul McKenna] will want to travel back to Scotland as I am reliably informed he has just returned down south after doing some work with the Aberdeen F.C board with regards their player valuations……

    Ovacik?

Wow,at last the answer to the perennial question. That the egg came before the chicken.

    In Turkey.

    Which isn’t a chicken.

Oh well, back to the drawing board…

  3. Perhaps “just how low are Brendan’s expectations now ?” Is a more relevant question.

And I’m not of the opinon that a player is better just because he has a foreign name, If two players, one foreign, one Scottish, were of similar quality and value, I’d rather see the Scottish guy signed )

McKenna might turn out to be a decent centre half, but not at the price Aberdeen would expect (which would be nowhere near what the media have suggested…..that was a number thrown out there by McInnes ). There’s only one Scottish player in Scotland worth an Eight figure transer fee, or anywhere near it.

  4. BMCUW,

Is that first sentence a sly precursor to a proposal that we can take this relationship to the next level.LOL.

Our recent signings have,in all honesty, been good. The boy from St Mirren,Arzani, both could light up the team.Similar to Wee Paddy.Edouarde sky is the limit.Izzy, great back up for KT.Then we come to the problem.CHs.Our scouts have come up with one,Commper. That is abysmal.I am not picking on the player.Sometimes you can have a run of luck that defies logic.I would have expected a list of alternatives.Seems to me Congerton cant find any.To me this is a major problem.

Anyway, had a major melt down the night of the AEK game.No BT sports,Celtic TV,like watching through fog.No CQN to get updates.Went mental.Turns out my internet cables were going on fire.Had to have 300 metres of new cable laid,a new Router. As I said earlier, some luck defies logic.HAIL HAIL.

  5. McKenna A free agent last summer…. Hendry a free agent last summer… Do we have scouts? or just watch someone win a header against LG and say he will do….. appalling.. So we won’t pay money for McGann abut end up sheeling out for a player no better than any of the ones we have…just to make it look like we are doing something

  6. so we have a St Mirren player….looking at Aberdeen player..who looks slow.and has zero experience. A loan from MC to help them get him fit basically.. No right back. Cover for KT but an old player… we should be buying hungry players who will push others..

Jeffrey Bruma…” It would be a dream come true to get injured for a big club like Celtic. I can only imagine how it must feel to pull a hamstring in front of 60,000 fans…”

    Recent signings good??

    Hendry, Musonda, comper

Izzy was a freebie, St Mirren guy hasnt started a game nor has the aussie.

    Recent signings have been bizarre!

  9. DILLIGAFBHOY,

Its down Fetihye way.Beautiful placeRegards the game, its only on Celtic TV.

Some bars can pick it up,but you would have to go around asking. If they can get it for you they will.

Tell your bank you are going to Turkey, and bring your card. The rate is astronomical, and the bank gives you the Bank Rate.No commission.Only bring enough Lira until you get to the bank.Hundreds of Cash machines and banks.Cheap boat trips to Rhodes from there.Beautiful resort, fantastic weather.Think Mehmet has a shop there selling the fake Hun tat.You could always bring an Orange one home as a souveneir.

    Or not.Enjoy.

  10. What blighted MONs era was his inability to source and sign a top class keeper.

Who would win in a fight between complacency and hysteria?

    —/-

Complacency would be (overly) confident that it had won. Hysteria would fear it hadn’t and never would.

Aberdeen today insisted they have received no bid from Celtic for star defender Scott McKenna .

And Record Sport understands that if one arrives it will be kicked straight back out.

A report this morning claimed the Scottish champions had tabled an offer for the Scotland international centre-back but sources at Pittodrie are adamant none has been received.

Cable meltdown, the stories I could share from my years with Sky. Where’s that break, sod it rip the lot out.

He signed Lovren for Liverpool. Hardly a blind spot.

  15. NOTTHEBUS,

I know,I know, but at least both give us a bit of hope.I think Izzy is a good signing ,free or not.The other 3 you mention were also signed by Brendan.Musonda, who knew?.Hendry,he likes.Compper,??????????.

I still think the Wee Saint and Arzani could light us up.I hope.

Thanks for the advise re: money. Is the game v the new huns not on Sky?

Looking forward to Turkey as I’ve never been before, might be a tad hot for paleface me though. Dont think I’ll be treating one of my zombie mates to an orange tap though, not even a fake one as i couldn’t bring myself to touch one, shudder. HH.

  17. I see McKenna as a big rough and ready type. Good for the Lafferty types and would perhaps have been less out muscled by the AEK centre forward.

It’s feeling a bit tkmax here. I buy much of my stuff there but need to be careful I don’t just buy stuff that’s not quite right, just cos it’s a bit more affordable. For the cost of Hendry and McKenna, could we not have bought one, even better (non project) CH.

Feels as though the cifti ‘bad-moneyball’ template is being applied again.

  18. BMCUW,

He did indeed sign Lovren, and his performances were to say the leadt, erratic. Was not a favorite of the Kop.Different player now that Klopp signed VVD.Lovren now does what he does best, and leaves the football to VVD.

Watching Liverpool last night,VVD was majestic.Very impressed with the keeper.Has to be the best kicker, throw out, keeper around.

Only 153 million, the pair.Going to run Man City close this year,I think.

    I think only.
