Central defence left open to criticism

333

Once Partick Thistle equalised, it was clear Celtic had plenty of spare gears to move through.  The game went to plan for the champions, even down to the manner in which the Thistle goal was lost.  Both central defenders left themselves open to criticism, highlighting the glaring deficiency in the team right now.  Whether the Belgian will play little or any part in the solution remains to be seen.

In five weeks, we face St Johnstone in the League Cup quarter final.  Cup games away from home are never the easiest, but by then we will have had a chance to flex our muscles in the title race, wetting the appetite for a challenge in the cups.

Artificial pitches are disliked by footballers for various reasons, so I have sympathy for the Newco manager, who yesterday called for them to be kept from top flight games, as they are in England and formerly were in Scotland.  They are cheap to maintain and provide an income for clubs, who hire them out, but the technology is still not up to the job.

How long before Motherwell, St Mirren, St Johnstone and others make the move?

What was it got Kenny Millar sacked by Livingston after two league games?  Results, tactical competency?  Or, judging by his mannerisms at Celtic Park two weeks ago, maybe a publicly overbearing attitude towards his players.

  1. if you lot think you are good celtic fans, ,think back to the end of last season, and how much joy there was . i have never heard so much shite spoken against celtic in a supposedly celtic site. you should be ashamed of yourselves. No debating on here just vicious crap.

  2. Based on season so far hearts are the best team so who is willing to bet they win the league?

But keep talking about sevco havimg great defence after 2 games, ok they we are doomed

  3. Joe Filippis Haircut on

On Thursday night I would play Gamboa at right back with Lustg and Ajer at Centre back and Tierney at left back. That allows us to put Hendry on the bench we need to be much better in defence in order to keep the tie open for the return at Parkhead. H.H.

  4. HOT SMOKED would also have to look at players form, injuries, squad rotation, etc… Point is football is team sport and the above willing also effective other teqms over course of season, unless robots have been purchased

I almost agree with you .

I don`t think there is NO debating and I don`t think the stuff I disagree with is necessarily `crap`. I think it is sometimes arrogant ` I know better than the professionals.` and sometimes kind of petulant ` my team must win all the time or I will berate them`.

I realise that in both cases, though, being a Celtic supporter can be a very passionate affair and we don`t always express ourselves as calmly as we would like.I think we all want the same thing: Celtic to be as good as we possibly can be.

  6. THE HANDS CANT HIT,

FFS what funds have not been released to BR.He said himself in January,he got everything he wanted from the Board. You keep battering out the old mantra, but never back it up.If you were PL,and Brendan came to you for yet another miffielder, would you not say,OK,Brendan, but is CH not the position we should be spending on.You seem to have enough midfielders andwingers here for two teams.I am a fan also, and can see what we need.

He also gave him 9 million for Edouarde.

WHERE ARE THE CHs WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SCOUTING.

  7. Stephbhoy

Don`t get me wrong. I am definitely NOT saying THEIR defence is better than ours; just pointing out that the nature of our goals conceded might have been the reason others felt Sevco were better defensively than we are. I think we would also need to consider the way teams play. Our mainly attacking style makes our defense look more vulnerable, I believe.

  8. We are now nearly one week away from Athens.Anyone hear anything about us signing s CH apart from Mc Kenna?.We were told that we have a worldwide network for players.Maybe Congerton was only given enough petrol money to reach Aberdeen Infirmary.

    I rest my fekin case.

The accounts back it up. Brendan spent £7m in his first year (£5.2m net), Paul’s article the other day claimed almost £14m (a claim that clearly was not backed up with fact). The new accounts will be out soon enough and will reveal his net spend once again.

As for Edouard, I alluded to above but i highly doubt we paid anywhere near £9m upfront (maybe with add-ons etc).

As for CHs, hasn’t Brendan tried to sign Schär who moved to Newcastle and the RB who moved to Valencia? The issue presently does not seem to be identification, as to opposed to getting signings over the line (that is of course they cost £1m or under in which case we can do it easily).

  10. The huns defence?Wait till Dembele,Forrest,KT,get a run at them, then come back and let me know what you think.Pity Edouarde might not make it,but I am sure Griff will give them laldy.Their main man is Tavernier, great going forward, great crosser of the ball, but hopeless defender..Celtic Park will be a cauldron for them.

  11. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

My issue is not with who we bring in or not.

It’s the formation we play, which leaves us open.

  12. For my tuppenceworth , if no one s going to buy boyata , then he has to play , and play alongside joso . They are the best we have , and are also used to playing against that mob . Being in this predicament at the start of the season is criminal , I don’t know but someone is to blame and whoever it is needs to get it fixed ASAP .

  13. THE HANDS CANT HIT,

No we never tried to sign Schar. If you know different ,let me know.

Anyway,50 grand a week from Newcastle wasbalways going to bollox us.

Again ,you come on here with facts you cannot back up.

OK,one last chance, apart from Mc Kenna, maybe pash, what other CH have we been linked to.

  14. THE Bhoys head to Lithuania this Thursday (August 23), to face FK Suduva in the all-important first leg of the UEFA Europa League play-off, and you can catch all the action LIVE on Celtic TV (excluding UK, Ireland & Lithuania).

Brendan Rodgers’ side have their sights set firmly on reaching the next round of the competition as their European adventure continues, and Celtic TV will be with them every step of the way.

Last time the two sides came head to head back in 2002, Martin O’Neill’s side thrashed the Lithuanians 10-1 on aggregate. That victory was the start of a European journey which culminated with the UEFA Cup final in Seville when the Celtic fans turned the city green and white.

    THE HANDS CANT HIT,

No we never tried to sign Schar. If you know different ,let me know.

And I think that’s the problem between the CEO and the manager. Him and his Head of Recruitment give the CEO their wish list and nothing happens.

I don’t know if Shar was wanted by the manger, irrelevant now, and given he’s not playing in the north east of Scotland, the east end of Manchester or is a former player who our HoR has signed before, then it highly possible he wasn’t.

Do you know for definite that we didn’t want him? Let us know ;-)

  17. That was some close season not only did the Sevco defence become better than Celtic, they outspent

us, ( mystery benefactor? ) and the apprentice boy is about to hammer his teacher.

Oh how wonderous the beauty of the league starting from zero as the white line is crossed.

Celtic TV only so far. Hoping for late announcement from BT or Premier

  19. I’d imagine coming out and staying a player had no role to play at your club is a pretty good way of driving down his transfer value.

Boyata will be sold and replacements brought in. Next two weeks are crucial to our season.

  20. One thing I’ll say, having watched two whole Sevco games this season – their defending at set pieces is even worse than ours. Every decent cross creates a chance. Shame we haven’t got an aerial threat. Other than that, they’re stodgy but lack creativity.

As always, I worry more about us. I’d like Brendan to play his first choice 11 from the start in every game now to get some continuity. If he does that and they all stay fit we’ll be fine.

  21. Gary67 thanks hope so.

I was going to invite some mates in, but will hang fire.

    Cheers

    D. :)

  22. Dembele is an an ariel threat.

so is Jack Hendry, he gets his nut on a corner every game, one will go in sometime.

  23. Re. Fabian Schar, in the local media here he was linked to Arsenal before he signed for Newcastle, I might have missed it but didn’t see him linked to us, that doesn’t mean we weren’t interested but the idea that BR wanted him and he wasn’t delivered is a bit of a stretch for me, he was always going to England if possible.

  24. i'vehadtochangemymind on

BD – thanks for focussing the mind on Thursday. Big game for us – morale and the club’s story about being a good option for certain players and let’s be honest, many of us would be very happy at a good EL run

  25. Saint stivs

Thing is with Erik, he was deemed not good enough, and sold.

Seems Celtic get panned on the internet for selling centre backs, as well as buying them

  26. Yannick Bolasie ( no, not me either ) joined Everton for a reported fee of £25 million is now in signing talks with……………………………………………….’Boro

  27. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ TURKEYBHOY on 20TH AUGUST 2018 5:10 PM

It’s difficult to provide any evidence of who we have or have not tried to sign. We do not know the conversations that are happening within the club or between the club and others.

However, the facts we have available to us are: the accounts and players that have officially been signed/ sold by the club.

Whether BR has identified new signings is (to some extent) irrelevant. All we know is that we are not getting players in.

  28. everyman and his dog know ‘s where our deficiencies in the team are , and with all the contacts we have worldwide we can only come up with a crocked defender from the dandy dons, heaven help us.

  29. 50 shades of green on

See a few alluding to a mystery benefactor down Govan way.

Maybees they got a tax rebate, o wait a minute. ???
