Clear rule required on storms

770

Although I believe it was the rain which caused the cancellation of today’s game it was the storm which caused me most concern. Football should not be played when a storm strong enough to cause structural damage is expected. Any building can be affected by a storm. While there is a tiny chance that any football stadium will be damaged, the consequences of a roof part landing on a packed stand would be severe.

There should be a clear rule on this.

The Foundation Christmas Appeal bucket collection has been postponed for two weeks. This is a critical period for all of the agencies who were due to receive funds from this appeal, I know the Foundation are working with them in the interim period. Today’s attendance would probably have been low due to the conditions, so hopefully the delay will raise more money than we would have raised had today’s game gone ahead.

TD67. That is the same player the huns are after, but the MSM in my opinion invent stories it is best to wait until any deal is done and announced by Celtic. H.H.

  3. Read on here somewhere that Jose was not pleased with the tactics of the opposition yesterday. It appears they delayed play for all sorts of reasons. Well, Jose, perhaps they learned from the Master of delaying tactics. You will never be forgiven by most on this blog for the way your team behaved at Seville. Oh and by the way, did you not lose some weight that day running up and down the touch line telling players to lie down, pretend to be injured and at the same time disputing every decision made by the referee? One would have thought you were trying to intimidate him. Lastly, the sending off, was your player totally innocent in the matter? I could go on, but suffice to say , think is it just to condemn others for things you have been doing all your managerial life?

I read those comment with a smile on my face as I considered the hypocrisy of Jose. I am not sure, though, if maybe he was actually complimenting Bournemouthss Manager for his savvy ( as Jose saw it).

After typing that, I just listened to JM`s interview. He seemed quite reasonable.

  8. A decent discussion from the herald on fan ownership hopefully it picks up momentum and popularity.

ALISON JOHNSTONE and Tony Fitzpatrick make for unlikely bedfellows. In a strictly metaphorical sense of course. Johnstone is the Scottish Green Party MSP for Lothian and an ex-Edinburgh councillor. Fitzpatrick is the former captain and two-time manager of St Mirren. If at first glance there seems little common ground there then in the middle of this particular Venn diagram is the issue of fan ownership in football.

The pair met recently at a group discussion hosted by the Renfrewshire branch of the Scottish Greens where a shared passion for the matter revealed itself. St Mirren has been up for sale for more than six years now and another attempt to deliver the club into the hands of its supporters trust is underway. Fitzpatrick lent his vocal support to a previous effort by the 10,000 Hours group to buy the club and has not become disheartened by the failure to get that deal over the line.

Johnstone, meanwhile, is a leading figure in the Greens’ Fans First movement, a two-year campaign to give supporters the right to buy their clubs. An amendment to the Community Empowerment Bill that was passed by the Scottish Parliament in June, the matter has now moved into a period of consultation allowing supporters to have their say via the Scottish Government website until January 15. She found in Fitzpatrick a kindred spirit.

“It was an interesting and lively meeting with the St Mirren guys,” she said. “At the heart of it was the message that football is such a big part of most communities. The fact that more and more clubs are coming under threat is of concern which is why we put the fans’ right-to-buy proposal out there in the first place. I was very honoured to sit next to Tony Fitzpatrick, who is obviously a local legend. And he is firmly behind community buy-outs which was great to hear.”

It is to the case of Hearts, rather than St Mirren, though, that Johnstone turns as she states her case for football supporters being given a greater say in the running of their club – and ideally not always as a last resort.

“You look at the situation with Hearts,” she added. “Their fans were effectively watching Vladimir Romanov run that club into the ground and feeling quite powerless about it. We don’t always want it to be the case that fans only have a right to buy their club once it’s reached a critical situation. The Hearts fans would ideally have liked to have been able to step in earlier before it hit rock bottom. A lot of the cases we’ve been looking at it seem to be when clubs are struggling and that is something we should try to avoid.

“Quite often clubs are sold without fans even knowing about it, or without being given the time to assemble a credible bid. There may also be brilliant owners who may want to step away from football or retire and they would like to hand their clubs on to the fans if possible. And this would allow them to plan an exit strategy that suited them. It’s just to get away from this model of relying on white knights who sometimes turn out to be not as well-off as was previously thought.”

The proposals will likely be tweaked after the consultation period and the Greens have some ideas of their own. “We think there should be a right of appeal for owners which is important if you want to comply with the European Commission on Human Rights. We also think there should be a requirement for a fans’ right-to-buy having being democratically arrived at, along the lines of a one member, one vote mechanism. So these are the things the government can pin down in the consultation period. Maybe there would be a case for groups being eligible for government grants or loans. At the St Mirren meeting it was clear that fans groups from small towns need a bit of time to get the cash together needed to buy a club. But it would be a tragedy if a club folded for the sake of £10,000 for want of a loan from the government.”

Not everyone has welcomed the Greens’ proposals, with both the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Professional Football League voicing their opposition. “I suppose there is a little resistance to change there,” admitted Johnstone. “If Scottish football was going from strength to strength and all our clubs were doing fantastically well economically then you could perhaps see their point. But it seems to me – and many other figures involved in the game – that it really is time to have a look at what is going on. As I said to both bodies, this is a right to buy, not an obligation to buy. I don’t know why the SFA and the SPFL can’t welcome that. You only have to look at the German model and the success they’ve had, then look at Scotland, and see the difference. Let’s not be threatened by each other, let’s work together to make it happen.”

I used to view The Beatles, The Stones, Gerry & the Pacemakers and The Dave Clark Five like football teams!

The Beatles were Celtic and dismissed the short lived challenges of Gerry (DU) and TDCF (St J) but had a much more difficult time keeping the Stones from top spot! I cannot , though, connect the Stones with the Hun as I liked the Stones 0:-) That `You Better Move On ` was superb. ( The song, I mean, not the dig at Canamalar. That was just quite droll) 0:-)

“Storm Desmond” How powerfull and influential is our majority shareholder that he even gets a storm named after him. As he gets blamed for the majority of “Storms in a teacup” down paradise way, why not blame him for the weather. Seems only logical.

Anyway I doubt he will take it to the extreme in attempting to poach a new manager :- Claudio Raineri.

Before taking this quiz, it should be noted that all ?real men? answer ?C? to all of these questions. Know this, and you will have come far in understanding them and enriching your own life.

    1. Alien beings from a highly advanced society visit Earth. You are the first human being they encounter. As a token of intergalactic friendship, they present you with a small but incredibly sophisticated device that is capable of curing all disease, providing an infinite supply of clean energy, wiping out hunger and poverty, and permanently eliminating oppression and violence all over the entire Earth. You decide to:

    A. Present it to the Prime Minister.
B. Present it to the Secretary General of the United Nations.
C. Take it apart.

    2. As you grow older, what lost quality of your youthful life do you miss the most?

    A. Innocence
B. Idealism
C. Fireworks

    3. When is it okay to kiss another male?

    A. When you wish to display simple and pure affection without regard for narrow-minded social conventions.
B. When he is the Pope.
C. When he is your brother and you are Al Pacino and this is the only really sportsmanlike way to let him know that, for business reasons, you have to have him killed.

    4. What about hugging another male?

    A. If he’s your father and at least one of you has a fatal disease.
B. If you’re performing the Heimlich manoeuvre.
C. If you’re a professional Footy player and a team mate scores the goal to win the World Cup, you may hug him provided that: You also pound him fraternally with your fist hard enough to cause fractures.

    5. In your opinion, the ideal pet is:

    A. A cat.
B. A dog.
C. A dog that eats cats.

    6. You have been seeing a woman for several years. She’s attractive and intelligent, and you always enjoy being with her. One leisurely Sunday afternoon, the two of you are taking it easy ? you’re watching a rugby game, she?s reading the papers ? when she suddenly, out of the clear blue sky, tells you that she thinks she really loves you, but she can no longer bear the uncertainty of not knowing where your relationship is going. She says she’s not asking whether you want to get married; only whether you believe that you have some kind of future together. What do you say?

    A. That you sincerely believe the two of you do have a future, but you don’t want to rush it.
B. That although you also have strong feelings for her, you cannot honestly say that you’ll be ready anytime soon to make a lasting commitment, and you don’t want to hurt her by holding out false hope.
C. That you cannot believe the Wallabies lost to South Africa two weeks ago.

    7. Okay, so you have decided that you truly love a woman and you want to share with her all of the joys and sorrows that the world has to offer, come what may. How do you tell her?

    A. You take her to a nice restaurant and tell her after dinner.
B. You take her for a walk on a moonlit beach, and you say her name, and when she turns to you, with the sea breeze blowing her hair and the stars in her eyes, you tell her.
C. Tell her what?

    8. One weekday morning, your wife wakes up feeling ill and asks you to get your three children ready for school. Your first question to her is:

    A. “Do they need to eat or anything?”
B. “They’re in school already?”
C. “There are three of them?”

    9. When is it okay to throw away a set of veteran underwear?

    A. When it has turned the colour of a dead whale and developed new holes so large that you’re not sure which ones were originally intended for your legs.
B. When it is down to eight loosely connected underwear molecules and has to be handled with tweezers.
C. It is never okay to throw away veteran underwear. A real guy checks the garbage regularly in case somebody, and we are not naming names, but this might be his wife, is quietly trying to discard his underwear, which she is frankly jealous of, because the guy seems to have a more intimate relationship with it than with her.
