Clear rule required on storms

770

Although I believe it was the rain which caused the cancellation of today’s game it was the storm which caused me most concern. Football should not be played when a storm strong enough to cause structural damage is expected. Any building can be affected by a storm. While there is a tiny chance that any football stadium will be damaged, the consequences of a roof part landing on a packed stand would be severe.

There should be a clear rule on this.

The Foundation Christmas Appeal bucket collection has been postponed for two weeks. This is a critical period for all of the agencies who were due to receive funds from this appeal, I know the Foundation are working with them in the interim period. Today’s attendance would probably have been low due to the conditions, so hopefully the delay will raise more money than we would have raised had today’s game gone ahead.

  8. Alex Harvey, and his sensational rock band I think liked more of the live stuff, I don’t remember him doing many records, he was talented, and he did write a few songs, kinda seemed he was happy doing live gigs I think.

  9. Just read John Hartsons piece on Stokes. Isn’t it amazing how many ex pros think he should be getting a game these days. I Thought he played at his best when up front with Hooper. Not so good when played on the left but still did ok. I thought he was an average striker for Celtic and could and should have scored more goals for us. I remember someone putting him through on goal one time, right away I knew there was no chance of him outstripping their centre half even though the centre half was a cart horse. No, I thought, Stokesy will cut back inside and sure enough he did. I’ve not been in the pub as often as I used to but when I did Stokes was in my local every Sunday, on other occasions as well. If he took more care of his body instead of drinking lager and horsing down pizza every week then maybe Ronnie Deila might play him. A total unprofessional in my eyes. bTW I would say Chris Sutton is a soup taker of the highest order.

Brian’s son Kris sent me this eulogy he wanted his friends to see, please have a read through and feel free to share. Personally I’m sad but also so happy that I knew this great man. Enjoy.

    Brian’s Journey

Brian Comerford was a special man. He enjoyed doing things differently from the norm. You could say he was consistent with this right until the end because at just 55 he was far too young to leave this world. He wouldn’t want a normal eulogy either so I was thinking, since his good friend Joe Fan once gave him the title “Mr Celtic” let’s explore that in a way that he would have relished; by looking at his life accompanied by Celtic facts, figures and fixtures.

Brian was born on April 27th 1960 to Evelyn and Daniel. In a stroke of good fortune, April 27th that year was a Wednesday. He may have had to miss his own birth had he waited three more days because Celtic were playing St Mirren in the last league game of the season that day and he would have wanted to be there.

It was while growing up in Rutherglen, which is where Celtic great Bobby Murdoch was from too, that he met his two lifelong friends Michael Brodie and John Quinn. This St Mark’s Primary school trio were a force to be reckoned with, sharing important milestones, challenges and many good times. These three amigos literally travelled the world together watching Celtic play and would figuratively have given the world for one another too. Especially John, he might actually try to do this now on account of his incredibly generous personality. It is an amazing friendship and even though Brian is no longer alive within it, the memories and the bond he shared with Michael and John will last for ever.

He shared an even greater bond with the love of his life Pauline. Despite this, she was not immune to Celtic related relationship tests. I am sure it came as no surprise to her when she found out that the biggest day of her life, her marriage to Brian, would need to wait until the close-season in 1983. Weekends from August to May were far too precious to Brian to let something small like a wedding get in the way. A justifiable decision mind you because the league title wasn’t decided until the final day of that year. Dundee Utd won it that day unfortunately but over the course of their 37 year relationship, Brian managed to celebrate Celtic wining 16 league titles. Not a bad return at all! Pauline even came round in the end and had been at the football alongside him for the most recent of these triumphs. Together they enjoyed a fantastic family life full of mutual support and respect. They shared amazing social times, fantastic holidays and the raising of two beautiful children to adulthood.

His son Kris was not given a copy of the script however. He decided that the best time to be born would be at 7.51 am on the day of a Celtic game on August 1st 1987. It might have just been a preseason friendly against Arsenal to everyone else but to Pauline it was a fixture that meant she had to be alone and without visitors in the maternity ward until after the game had finished. You see Brian didn’t want to miss out on the joyous first meeting of his family and baby Kris any more than he wanted to miss the Celtic match. So he did both. I am sure that family meeting Kris was his prevailing memory of the day though seeing as Arsenal won 5-1.

No maths lessons were learned however following that close call. Brian still didn’t think to simply add roughly nine months to any possible conception date because daughter Kelsey was born in May 1995 – only the most important month of a season! She arrived without complications on May 30th that year, in terms of football fixtures anyway – off the field she was jaundiced and refused to wear her eye protection for the phototherapy. I am sure that had Kelsey been born 3 days earlier she would have entered the world without the presence of her father in the room. Brian would most certainly have been too busy celebrating a Pierre Van Hooidonk Scottish Cup winning goal at Hampden instead. A goal that allowed his favourite player Paul McStay to lift his first trophy as club captain, and Celtic’s first trophy in six years. It was also Kris’ first ever taste of Celtic winning silverware and Brian made sure he had a ticket that day.

Brian took great pride and joy from the fact that he was able to share in these football related successes with his family. It meant the world to him that his passion for Celtic was reciprocated by those he loved so dearly. Both Kris and Kelsey were inducted into the Celtic way from a very early age for example. Eight week old Kris accompanied his Dad to Dortmund’s stadium before a UEFA Cup 1st round match in September 1987. Likewise, eight week old Kelsey was with her Dad at matches against giants such as Emden Kickers and Wilhelmshaven during the 1995 pre-season tour of Germany.

Just before the trip to Dortmund in 1987 he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 27. He endured and prevailed through 12 gruelling months of aggressive chemotherapy treatment. The effects of this battle for survival were devastating and long term in duration. He was subjected to three hip replacement operations the first on which when he was just in his 30’s – which is incredible considering that he did indeed only have two legs like the rest of us. This was in addition to several other health concerns that he lived with until his passing last week.

It was a good then that Brian was such a proud, dedicated and hard-working man. Many people would have given up trying to achieve their goals in the face of such adversity. Brian wanted to live his life to the full and that’s what he did, starting with the basics. You can’t look after your family and pay for European away trips unless you have an income. Throughout all the bouts of ill health that he suffered, he only ever missed work when he was hospitalised, and even then through gritted teeth. He was often driven to work even though he felt terrible and completely fatigued, just like the day before he was hospitalised last month. This is testament to his sense of commitment, duty and resolute desire to not let people down. Most importantly his work gave him purpose. He truly enjoyed his vocation and there are countless young men and women around Glasgow who owe Brian a debt of gratitude, because if it was not for his understanding and approachable training style, they may not have been given a chance to succeed by anyone else. Brian saw the goodness and the potential in people.

His children always thought that Brian actually had three jobs. Training Manager by day, Painter & Decorator homer extraordinaire by night, and Treasurer of the Bobby Murdoch Rutherglen Vogue Celtic Supporters Club at the weekend; and in any hours in between. Brian became involved with the club when he was just 15. He was incredibly proud of his association with the club and its members. He would do anything he could to help people who needed a ticket and he worked tirelessly to ensure that the books were balanced. I’m sure some of you in here today dreaded it when ‘Cubby’ would do his rounds looking for membership ‘Dues’. Some of you might have even profited from a windfall on the ‘Totes’, a weekly fundraising game that Brian spent lots of time promoting and administering. He was touched by the gesture that the club made a couple of years ago when they gifted him a signed Lisbon Lions picture as recognition and thanks for his work over the years. His membership lasted until six months ago when he felt that since his health was deteriorating and since he had managed the club into such a secure position that the time had come to hand the reins over to the younger generation. It was a decision that did not come easy for him and he was deeply saddened when he finally resigned. His love affair with Celtic never waned, and not being physically fit enough to regularly get on the Vogue bus to away games anymore was painful for him.

Brian was so very proud of the younger generation in his family life too. It gave him joy to know that both Kris & Kelsey managed to prosper into beautiful, respectful adults. That’s all he ever wanted for them. That and to amass a large collection of Celtic programmes for Kris. You might think, ‘what a lovely sentimental heirloom for Brian to pass down from father to son’. You’d be wrong. His intention was one of pure fiscal gain and he strongly encouraged Kris to sell them immediately after the funeral. Apparently there is a bus load of people here that fit the target market.

He also shared 37 very happy years with his darling wife Pauline. They shared a unique and precious time together and it will come as no surprise to anyone here that just last week, Brian summed up his own journey by saying “I have had a great life”. That he did. He squeezed an amazing amount of goodness, happiness, selflessness, and Celtic matches into 55 years.

If we could sum up who Brian was I would say that he was direct, honest, caring, sometimes grumpy, humble, loyal & sincere. He touched many people in a special way and will leave a huge void in our lives. It was a pleasure to have shared his journey. For Brian his greatest legacy and wish would be for Pauline, Kris & Kelsey to seize life with both hands, have no regrets and to reach for the stars.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton will be hunting for new signings in January with the war chest chairman Dave King has promised but reportedly will be looking at Conference level teams or below.

Warburton has said he is more likely to unearth new talent at non-league clubs, saying: “There are diamonds at that level. I’d be prepared to bring in someone from non-league if we felt they were good enough.” (Scottish Sun)

A newlywed couple had only been married for two weeks. The husband, although very much in love, couldn’t wait to go out on the town and party with his buddies.

So, he said to his new wife, “Honey, I’ll be right back.”

“Where are you going, coochy cooh?” asked the wife.

“I’m going to the bar, pretty face. I’m going to have a beer.”

The wife said,”You want a beer, my love?” She opened the door to the refrigerator and showed him 25 different kinds of beer, brands from 12 different countries.

The husband didn’t know what to do, and the only thing that he could think of saying was, “Yes, ly pop…but at the bar…you know…they have frozen glasses…”

He didn’t get to finish the sentence, because the wife interrupted him by saying, “You want a frozen glass, puppy face?” She took a huge beer mug out of the freezer, so frozen that she was getting chills just holding it.

The husband, looking a bit pale, said, “Yes, tootsie roll, but at the bar they have those hors d’oeuvres that are really delicious… I won’t be long. I’ll be right back. I promise. OK?”

You want hors d’oeuvres, poochi pooh? “She opened the oven and took out 5 dishes of different hors d’oeuvres: chicken wings, pigs in blankets, mushroom caps, pork strips, etc.

“But my sweet honey… at the bar… you know… there’s swearing, dirty words and all that…”

“You want dirty words, cutie pie?

..”LISTEN UP, D*CKHEAD! DRINK YOUR F**KING BEER IN YOUR GOD D*MN FROZEN MUG AND EAT YOUR MOTHER F**KING SNACKS, BECAUSE YOU ARE MARRIED NOW, YOU SELFISH BASTARD. YOU AREN’T GOING ANYWHERE! GOT IT, A**HOLE?”

……..and, they lived happily ever after. Isn’t that a sweet story?
