Clear rule required on storms

770

Although I believe it was the rain which caused the cancellation of today’s game it was the storm which caused me most concern. Football should not be played when a storm strong enough to cause structural damage is expected. Any building can be affected by a storm. While there is a tiny chance that any football stadium will be damaged, the consequences of a roof part landing on a packed stand would be severe.

There should be a clear rule on this.

The Foundation Christmas Appeal bucket collection has been postponed for two weeks. This is a critical period for all of the agencies who were due to receive funds from this appeal, I know the Foundation are working with them in the interim period. Today’s attendance would probably have been low due to the conditions, so hopefully the delay will raise more money than we would have raised had today’s game gone ahead.

Tells me a great story. His da became very good friends with john Wayne when he was over in the old country filming the quiet man, as you know I’m sure. Anyway they are drinking partners and often in each others company. He tells me one day they got john to croke park for a big hurling game. The games in full flow and his da looks over and john is smiling and enraptured. So he nudges john and says ” would you pick up a stick yourself john?” In other words would you play the game. To which john turns to him looking incredulous and says ” WELL I WOULDNT GO OUT THERE WITHOUT ONE! “. I was in pieces when I heard that. Hail Hail

  7. Mahe, if you get the chance, read some of the stuff about when Richard Harris,Robert Mitchum and William Holden went on the drink together. The renowned serious drinker Richard Burton was put to bed after two days, while the novice Ollie Reed fell over after about a day and a half. By all accounts Holden was the real thing when it came down to twenty-four hour drinking.

  8. Mahe the Madman on

    Aburntoutcase,

I surely must. I was of the impression Ollie Reed was quite a drinker,,for him to be beaten must take some men. I see all these Yankees talking about six packs and getting ripped,,the toughest men I ever knew where those good boys in the bars at home done hard punishing physical labour work in the freezing cold and pouring rain all day everyday then hit the bar all night. Bulks you up good and proper. Gimme one of those good men any day in a scrap over some gym head who looks in the mirror every night at his abs. Hail Hail

  13. Greatest word ever, KARMA,……..Jose: GIRFUY

After a lively start to the season a chronic run of injuries and hard luck stories have dogged the south coast outfit in recent weeks and looked like derailing their first ever campaign in the top flight.

With Chelsea showing signs of rediscovering their form tonight’s defeat was a devastating blow to Jose Mourinho as he watched the current champions lose for the eighth time in the league this season.

The game looked set to end goal-less until Glenn Murray headed into the Chelsea net to give the visitors full points and take them to just two points behind Mourinho’s side.

Rather than discuss his own side’s failings the former Real Madrid boss felt that a refereeing decision was the reason for his side’s defeat.

“We dominated the game but one refereeing mistake cost us,” Mourinho claimed. “It was a clear handball, with the result at 0-0, but that’s part of the game. In the first half we were not aggressive enough. We had a couple of shots and chances, but in the second half we were much more aggressive.

“We tried in the period where we were stronger but this is the moment when they scored the goal and with five minutes to go with a team that was defending, some people call it intelligent, some people call it lack of play.

“You know, time-outs, stop of the play, asking for a medical department to go in to drink for a minute like in basketball but they did very well.”

In contrast Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe was delighted by the win saying: “We’ve believed we’re on the right path. You look at our recent games and we’ve done really well, performed well in several of them but haven’t got the wins we feel we’ve deserved,” he said.

“Today was a different kind of performance from us. We’ve had to show a different side to our game but I’m so pleased for the players for all their hard work this season.

“First half, it was quite even. We were well in it. Second half we’ve played under pressure and we’ve had to dig in, we’ve had to defend, put our bodies on the line. I thought we were magnificent defensively.

“Our keeper played a big part in that. There’s been a lot of question marks about our defending this season but we’ve answered a few questions today.”

  14. More Sunday gossip. Some like it some don’t, each to there own.

According to The Sun, Swansea City are interested in signing Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor – but have been put off by the £3m valuation on his head.

The Swans are going through a tough spell on the pitch right now, and Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to Leicester City has cranked up the pressure on manager Garry Monk.

It remains to be seen whether Monk makes it to the January transfer window, but whether it’s him or another manager in charge, Swansea need to bring in some new faces next month.

The Sun report that Swansea scouts have been up in Scotland searching for new transfer targets, and have been particularly impressed with Celtic youngster Callum McGregor.

The 22-year-old has come up through the ranks with the Bhoys, and has recently impressed under Ronny Deila, especially having scored against Ajax in the Europa League last month.

Now, Celtic may have to deal with interest in their latest homegrown star, but The Sun suggest that Celtic’s £3m asking price is putting Swansea off making a move for the Scot.

Having lost Virgil van Dijk to the Premier League on deadline day in September, Celtic will be keen to keep hold of their talent, and that alleged £3m asking price appears to be enough to put Swansea off making a move for McGregor – for now, at least.

  15. Hartsons thoughts, just like reading, Sutton’s

John Hartson has suggested in The Scottish Sun that Anthony Stokes should have been had more playing time at Celtic this season.

Stokes, who has been on the books of Celtic since 2010, has fallen down the pecking order at the Scottish Premiership giants.

The 27-year-old striker has also publicly hit out at Hoops manager Ronny Deila for not using him frequently this campaign.

The Republic of Ireland international was not pleased with manager Deila’s decision to leave him out of the Celtic squad for last weekend’s Scottish Premiership game against Inverness Caledonian Thistle away from home.

Stokes made his opinion about that decision known on social networking site Twitter and was subsequently suspended for two weeks for his outburst, as reported by BBC Sport.

While former Celtic striker Hartson believes that Stokes was wrong to publicly criticise Deila, he has asked why the former Hibernian star has been sparingly used so far this campaign.

“Make no mistake, he publicly humiliated Ronny Deila with that message he sent out,” the former Wales international has written in The Scottish Sun. “But here’s the thing I want to know. Why on earth is Deila not picking him?

“That’s the thing which has been lost in all of the debate surrounding the incident since it happened. Everyone’s had their say on what Stokes did.

SEE ALSO: Report: Burnley set to sign 15-year-old midfielder from Scottish club

“But looking at the Celtic team right now I cannot for the life of me understand why he’s so far down the pecking order. You simply can’t tell me he’s not good enough to get into that team.”

Celtic are at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 39 points from 16 matches. The Bhoys are four points clear of second-place Aberdeen, who have played a game more.

  16. More Sunday A M gossip.

Following Jozo Simunovic’s summer move to Celtic from Dinamo Zagreb, Celtic are reportedly close to agreeing a deal with another young star in their ranks.

Davor Lovren, young brother of Liverpool central defender Dejan Lovren has caught Celtic’s eye when they were scouting current Hoops defender Jozo Simunovic.

According to Vecrenji, Celtic are looking to finalise the deal in January.

He also impressed scouts watching him in action during the Under-17 World Cup in Chile, where he helped his home nation qualify for the quarter-finals..

The 17-year-old creative midfielder has impressed Celtic scouts with his dazzling performances and they are reportedly looking to make it back to back transfer windows with a Croatian player signing from Dinamo Zagreb.

Ronny Deila is keen to continue his philosophy of signing young players, however experience will be needed in the squad in January to help counter the loss of Celtic captain Scott Brown.

Liverpool are also keen to sign another Lovren, with Jurgen Klopp looking to bring in his own players to aid the squad full of confidence at the moment.

  17. Got to agree with Big Bad John, though I cant believe we’re getting sun articles posted on the “not lazy journalism” blog. Then again you cant expect much more I suppose, it used to be Sunday herald, observer, times, telegraph we got articles from on a Sunday, now its the sun and mail, the collective IQ has plummeted.

  18. Australian & New Zealand Bhoys need to order by tomorrow if they want any of our great Celtic books, DVDs or Annuals from http://www.cqnbookstore.com

On books we have The Winds of Change – managing Celtic 1991-2005 which continues the story from Caesar & The Assassin. The format is the same, both brilliant books and both at the Bookstore.

Also recommended is Brendan Sweeney’s Classic Celtic The Early Years which covers the first few years of our club in great detail – and for the first time ever.

On the DVDs we have Celtic’s new one which is called Game Changer and also new in Celtic’s Smiler – the documentary about Neily Mochan with the book to follow shortly.

All orders on CQNBookstore are dispatched 9am next day ( excluding Sunday) so your order today will be sent in the morning.

Thanks to everyone who emailed me last night. All have had a reply and with this help we will now get this sorted. What a special place CQN is !

  19. Night shift a much nicer read this morning, Delighted to see Tri-coloured Ribbon back. Haven’t see Roy Croppie for a while. hope he hasn’t flounced or worse still has something wrong with him. If you are lurking Roy haste ye back. Same message to BMCUW, ACGR, Jobo, Gordon 64 and a few others whose names I can’t readily recall but who have either flounced or are on sabbaticals.

  20. Oops, forgot this one, is this not the guy the Huns where gonny sign?

According tot he latest reports from Scottish giants, Celtic want to sign Accrington Stanley striker Josh Windass

Windass has made it clear he wishes to leave the English League Two side and Hoops are ready to land him at Celtic Park as they want to strength their squad in January.

Ronny Deila was rumoured to be targeting the 21-year-old for a January swoop but is understood to be close to finalising a deal ahead of the transfer window next month.

Windass has been huge for his team this season scoring 10 goals in 19 league games and addition reliable goalscorer like him will be excellent for Ronny Deila’s team especially after a scandal with Anthony Stokes.
