Clyde flows west but tide of football history flows east to Parkhead

574

Dalglish, we are told, ran to his bedroom to rip posters off the wall, in case Sean Fallon would see them and reconsider, but Celtic have always been open to all. Kenny will tell you, he was assured Rangers were preparing to sign him, but this was Celtic. In 1967. He knew which way the tide of history was flowing.

Sean’s boss, The Boss, once spent his free Saturdays following Rangers. Stein didn’t just become a lapsed Rangers fan, according to his friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson. As Celtic manager, he made it his business to wholly and completely end the dominance they had over the then humble team from Parkhead. I’ll spare the detail of how that sentiment translated down to the vernacular.

Scott Allan made no secret of his boyhood allegiances. He would have gone to Ibrox in a flash, as would so many of our historic greats, but this decision came down to a simple truth. The basic salary on offer at Celtic is around three times what the jungle drums were offering across the city. This disparity means it’s not just about the money, it’s about that tide of history, which Kenny Dalglish knew so well.

Today is witness to one more veil being peeled off, exposing more of the consequences of what happened when Rangers decided not to make provisions for the inevitable challenge to their aggressive tax avoidance schemes. Their Discounted Options Scheme was found to be illegal, as were several of their Employee Benefit Trusts, with the remainder subject to appeal, but the club went to the wall because that inevitable challenge made it impossible for them to borrow other people’s money.

Liquidation followed and hundreds of creditors were left unpaid, but while a newco from such ashes could change their name to Rangers and wear the same jerseys, it was always going to look like an off-key tribute act. This was never going to be about three years in the lower leagues.

  1. Paul67 – Great article, yes newco will come up this season – and we should welcome the increased exposure it will give them – more of a spotlight on the sham of a club that’s been created from the ashes of the previous sham.

Welcome to Celtic Scott, and thanks to secret agent Stubbs for his continuing service.

“The bigger story is the reaction to the transfer in and around the Game in Scotland. Celtic is a welcoming family for all who embrace us, but the external environment sustains a poison that’s proven hard to eradicate.

Those with a mainstream platform might do well to reflect on how their influence might be better applied.”

  4. ItaliaBhoy @ 12:20,

Excellent post, if you’re going to show that much arrogance you really need to back it up – how did Warburton describe it?

    Looking after #1… Oh dear.

Still I believe we have helped the New Rangers out.

Imagine the embarrassment had they lost out to Rotherham:-)

    Hail Hail

“Mulgrew is not a central midfielder”. Spot on.

If Scott Allan is signed I hope every Celtic fan will untie behind him on his debut. He has been brave in making this decision. Not easy to have all your pals suddenly hate your guts.

All the best Scott. Hope you are a great success.

  7. No issues with signing Allan at all but this deal would have felt so much better if we had already signed the players we clearly needed for champions league qualification. He may prove to be much more but this feels more of a PR signing than a player who we expect to improve us.

Good luck to the lad, hopefully he goes on to prove himself a top Bhoy!

    HH!

  8. I’m concerned about our striking options, I really am. OK, we’ve signed “Chief Chee” who I didn’t rate , just hope I’m wrong. Other than that what have we got?. Think we should get a reasonably priced actual striker signed , like now man!

Also thing the transfer window should close before the season starts as I cannot see and positive results from the current way of doing.

Off to hit a wee white ball

£250k is a worthwhile punt on Scott Allan, as Phil’s blog points out its only equivalent to 33 weeks of Paul Murray’s wages :0)

  14. Has McGeoch gone back to Hibs? If so a smart move to take up the option of an extra year on his contract or he could have gone to Hibs for nothing. So well played Celtic. Henderson will get plenty game time now and will be a better player when he comes back to us next year.

Johansen has been very poor but Ronny seems to have s blind spot where he is concerned. Time for him to be dropped and Armstrong moved into that position.

Looking forward to the next few weeks of football.

  16. If/when Scott Allan signs, this is one press conference we will have to control, instead of the Laptop Loyal.Their questions will be filled with Sevco bollox, and laced with sinister traps for the boy to fall in to.He has made a huge decision, and i hope he gets total 100% support from the Celtic fans,he deserves it at least, for giving us a huge GIRFUY to the huns for starters…….:]

  17. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Scott Allen’s transfer is a watershed moment. Not because he is necessarily a great signing – but it broadcasts the impotence of Sevco and their media lackeys to even the thickest of huns.

    Loving it.

  18. glendalystonsils on

Wise Sevconians (if there are any) will have kept their season ticket receipts for the inevitable tidal wave of refund demands.

Let’s call it the ‘Scott Allan’ effect.

    TEEHEE

  19. Hahahahahahahaha

This signing is genuinely the stuff of nightmares for the hun hordes. How they must be squirming.

I have no views on the chap – seems quite good – lets see. Bournes I have never heard any Celtic supporter saying they will burn their SB etc if we signed a hun. Quite frankly none of us care about that stuff. Lets leave that to the hun.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAA. Brilliant.

  20. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Welcome to Celtic, Scott. You have joined a great club.

We have signed a good player who could become a really good player.

Couldn’t care less if he used to support a club that no longer exists.

  21. !!Bada Bing!! on 14th August 2015 12:54 pm

I wouldn’t even have a press conference. What’s the point?

    Just release a statement.
