Colts and 40 years of appalling development

468

For close to two decades Celtic youth teams have dominated Scottish development leagues. We invest more in youth football than anyone else, we flood the Scottish leagues with graduates from our academy, and we harvest the occasional gem for the first team.

The current squad has Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Eoghan O’Connell (who I think has a genuine chance) and Liam Henderson, who all made the step-up but for 40 years our record in maturing youth talent has been appalling.

Care to guess the last successful striker Celtic brought through the system?

Clubs who regularly finish behind Celtic in the youth league table produce far more first-team talent, some of whom Celtic pay money to sign later in their careers. What Dundee United, Hibs, Hamilton Accies and others can do, which Celtic have been reluctant to do, it blood young players in the first team early.

Celtic’s reasons for this are valid. They have championships to win every season, and even when that is a formality, dropping points to anyone is cause for a crisis. We do not have the most conducive environment for youthful endeavours.

In recent times we’ve tried to help players bridge the gap between youth football and the Celtic first team by sending them out on loan. Callum McGregor benefited from this but it’s hard to find evidence the strategy is delivering.

Celtic have wanted a ‘colts’ team for 50 years, a place where youthful talent can come up against the harsh environment of fully grown men. I know one chairman of a successful developer of youth players who believes that if they are not thoroughly exposed to ‘real’ football between the ages of 16 and 19 they will be lost to the game by 20.

Frustration at a perceived lack of progress kicks in, then unhelpful habits take over.

No one can say with any great conviction that a colts team will solve anything, but it might. For that reason, it’s worth trying.

  1. To be honest, I think I should be relieved.

There was me worrying about how I would manage to wriggle out of “family time” to watch Celtic matches this festive period, but this latest news would suggest I shouldn’t worry about it too much anyway…

Reagan recently stated that member clubs endorsed (words to that effect or similar) the applications for Europe licenses.

He has also previously stated that the application for a European license is the same as the ongoing requirement to compete in the domestic game.

If member clubs do have some involvement in ratification of those clubs applying for a European license then Celtic will have agreed to Rangers application. Moreover if the process was the same for domestic applications and no issue was raised, I would imagine that Celtic would now have no cause for complaint as they did not raise an issue at the time. The issue is how much Celtic knew and how much clarification was asked for if any.

Can anyone say with any degree of certainty that Reagan is correct in stating that member clubs vote or ratify other member clubs applications for European licenses, that that application process is the same as the application for the domestic competitions?

No yet, I’m curious to hear their response to the latest strategies offered to them, they can be highly imaginative in providing reasoning for prevarication and inaction. If they applied half as much energy devising ways to progress res12 it would have been done and dusted in 2014.

After which, shares will be getting sold and all support for the Plc will be withdrawn.

  7. Here it is for everyone:

    Auldheid on 19th December 2016 1:31 pm

    Good Afternoon.

Res12 could have and should have been passed in 2013 in my opinion.

It certainly should have been adopted in spirit and action in 2014 after SFA responded to enquiries made.

The evidence accumulated as result of the activity of the Res12 lawyer backs up a case for investigation on its own regardless of provenance issues but passing Res12 overcomes that issue.

TD is correct that accusations of fraud need to be made on solid ground. Res12 would have produced more solid ground to decide if indeed a case exists and it is possible it may not, but the time taken to get back to the beginning makes it hard not to believe that something is amiss.

Asking the questions is accountability in action, which is a goal of Res12, to remind the SFA, who are made up of clubs including Celtic, that they are the custodians of football but not it’s owners.

I see Paul and WC being asked questions and I think that unfair. Without their help and all of those who contributed to meet the cost of the Conclusions that were circulated to signatories and later published on CQN there would have been nothing to conclude and bring us back to the 2013 and 2014 position, but much better informed. So can they be left out of discussions please?

As it stands, although the meeting was disappointing in terms of deja vu, a number of suggestions were made by the gang of four (copyright TD67 and Res12 Ya Bass :) ) in terms of taking matters forward and information on a line of enquiry that came up during the meeting was provided after the meeting.

The ball is in Celtic’s net so I suggest giving them a little time to either kick it back into play and continue the game in an acceptabe manner or kick it out of play because it can be demonstrated the game is actually over but importantly recognise that there is no long grass left to kick it into.

  8. Well the Res 12 thing has panned out pretty much the way some of us predicted from the start.

But it was worth the effort, and wasn’t entirely in vain.

    It has achieved two things

    1. A senior UEFA official has confirmed in writing that so far as UEFA are concerned Sevco are a new club.

    2. It has exposed the Celtic Board for what they are.

  9. Canamalar

    TET,

Cheaper just reporting it to serious fraud and organised crime to investigate, there’s enough evidence to open investigation and they have the same powers as the CFCB to go to the sources for evidence and info. A guilty verdict would then call into question the boards integrity and regard for their responsibility to protect the shareholders interests, this was why we provided them the opportunity to resolve this through the football regulatory authorities. Making it a criminal matter is the last resort and fully in their own hands, deal with it or risk being exposed as incompetent or worse with regard to their responsibilities.

  14. I’ve been chatting to Auldheid over the weekend and again this morning via Twitter and have asked him if I can reproduce the conversation on here.

I have read Canamalar’s posts today re his take on where things have got to and can understand his frustrations.

I have also spoken to BRTH, who is currently at the hospital with his mum, and he gave me his view. I have asked him to post that in more detail later this afternoon, or send to me to post as an article.

I can tell you that he is saying that matters are ongoing and was not downbeat in any way about things, although he did recognise the frustration among the other chaps.

Related this wee tale to Staying Up Late, Get up early to watch The Celtic:

Just one wee story about the great Jimmy McGrory. An old friend of mine by the name of Jimmy Delaney, but not The Jimmy Delaney, used to frequent our pub and after a few Whyte & McKays he would burst into song…

”It’s still the same old Story

    A hat-trick for McGrory”

He was lucky enough to see the great man in action and he never tired of letting us know that Mr McGrory was the best of all time.

Maybe Mr McGrory was the last successful striker to come through the ranks. And remember the then Board tried to sell him to Arsenal, but the great man said “No Thanks”. (Note to MD, KT, SA, LG, JF, ES, JS,….ad your own here).

  21. It might be worth the Res 12 guys setting a conclusion date, if for no other reason than getting their lives back. Say around March/Easter time. If it hasn’t reached an end point one way or another by then and there’s no clear way ahead, draw a line in the club’s involvement with it and move on as seems most appropriate.

This’ll give the armchair followers plenty of opportunity to make their own decisions on how they interact with the club going forward.

He appreciated all of what was being covered but could not countenance giving up his ST and why should he? He doesn’t want to stop supporting Celtic and neither do I, but at least I know now what I am supporting and in what form that support will take, which is not financial.

I’ll go and watch in a pub and cheer on the players or moan at them when they misplace a pass but I’ll try to enjoy the football.

However should TRFC again become our main competition on anything like the previous basis where honest mistakes start to matter (and let’s hope that is a long time off) I’ll just accept we brought it on ourselves, shake my head and say it’s all part of the game so don’t get emotionally involved.

    WC,

My account is a conscience and true account and pretty underhand tactics were employed to try and force us on the defensive, they tried to browbeat and when that never worked made accusations of personal insults. It’s very unlikely such information would be shared by Auldheid or BRTH. The dismissive atmosphere and attitude towards us was highly relevant and telling. While BRTH AND Auldheid done their usual reasoned and a bit long arguments offering alternative strategies to progress res12 it was made clear the board would not be taking this to the CFCB under any circumstances, that is the long and short of it and anything Auldheid and BRTH have to say will most likely be dancing around this fundamental premise of res12. Dressing it up and distracting from it does not progress it in any way, sorry to be so blunt but I’m getting a bit fed up with people being told to wait for other versions as if mine is somehow a less valuable source of information, and dismissed as frustration.
