When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season. Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.
Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.
We have some concerning history against the Irish. Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998. The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland. In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright. Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.
Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

Aye. I think Wednesday will be a very tough match for Celtic. Nothing to do with pre-season results – I thought that when the draw was made.
A team full of Celtic supporters … this is an occasion none of them will ever forget, and they’ll all be out to impress.
Over the two games though I’m confident we will be too strong for Cliftonville. But the real stuff starts on Wednesday.
Here’s some travel advice from the Reds on travel and access to Solitude on Wednesday:
http://www.cliftonvillefc.net/news_directions_140713.html
http://www.cliftonvillefc.net/news_solitude_150713.html
As has already been mentioned several times, the areas best avoided by visiting Celtic fans generally tend to be helpfully marked out by the locals at this time of year. Just keep your eyes open and be sensible.
An Fear Dearg- is Solitude pitch artificial or real grass?

Ah,you may have forgotten-and thankfully forgiven-but the oul’ Catholic guilt is a strong emotion.
But my thanks for your magnanimity.
Blinkin’ flip,spelt that right,but got Boruc wrong….
The main person to be concerned about on St Swithins Day is GOOGYBHOY.
If it remains dry,he will likely be a disappointed BHOY for the next forty days.
As the prophesy excludes Manchester.
BMCUW,
Don’t see why not.
There is only one CQN’er too famous to mingle with the proletariat.
Artificial Turf mate.
problem is if we sell hooper it will take us as long as it took to find a similar scorer or we would have to bite the bullet buy big and pay large salary, the names linked in todays paper doyle a has been at best this guy from vics new club iv’e never heard of,and were letting our best striker after hooper go out on loan ,for a bit of youth-full exuberance ,remember we kicked out mulgrew for being 10 mins late for a bus and then went crawling to him to re-sign for us,if these people were in charge in the sixties our greatest player would have been shown the door, just as well we had the big man in charge rather than the lightweights of strachan and lennon
bags packed, boarding passes printed and best of all managed to get a ticket for the game…..Belfast here I come (AGAIN)….be in the rock for 2 o clock Tuesday if any of my irish friends fancy a beer and gab..

Introduce yer kids to the game very gently.
Smuggle them into 111 beside The Green Brigade, but put ear muffs on!
Tell them if they promise not to report you to their Mum for forcing them to stand outside various hostelries wi the oul’ lemonade and crisps, they can remove the ear muffs.
Otherwise,it’s the old Celtic End,wi nae singing!

the new singing section is in the celtic end I believe…
EVERY end/corner of CP should have a singing section – even the South Stand.
It used to, and it does on European nights.

An Fear Dearg- is Solitude pitch artificial or real grass?
————————————————————————-
Artificial. The original grass pitch was in poor condition and by November each season was generally very heavy and muddy, and then very uneven in the Spring when it dried out. Drainage had been a problem for years as was the mainly clay layer under the surface.
Several years ago partial grants were available from the IFA for artificial pitches (but not for grass ones) and the club took advantage of this to get new drainage installed along with a UEFA 3g 2 star standard pitch.
It suits our passing style of football much better and guarantees us the same playing surface in November and February as on an August afternoon. Locally it helps reduce the advantage weaker teams had against us on our old, bobbly pitch. Unfortunately that should in theory work against us when we now face a much more technically proficient team in Celtic.
Artificial turf, the ole 3G, suits the #9 Enigma as he has been blessed with 4G hair.
Sammi to continue his Euro away goalscorin’ spree on Wednesday.; he’ll get both goals in an entertainin’ 2-2 draw.

I had the pleasure of bumping into John Keane on Friday evening….he’s a pal of my Dad’s going back to the days when they were on the Committee of the Irish Club in Edinburgh (The Tara Club) in the mid 70’s.
I hadn’t seen him for a good while, and I knew he hadn’t been too well a few months back so it was great to see him looking so good and in fine form.
John is a total gentleman with a ferocious love of Celtic and it was good being able to shake his hand and thank him again for his help back in ’94 when along with wee Fergus, his financial commitment helped save the club. I told him that through web sites such as CQN, his efforts from that defining period in our history have a far better platform nowadays for awareness, especially for younger fans.
Very often the term “Celtic Legend” is overstated, but not in the case of John Keane.
(and to think I had the cheek to remind him of Donegal’s All Ireland victory over his beloved Mayo as well…..)

Have Miku and Lassad both left?
I thought one was signed on loan and one on a permanent deal.
I thought Lassad was a two year deal?
I’ve been wrong before…
***
Not this time – Miku was a year loan, and Lassad was a 2-year contract but was realeased a year early.

Anyone on here think Aberdeen will win the league this season?
The reason I ask is they beat Huntley 4-1 in a pre-season friendly. Given the ‘importance’ of these games the Dons must be worth a punt.
me i fancy HUNTLY for whatever league they are in.!!!!!!

According to the Beeb the ‘World’s oldest calendar’ has been discovered in a Scottish field.
Scientists are carbon dating it. Apparently they are trying to establish if Rangers were still alive when it was in use.

He may also have stayed a tad longer at another function than he was advised to.
To be honest,I just want this sorted in a way where all parties are happy and the club benefit.
Hopefully with Tony scoring a barrowload.

Some good points.
Sammi and Stokes are not out-&-out goalscorers (not you favorite sort)
We have Hooper or a new recruit for the First Berth
Agreed, we need to keep Watt as second choice
And the third rate strikers have been shown the door
