Dysfunctional Amsterdam

770

Three weeks ago there was little argument against the observation that Ajax had the worst European travelling support we have seen at Celtic Park – half a century of history.  Attacks on Celtic fans by a roaming gang on Tuesday night was not a surprise.  The banner, which Uefa are trying to ignore, but will surely be shamed into doing something about, was offensive and, in most jurisdictions, a criminal offense.

When the police collaborate it’s hard not to verge into the realms of branding a society “dysfunctional”.  Amsterdam is wealthy, affluent, liberal but intolerant, badly policed and violent.  The visit of Celtic fans passed with less incident (and arrest of visitors) than most visiting fans endured in recent seasons.

Visit Bruges instead.

They have been dying for retribution since old Deidco wreaked havoc across Europe

    – they will milk the moment.

A storm in a tea cup and no effect whatsoever on Celtic, – it’s a Scottish MSM agenda.

I’m not able to make one link per post.

I just tried to post a YouTube video called’2013-11-06 Celtic Visiting [HD] – politie veegt Dam schoon’. It is yet another recording from Dam square that made my blood boil.

I cannot post links on CQN. No idea why.

  5. Poiteen and derrydave,

I respect and bow to both of your first hand knowledge of living in Amsterdam. I have stayed there a few times while working in the Netherlands and I can appreciate both viewpoints.

Most nights out were trouble free but as per Celtic advised you most certainly had to be vigilant. As per any big city there were places best avoided. Again as per most big cities immigration has changed society and brought both positives and negatives to everyday life. The Ajax supporters while predominately non Jewish certainly seemed keen to be affiliated to Judaism.

I remember being innocently caught up in anti monarchist riots and the police (probably the military version) were totally indiscriminate in lashing out and using tear gas.

As is similar to Paris, IMO Amsterdam is not reflective of Dutch society.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

Earlier today there were a couple of posts suggesting that I ask to meet with Celtic before the AGM, to which I replied I had tried and it sounded like Celtic agreed it would be good to meet but I was starting to think it wasn’t going to happen. Well, a very capable man and I will meet with Peter Lawell and the company secretary, Michael Nicholson on Monday. The man behind the resolution Canamalar will be there via telephone.

I just seen a hansom Tim on the Reporting Scotland news clip there about all the carry-on in the ‘Dam’ – I’m not going to reveal yer name but I’m sure I met you @ the Q&A session in the KOSC in Blantyre in March – You done well son on the behalf of Celtic fans whose case / side you presented admirably. imo

    Well said Sir and HH

Well an interesting assessment, it certainly strange that a country so close, with so much in common to ourselves manifest a very different personality.

One thing I would tend to disagree with is the “liberal” tag.

Had that view myself until I dated a Dutch Girl.

Her view was that the seemingly relaxed attitude to drugs, redlights even petty crime was that these activities were compartmentalized to areas where the urbanite dross and scumbags – can go to hell in a handcart – ensuring conservative Dutch suburbanites can maintain their gentile middle-class society.

  9. Sean’s Trust (Mini St. John Doyle):

Good evening one and all. I have literally just sent your donation to the Mini St. John Doyle Fund via Internet Banking, which has officially been launched as ‘Sean’s Trust’.

Paul67 has intimated he will mention your efforts in an article once I have confirmed that the donation has been made. Probably best as you may scroll on by my posts…:)

Some of us are meeting on Saturday 16th November 2013 in the Beer Cafe, Merchant City, say 14:00 to toast George. All are welcome, if you are there, I will see you there.

I would like to thank each and everybody who trusted me with their cash, sent donations to my bank account and sent me cheques payable to me. Why do I thank you, because many many of you have never met me, I am just a faceless Blogger. Although some of you have had the unfortunate pleasure of putting a real name and face to the faceless Blogger.

You have made me very proud and touched that you put such trust in me. It was my absolute pleasure and privilege to serve you.

I would also like to thank you on behalf of George, Sean, Linda, Christopher, Debs and Sophie for your wonderful donation. I am sure they will thank you themselves. I have let them know they are more than welcome to join us on the 16th Nov. The last message I got from Linda is as follows:

Hi Lennybhoy I will tell the kids, where are you meeting. Yes the account is Sean’s Trust because we were given 2 cheques with that as the payment name so we just went with it. We got a cheque from Celtic Charity fund for £50. I still haven’t done thank you letters and cards, there are so many to do.I will keep in touch. Hope you are all well at CQN. Terrible scenes from Amsterdam last night, and I hear the match wasn’t good either. Tell everyone thanks. We are in the meetings stage of some events so I will let you know as soon as we have something concrete Best Wishes Linda and co x

I always sign my posts with the immortal words ‘Keep the Faith!’ I had faith in CQN, that faith was not misplaced, thank you all so so much…this is rubbish, you cannot put in words how you have made me feel. Suffice to say I am glad to be part of the CQN and Celtic Family.

So you will read the full post I have saved the amount to last. CQN donated to Sean’s Trust:

£1,534.30 (One Thousand, Five Hundred and Thirty-four Pounds and 30 Pence)

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  10. Corkcelt,

Condolences on your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time

  11. The absolute ‘tidal-wave’ of misinformation from the media re: the ‘Dam’ surely constitutes the same reaction from the Celtic ‘hierarchy’ as was meted out to – Hugh Keevins for what

was in comparison – a parking ticket offence ? imo

If not – why not ?
