Europe a sideshow to league duty at Fir Park

1000

A Europa League tie against Rennes on Thursday would normally set midweek pulses racing but when Celtic have such a crucial game ahead in the fight for second place Neil Lennon has a major decision to make, does he rest players for the Motherwell game?

Sunday’s game at Fir Park is set to become one of the most important games of the season for Celtic and I’m sure Neil would prefer a clear midweek to prepare for it, but resting players, with the inherent increased chance of defeat, could further damage fragile morale.

Celtic need a confidence boosting win but they need heads focussed on beating Motherwell even more. The consequences of defeat on Thursday are unpleasant, but the consequences of defeat on Sunday are incalculable.

  1. Brinalackbhoy, indeed.

Tictalker, I hope that thunder arrives.

    bournesouprecipe, aye, we are.

Celtic Mac, I hear you, but many other European teams seem to prioritise like this. Blantyretim is clearly saintly material.

Sadly we just ain’t good enough or strong enough to fight a war on 2 fronts. Past teams would have used league games as preparation for Europe, that’s no longer the case.

A result on Thursday, of any positive type, is a bonus.

We must win on Sunday It’s that simple.

  3. Motherwell, Sunday, Kick them harder than they kick us and before they kick us. No soft touches, no 50/50 balls, ours, win ugly, win beautifully, but just win

Mind you who in this team is capable of kicking?

    one Neil Lennon!

  5. Rennes is still a hugely important game for us, while I very much doubt that the current squad are capable of qualifying, a win would boost confidence for the difficult game with Motherwell. We know that Rennes will seek to hit us on the break, while Motherwell will simply roll up the sleeves and get stuck in to everything & anything that moves. We should be prepared for both, but one game at a time…..We will at least be able to play football against Rennes but will need to be extra vigilant (Tremendously hard I know) but this is a tie that is winnable.

Unless Rangers get a big points deduction the league is already gone, however any rally is merely delaying the inevitable…no way will go 26 games unbeaten…Lennon is on extremely thin ice and it’s just a matter of when he goes…not that I would wait for him to decide. The board SHOULD have someone lined up already, give the guy a chance to assess things before January window.

All other focus should simply be on beating Rennes…..for this the players & fans are most important not the manager, he is yesterday’s news for me.

Wanyama & Mulgrew are capable of putting the boot in – that’s about it. Also, we can’t put the boot in – can you imagine the outcry from the “establishment” if we got away with anything close to what the Huns do each week?

  10. A wee heads-up on a current scam-

Can you circulate this around staff and anyone else you feel is appropriate – family, friends, colleagues etc., especially as Christmas is fast approaching – the scam has been confirmed by Royal Mail and the Trading Standards Office are asking us to make people aware of the following scam:

A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact the m on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate number).

DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize .

If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call.

    I didn’t realise I was one of MWD’s groupies!

I think your earlier comment to him was offensive and, I repeat, was deserving of an apology forthcoming. You may be able to metaphorically fight your corner but your prose can be provocative and imtimidatory. It would be human and demonstrate insight (empathy) if you acknowledged this by apologising to MWD for referring to this sensitve topic in such an insensitive and hunnish manner.

Seems that we can’t refer to our own problems without getting a chapter and verse reply relating to the problem of the Hun

Thank God only decent thing you will have said/done ever.

  15. Even ignoring an insolvency event, we are 12 points behind the huns, with a game in hand and 3 old firm games to come. Even avoiding Administration this side of Christmas, you have to assume the huns will sell someone big in January (McGregor, Davis, Jelavic or Lafferty). If (big if) we can win our game in hand and the old firm game in December, and dont fall much further behind, the huns are almost certain to drop points after January (either through Admin or because they will have lost some big players). With the bookies offering us at 5/2 and Motherwell at 200/1, there could be some smart money being placed just now.

    Forever Scotland’s Shame

  17. It is a sad state of affairs when we are talking about sending out a reserve team in a European game, just to ensure we don’t get horsed by Motherwell.

I mean come on, just where is the hunger for success?

We should be wiping the floor with Motherwell, but will we? For goodness sake, if our players aren’t there to win, just what are they there for? So, they have to play 2 games in a week. Until this season, I have never heard this used so much as an excuse for poor results.

Our club is heading in totally the wrong direction. To me there seems to be 4 fundamental reasons.

    1. Peter Lawwell. Our Director of Football. He might not call himself that, but that is exactly how he is behaving. He has been responsible for us signing players of very poor calibre who are just not fit to wear the jersey. Let’s not beat about the bush. Mr Lawwell, not Neil Lennon seems to have the final say in all players signings of recent years. Fans don’t put their money through the turnstiles because the club has a good balance sheet. They come to watch good football. Mr Lawwell’s time a Celtic needs to be brought to an abrupt halt. He has walked away with far too much of OUR money (and it is a lot of money) with no improvement on the park. That is simply not good enough. I can’t help but get the feeling that Mr Lawwell cannot see beyond Rangers demise, and so long as we beat Motherwell, then that will do him. I wouldn’t be so complacement. We aren’t good enough to make any assumptions whatsoever.

    2. Far too many players under acheiving. These guys get paid fortunes compared to the rest of us. I don’t give a toss if they aren’t exactly happy. If you are earning £10K a week, or a whole lot more in some cases, you have no excuse for not giving 100% in every game. Young Jamie seems to be the only player who we can see busting a gut in every game. Other players take note. Some of the players aren’t good enough to pay for us anyway, and never were. They need clearing out, and a strategy to buy some decent replacements, needs to be established. We require so many players in so many positions, it’s ridiculous. Attack, midfiled, defense, goalkeeping. There isn’t one area of the park where we can currently say we’re happy with what we’ve got.

    3. The management team. We all owe Neil Lennon for sticking by the club when he was the subject of all sorts of threats last year. Many other people would have walked, but he didn’t. However, we have now moved on. Does he, and Messrs Thompson, and Mjalby still have the respect of the dressing room. I’m really beginning to have my doubts. I don’t know where the issue is, but injuries aside, I still don’t think these guys can tell you who is our best 11 players. We can all sit here a play manager and say who we believe is, but it’s not our jobs that are on the line if the selection is wrong. The sad truth is, we are barely into November, and even if Rangers get docked 10 points, we still can’t guarantee winning the league. Jock Stein, and the players from that era would never have allowed things to get like this.

    4. Dermot Desmond. Here is somebody worth an estimated £1.45 Billion, and whilst there was all the talk of Celtic joining the EPL, he seemed to have become part of the furniture at Parkhead. Now all that talk had died down, he seems to be virtually invisible. He should either invest in the club, or sell his shares to people who maybe actually have an interest in the club.

Rant over. I’m sure there may well be hundreds of different views on where our club needs to improve, but I hope we can all agree on one thing. Our club does need to improve, and by huge amounts.

    Hail Hail
