Euros, preseason and muscle atrophy

284

It’s all a bit cart before the horse announcing preseason fixtures without a manager or confirmed backroom team.  Plans need to be in place, though, for the Champions League qualifiers, which for Celtic, start on either 20 or 21 July against Rapid Vienna, Galatasaray or Midtjyland.

That date is a few days after the game against Preston and before the West Ham meeting.  The early graft will be done in three games on 7, 10 and 14 July at a training camp in Wales, with games against Charlton, Bristol City and TBC FC.  With a significant portion of the current squad involved in the Euros, preseason fitness should start higher than the normal baseline.

The Euros group stage ends on 23 June, a month before Champions League duty.  As we are forever saying, muscles maintain their strength for three weeks before measurable atrophy sets in, so we should be in good condition for that opening tie.  If we have a manager by then, of course!

  1. Let’s hope that the majority of fans withhold their season ticket money until the new manager is announced.

That’s what myself and a good few of my pals are doing.

Fed up being played by a board who cares nothing for our values and our support.

I wouldn’t be keen on Clarke at all. I do think he’s a good coach and did brilliantly with Killie but there are different expectations at Celtic.

We’ll be expected to have more of the ball than his teams are used to and we’ll be coming up against teams that sit back and make things hard for us. Does he have the skill set to build a side that can break down stuffy defences?

I can see us being well-organised and maybe even doing well in Europe but I can also see some dropped points at home against teams that sit in.

We watched the Villareal game last night. Great skill and calmness on the ball in tight situation across the whole game from the Villareal players (again – same every time I’ve watched them).

The other huge aspect was the commitment and effort all of the players put in – they boys showed what effort really looks like. Again – not just in the final – I’ve saw them three or four times this season – always the same.

That’s what we need – and were so sorely lacking all season.

Delighted they won – penalties were out of the very top drawer. Nerve, skill – fantastic.

The English team in the studio – especially Scholes and to a marginally lesser-extent Hargreaves – were terrible. Scholes in particular – arrogant at half time (Man U will get the first then go on to get three or four more) and disparaging and grudging about Villareal at the end (“…easier for the smaller team going into a game like this with no expectation of winning…”, “…just came to defend…”, etc. Miserable, arrogant twat – I was very pleased to hear him being so pi55ed off :-).

Also – the taking off of the medals as soon as they were put round their necks – overpaid, overindulged, petty arrogant ‘superstars’. Two I noted looked as if the valued their medals – Mata and Cavani (who was class all night).

I believe you were interested in the Captains Cask whisky from Eden Mill. Got mine yesterday, lovely rounded taste, worth the money in my opinion. lovely collectors item, so far minus a couple of drams.

  12. I don’t watch much other football but saw the first half and the penalties last night. I thought it was a really poor game with some sloppy passing. Villarreal defended well but we’re guilty of giving the ball away too easily in midfield. Pleased they won but felt sorry for De Gea.

I’ll be renewing once we have a decent manager in place, next week surely🤔

  13. VILLARREAL although their style of play last night was not pretty it was effective ,just shows what can be achieved with the right strategy
