Federate with England or lose your talented teens

815

Celtic players’ participation in the World Cup ended yesterday as Efe Ambrose’ Nigeria were eventually overpowered by France.  Baring injury, Efe will be in Champions League duty in Iceland two weeks from today, which leaves the player little scope to rest weary limbs for the season ahead.

The fitness management of Efe and Emilio Izaguirre throughout the season will need to take a different path from the rest of the squad.  The search for cover for both players should be a priority.

It’s a pity for Dundee United, and for Scottish football, that Ryan Gauld seems on the verge of leaving for Sporting Lisbon at only 18-years-old.  United have seen enough to know they have a genuine talent on their hands, but the player’s glory years all lie ahead of him.

United will continue to lose genuine teenage talent until they, along with other aspiring Scottish clubs, get a change of environment.  If the Scottish Premiership folded into the English Football League structure Ryan Gould would remain in Tayside for years to come.

Dundee Utd said a couple of months ago they were no longer under pressure from the bank and they didn’t have to sell anyone.

So this is their choice, and they must feel it is an acceptable offer.

Celtic are obviously aware of Gauld and im assuming they have watched him on more than a few occasions .

Seems to me they dont rate him much at all or surely they would risk the fee for another project ?

We dont want to see another great player slip through our grasp as happened with mccarthy.

Steven Mouyokolo has left the club. Celtic FC hav decided not to offer Craig Gordon a contract.

For Gordon see Mouyokolo, injury prone and a waste of a wage.

I think the issue with McCarthy at the time wasnt that we didnt rate him, it was that our manager at the time felt he needed to spend his budget on other areas of the team.

Such as a striker he paraded as one who doesnt score goals

The idea of us being incorporated or ‘folded into the English Football League structure’ sounds great in theory but what are the chances of this ever happening?

Sorry when i say dont rate him i meant dont rate him enough to believe he was worth the fee and going to become a very good player and more than treble his value.

    Who was the striker ?

  10. Celtic can’t buy every promising youth player in this country, we have to rely on our own young players coming through that’s the way the club is structured, we could go through an EBT rout, but you need a LNS and a Campbell Ogelvie on your side and that’s not gonny happen, any opportunity they get if we leave our selfs open we are done for,so we play the level game while others cheat, it’s what they do best, and what makes us better.

  11. Disagree that Ryan Gauld, or any other Scottish born youngsters, going to ply their trade abroad is bad for the game. Quite the reverse, the more that play abroad the better quality of player becomes available to the national team. Holland and Belgium should be our blueprint, breed young talented players then let them move at a young age to the bigger leagues in Europe.

I’d like to think that Celtic, with Ronny and his Scandanavian contacts, can begin to send our promising youngsters on loan to Scandanavian leagues to speed up their development and return ready for our first team.

  14. The time young McCarthy was going to Celtic his old man wanted to talk to Strachan to see how long he would have to wait for first team football or when would it happen, and he was told Strachan would not be the Celtic manager next year, and that was in January, so the kids old man blocked it,, fact!

Dundee Utd are under no pressure from the bank any more so it IS their decision to make, at the end of the day.

Paul67 says its a pity for Scottish football – what if they get 3 good players with the loot and challenge us for the title?!

  16. If we are going to take any player from D.Utd then it would have to be Armstrong.

Gauld is nowhere near Celtic level – Armstrong on the other hand has huge potential.

Whilst I’m here – good luck in the negotiations Neil. They started in January, all the best. It was time to move on.

  17. traditionalist88 on

Surely Lenny wouldn’t have gone if there was any possibility of England for Celtic/Scottish clubs?

Now that Lenny IS gone, don’t you think that all hope of the playing environment for Celtic/other Scots clubs changing, even in the medium term future, is now non-existent? And that the kite flying is counter productive in that our efforts may be best spent improving the game where we are, in conjunction with all other clubs who live by the rules?!

Of course, we don’t have to close the door forever on structural change, but nothing seems to be forthcoming…

I read an article from 2004 and the article by Paul was about how Nike and other sponsors will use their influence to bring about such change. 10 years on it still looks like we’re banging our head against a brick wall. The chance may come, of course, when the EPL inevitably goes boom…by which stage, we’d only be joining to bail them out!

Let them fold into our structure!

    ===============

We’ll never get all the best ones, the way Man United don’t, Juventus don’t, Bayern don’t… plus when you’re signing them at 15 some develop better than expected and some not so well.

We thought we had a coup when we got Michael McGlinchey when he was 15, parading him on the park during a first team fixture at half time! So yes… its only in later years we know for sure how good they will be.

Who knows…Gauld may not even make it and that may be part of Dundee Uniteds thinking.

But I think he’s worth the gamble.

  21. Clubs like Dundee United will always have to sell their better players no matter what federation or league they play in because they do not have enough punters coming through the door to pay them a top wage.
