Ferencvaros rest, regret lingers

313

While Celtic were taking care of business in Dundee, Ferencvaros had the weekend off to prepare for their Champions League qualifying game in Glasgow on Wednesday.  This means the Hungarian champions have played only two competitive games since the end of June, one in the league and last week’s qualifier against Djurgardens.

Rested players are better than tired players, but I would not be happy if Celtic were going into this match having played so few games.  Neil Lennon will have learned things from Saturday’s game that will inform his plans for Ferencvaros.

French clubs have been European champions as often as Scottish clubs.  PSG have two of the most talented and expensive strikers in the world, but they both failed to take the gilt-edged chances that fell their way in Lisbon last night, so France and Scotland stay tied on one win each.

90 minutes pass quickly in knockout football but the pain of regret lingers, just think back to Cluj or Copenhagen.  I would use post-match photos of Neymar to motivate the players ahead of Wednesday.  No one wants to feel like that loser.

  1. Nervous about Wednesday because i know nothing about Ferencvaros… Hopefully we have our strongest team out and get 3 or 4 early goals to take the pressure off

What about this Kent squirrel? Keeping him is now supposedly more important than keeping Moreloss.

Aye right. Moreloss gets sold to keep the lights on and Kent ‘stays’. The Orcs will then be told this is a great outcome.

  3. Good morning from a very wet and windy North Staffs – looking after the grandkids today – a day for indoor activities.

  4. Hi folks, I’ve spoke to JP today for an update on what’s going on and he’s told us the following.

They are hoping to get people in for the Motherwell game on Sunday, but they haven’t had it confirmed by the government yet if they do it will be around 700, so he will let us know later on in the week, it won’t be just corporate there will be a mixture, but it is a test event and they will be getting watched to see how they cope, so it will be done under strict orders.

They hope that if this test event is successful it will allow more in for the livingston game and will then take a game at a time, everything is dependent on things improving week to week so they won’t look to far ahead of themselves in committing to anything, as they could agree today but if there was an outbreak in Glasgow later on in the week it would get cancelled.

When we get back it will be the north, Lisbon lions and jock stein lower as the main stand will be off limits for players and staff as such only, so I would imagine tickets would be produced but again nothing 100%.

They have made no decision on how they are deciding on how they are choosing who is getting in but it is more than likely a ballot, and if your at the first game you won’t be in the ballot for the next and so on until everyone attends but that isn’t confirmed yet. To me that can only be the fairest way.

There will likely be ID checks so it will need to be the person who’s name is on the season ticket or who is registered to go who attends the game for track and trace purposes, I don’t know how it will work for clubs with tickets in the clubs name but I’ll let you know later on once it’s confirmed we’re getting back and whatever the system is.

There will likely be no turnstiles in operation when we get back there will be an outer cordon/fence around the stadium. Food outlets will be outside and you’ll be able to move freely within the cordon/fence, toilets are the only issue they’re not 100% sure in how they are going to use them.

Unfortunately he doesn’t think we’ll attend an away game this season, the government don’t want big movements of people into towns and city’s, it may change depending on things rapidly improving but it doesn’t look likely at the moment, if attendances are as low as 20/30% clubs will want to see there own fans alright before away fans so that would be another factor.

Nothing is 100% set in stone and all of this could change In The blink of an eye but I don’t think this will be far away from what’s happening when the government give the green light, I’ll keep you updated when I have more information but the media will likely announce that we’ve been given the go ahead and then things will move from there.

    Any questions let us know.

    Just got this…

  5. Good Morning all

Thanks for the update Bada. It all seems to be a sensible approach, it will be like going to your first game when we do get the chance to go back.

In Belfast, at the cup final, they let households attend and so you had pockets of people beside each other rather than 1,000 people socially distanced and single tickets. Think the experience would feel better if the former.

I think they should let 1 member of the Green Brigade stand with a loud hailer and a drum….people could shout out requests…

  9. Slabhoy - on the road to 10 on

A wee summary of some common threads knocking around the cyberverse. If all of this were to occur I’d be delighted…

Here’s a wee input to the Celtic conversation

Nae mucking aboot then, I’ve been saying most of this for weeks anyway……

    Highest Probability:

    Duffy and Turnball in

    Hickey to decide today

Celtic still telling Agents we after a goalie and a striker.

    Rogic to go

Klimala open to a loan. A strategic move to fast-track his development. Interesting to see the versatile Harper on the bench on Saturday – forward and right winger!

    Griff to stay.

Ajer on the market if a bid of 20m plus comes in (him and Frimmers were bad boys but I’ll no perpetuate rumours, both sanctioned)…

Christie’s head being turned by the EPL (a good source said Southampton and Everton)

Dembele’s agent asking for a guarantee of game time and Lennon’s plans on his future…..

Celtic spoke to Lyon and PSG last week……not sure the specifics…doubt it was to sing Papa Francesco….

ECL qualification is absolutely critical this year from a financial perspective and if we are to avoid any major outgoings.

An agent pal telling me CalMac would be Celtic’s most sought after player after Eddie should we fail to qualify.

The Rogic and Moussa Demeble money will help

In a game of probabilities some of this might come true…but that’s the consensus from the ITKs

There is some really interesting news coming out of Turkey this morning, with Haber Turk and Sporx reporting that Celtic have agreed a fee for Trabzonspor attacker Caleb Ekuban.

Haber Turk, one of the most popular Turkish news outlets, believes that the Hoops have agreed an €8million (£7.2m) fee with the Turkish club plus bonuses.

The source believes that Ekuban is expected to arrive in Glasgow in the next two to three days in order to complete his medical. This is despite news that Trabzonspor manager Eddie Newton urged their board not to sell the striker.

    ____

Report is probably rubbish. I’ve learned in the last couple of weeks not to trust in the quality of things coming from Turkey.

  12. Reassuring to read this from the official website, “Should supporter access to the stadium still be restricted in August and September, the Club are able to confirm that any UEFA home qualifying matches (in the first 3 qualifying rounds) will also be made available to affected Season Ticket holders via the Pass to Paradise.”

The only slight downside to my own Pass to Paradise experience is the fact that the coverage is about 90 seconds delayed. So don’t have any other online distractions going on if you want to avoid spoilers!

  13. I am sad to hear of the death of Pat McCluskey at just 68.

Remember, he had the guts to step up and score a penalty in the 1972 European Cup semi-final shootout.

    That’s courage.

    May he rest in peace.

Sounds similar to the Murrayfield experience in 2014 v the Icelanders. Quite enjoyed that (and the novelty of feeling welcomed by the security guys and even the polis!)

  17. No Bobby Does It Petta on

Hopefully the rumours of Caleb Ekuban are just that. The boy has a terrible scoring record, 1 goal in 20 appearances for Leeds; and most recently, 10 goals in 50 appearances for the Turkish mob.

    No thanks.

  18. Go tell the Spartim on

Is Ekuban not more of a winger than a striker, some Turkish ITk (I know 🙄) seem to think so, if he does come then it’s the boot up the arse you know who needs 😉

Isn’t he a winger. Plays on the left. Competition for Mikey and allows us to move Moi to No. 10 after Tam Rogic goes?

Turkeybhoy…your views on Ekuban? I presume you have seen a lot of him. Winger rather than out and out striker? A wee bit suspicious now of things that come out of Turkey…😊

  21. Pat McCluskey.

When I was about 16, I was signed by Celtic, same cohort as Pat McCluskey. One evening, I was with Celtic reserves, on the bench, at a game against Queen of the South. Jock Stein happened to come along that evening to watch from the bench. Pat McCluskey had a good game; and I remember Jock Stein commenting on him favourably during the game. Some weeks (or months) later, at the end of the season, virtually all the youngsters signed the previous year were released – apart from Pat McCluskey! Ability – but also showing it at the right time!

Very dangerous news coming from the imbeciles in charge of our game. They want a vote to enable them to award the league after 50% of the games are played,if needs must.I would hope that means every club has played the required,50%.We will be seriously behind, with the Scottish Cup games to be played.

Reading the Turkish sport paper headlines this morning, normally decent ,but as they dont eat Pork, they are serial Lamb munchies,H,mmm.Anyway, they are reporting the same story about Ekuban. He is not an out and out striker, and can play anywhere along the front. Two footed.Which is handy for anyone.Turkish sports writers are fanatical, but in no way should be confused with Turkish Sports top replica makers, who are shit.

  23. I had the pleasure of meeting and drinking with Pat McCluskey a few times in the 1990’s in The Hoops Bar on The Gallowgate.
