Free money

564

Delighted and surprised of what I hear of the value of our new shirt sponsor, Dafabet, who become main sponsor, with their names on the front of the shirts, for the next four seasons. This is the best commercial deal every written in Scottish football.  Pretty much all revenue channels have been inching south for years, so being able to deliver a sponsorship deal well ahead of anything we’ve achieved before is hopefully a sign things are turning.

Bringing commercial deals like this into the club is the equivalent of what Brian Quinn once called ‘free money’. It’s total margin, without any fulfilment cost, and doesn’t rely on the fans putting their hands in their pockets.

More free money

Offering Magners the shoulder position on the jersey is a ‘more free money’ opportunity. The Irish cider makers are also here for the next four seasons, extending their stay on the shirts to seven years. I’d never considered a back of the shirt sponsor, but it’s clearly a prime slot for TV coverage. And it also doesn’t rely on fans putting their hands in their pockets.

Magners ‘get’ Celtic. They understand what we’re about and our social mission. Impressively so, for such a large organisation. Really pleased they remain in place.

Re Hearts tickets, surely safety regulations dictate that tickets must have a number of safeguards to reduce possibility of “forgery” or is it just another excuse for semi-disguised bigotry?? HH

Hearts use a manual entry system were the stub is taken at the turnstile, so I’m not sure how they would know that our section of the ground was full. It would be impossible to tell unless there was some sort of real time counting system in place?

It’s very likely it was deliberate to exclude fans who were late. They’ve been treating our fans like crap for long enough, it time our club done something about it. They were happy to give us the full allocation and take our coin when they were in administration.

DIdn’t get a ticket for Tynecastle this time but recollection it was the old-fashioned tear off a stub. Unless the turnstyle operator is also able to scan the stub to computer register the entry presumably it is left to the individual turnstile rotary dial. Whether this operates in real time I do not know but after Hillsborough etc I would have thought that the local council licensing authority would wish to examine procedures at Tynecastle as it seems a tad antiquated. If asked, the police will naturally deny this.

Budge will then blame a breakdown in communications.

It’s strange indeed that she states that this happened at an earlier game against us. No proof offered for either case, but if Celtic fans can forge tickets,so too can fans of other clubs.

  25. In the wake of all the criticism offered by some respected bloggers, I re-read what I thought was an innocuous lead article at the start of this blog and, open to elucidation as I am, I still don’t get it.

Leaving aside the criticism that Paul67 should be writing an overall critical article about Board dealings so that they have something to get tore into (my advice is continue to write your own critique with the freedom the blog allows and stop demanding others to write it for you: The lead article has never determined or limited or, even, influenced much whatever mince or quality will follow from the contributors, myself especially) , I will limit my comment from here on in to the 2 issues most have complained about. Firstly, the use of the phrase “free money” and secondly, the use of our shirts to promote a gambling firm and a drinks firm.

Here is what the leader actually says about free money:-

“Bringing commercial deals like this into the club is the equivalent of what Brian Quinn once called ‘free money’. It’s total margin, without any fulfilment cost, and doesn’t rely on the fans putting their hands in their pockets.”

It puts the phrase in quotation marks, thereby indicating that it is, not necessarily, the description that everyone would use. It is attributed to Brian Quinn so, perhaps, we should take it up with him. In addition the terms whereby, it can be seen as “free” are totally defined in the quote above, i.e. it is money that does not have to be paid by the fan at the gate (therefore,it is money that we would, otherwise, lack, or we would have to raise by different means- selling players, reducing quality by reducing pay, or being sugar daddied with “free money” from directors. The only sense I have discerned about the objections to the phrase are those that say it is nonsensical (which it would have been if it had not already provided the quoted definition of its limited sense) or it is immoral which brings us into the second point.

The sponsorship message promotes alcohol and gambling- it does not promote Alcoholism and Gambling Addiction. These products exist legally, they are talked about and indulged in on this site. We entice people to raise worthwhile funds for good causes by use of football match predictors, a form of gambling, and by arranging good nights out where we know drink will be taken, and sometimes to excess by some of us.

Now, I know there is a relation between advertising and use, otherwise why would advertising exist. though many of us refuse to believe we are influenced by the relentless propaganda/ advertising we get on Scottish media. There is a legitimate argument to be made to restricting the ability to advertise gambling and alcohol products. It is less legitimate and a bit more sniffy to argue that we should restrict these products just from the Celtic jersey or the ground and environs at Celtic Park. Otherwise, we just raise a bar for Celtic to compete with the other clubs, and there are many, who do benefit from this “free money” (note the quotation marks again).

However, a ban on advertising would be close to “gesture politics”. It would be tackling one factor in a multi-factorial problem and not even the most troublesome one. As Summa of Sammi noted in his depiction of the problem in Australia, widespread availability of quick means to lose loads of money without responsible stewardship restricting gambling site owners and licensed premises owners from refusing or restricting service to people over their limit, is a bigger part of this.

We have an element of free will. Prohibition was a total failure. Advertising restrictions may reduce some knowledge of the availability of drink and gambling but, we restrict advertisement for pornography and everyone knows where to find it. If you have ever asked your child to wait outside a pub or bookies while you had a quick drink or bet, it is hypocritical to be sniffy about Sponsorship of these products on jerseys. Would anyone be convinced about an alcoholic or gambling addict suing a football team because their hero had a drinking or gambling site advertised on their shirt? Well maybe some juries could be fooled into believing this but I doubt it.

Now, as it happens, I would happily forego the advertisement of betting or alcohol drinking on football shirts if it was an agreed industry-wide or sports-wide agreement but not as a go it alone gesture. I am not impressed by the Barcelona- Unicef gesture because this is a club with enough corrupt money practices that it needed this good publicity.

So let us please tackle the scourge of Alcoholism and Gambling without restricting the rights of non-addicted consumers to use these products responsibly.

And let’s read what exactly was said and defined as “free money” before deciding it is a meaningless or misleading phrase.

I am in work now and will catch replies later
