Free money

564

Delighted and surprised of what I hear of the value of our new shirt sponsor, Dafabet, who become main sponsor, with their names on the front of the shirts, for the next four seasons. This is the best commercial deal every written in Scottish football.  Pretty much all revenue channels have been inching south for years, so being able to deliver a sponsorship deal well ahead of anything we’ve achieved before is hopefully a sign things are turning.

Bringing commercial deals like this into the club is the equivalent of what Brian Quinn once called ‘free money’. It’s total margin, without any fulfilment cost, and doesn’t rely on the fans putting their hands in their pockets.

More free money

Offering Magners the shoulder position on the jersey is a ‘more free money’ opportunity. The Irish cider makers are also here for the next four seasons, extending their stay on the shirts to seven years. I’d never considered a back of the shirt sponsor, but it’s clearly a prime slot for TV coverage. And it also doesn’t rely on fans putting their hands in their pockets.

Magners ‘get’ Celtic. They understand what we’re about and our social mission. Impressively so, for such a large organisation. Really pleased they remain in place.

I don’t think its a coincidence that we do a couple of sponsorship deals followed by ST price’s held

This is PL in his area of expertise – brilliant work

If only we had someone that had the same talent for buying good football players and picking good Managers

  2. “Next season we will again be offering kids’ season books, starting at the fantastic price of just £50 for children aged 12 and under. This will mean kids aged 12 and under will be able to attend 19 matches at just £2.63 per game.

This season book will cover 19 matches and for the first time will guarantee the right to buy tickets for two sell-out games at a concession price.”

At the AGM I asked the question about the kids season book price. My early reaction to this is one of real disappointment. This is squeezing the margins to an unacceptable degree.

My 11 year old daughter can go to all games except two. Two “sell-out” games. So this is how we squeeze margins and squirm out of the ‘Old Firm’ tie in. This charge did not exist last year when we supported the team in a half empty stadium. Who will decide what the sell out games are? CL qualifier 1 and 2? Two games v The Rangers? A mixture? Of course it’s an Old Firm tie in. Stand alone policy my arse.

I mean, really. Who came up with this? We are going to squeeze parents for concession price tickets for two extra games. What a target. What a bloody target for revenue Peter.

Anyway, matters not at the moment. Me and my daughter will not be spending £500 between us on season tickets and £20 per match in the Kerrydale and kiosks until you address Resolution 12. How about targeting the things that matter to fans rather than targeting the fans. Time’s up.

Some of this stems from people requesting upgrades to child STs for OF games in the past.

Now the fact that it was so poisonous at these games that people wanted to do this speaks volumes in itself.

It also leads me to suspect that TRFC will be receiving the same extended allocation that Rangers did. Acknowledgement that they’re the same team, or simply acknowledgement that the new team has the same size of support?

I’m honestly surprised and please by the freeze in prices.

  4. !!Bada Bing!! on

WEEMINGER-The price freeze is down to RD’s failure, and Lawwells for appointing him.I would gladly have paid another £50,if we had a plan to buy better quality players, and attracting a good manager,38,000 x 50 is a huge loss HH

  5. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

    Yeah….Season Ticket freeze.

Pay the same price to be cheated all over again.

    No thanks.

    Look there’s a squirrel.

  6. Then allow them to upgrade at full price.

    1. There is a clear link to the season ticket holder for accountability of the person taking the seat

    2. The parent can make grown up parent choices

    3. Season tickets in the area given up to marauders can be separately priced. That is what used to happen and is of course sensible. We sit in the opposite end of the stadium.

Yes, price freeze is welcome for whom it applies. It has been decided that they are not frozen for under 13’s. That’s an unacceptable isolated target for revenue in today’s climate.

SETTINGFREETHEBEARS is essentially pointing out realpolitik in football finances.

Yes,we would all love an ethically and morally pure product. Although that highlights the question of who decides it to be those things.

    But life isn’t like that.

Jock Stein famously said that you won’t win anything with eleven Charlie Gallagers or Harry Hoods. It’s exactly the same thing. It’s pragmatism, reality over dreams.

Aye,it hurts. It sure as hell hurt Charlie and Harry.

Look,I can give chapter and verse on reasons for hitting out at PL. for instance, why no mention of the value of DB or NB when he was so quick to trumpet the value of their predecessors?

but the criticism for this is over the top. Top dollar,I’m cool with it.

    Won’t be using them,though.

  9. So we’re going to have Magners (Swally) on the back of the shirts, Dafabet (Bookies) on the front of the shirt, what’s next? Embassy Regal on the socks!

It’s a bit sneaky I agree but the whole cost structure of adult and child packages is totally different now, as well as the fact that due to lower ST sales there’s currently no need for ‘Special’ STs.

Speaking for myself, it’s a welcome move. If I renew (probably not at the moment) I wouldn’t be taking the kids to those games anyway, so I’m happy that two alternatives are included in their ST price. I may be alone in that opinion.

  11. Look! If your not happy, and you don’t like the prices? Then don’t go, find something else to do on a Sat. Me? I couldent, I’m renewing its what I will do, I’v no agenda, I’m not anti board, or PL, or DD, new money coming into the club, with the new bumper contract on advertising, and season book prices frozen, I’m good with that, res.12 will look after its self, some people are using it as an excuse of not renewing, fair enough no problem, and some are Huns who lurk in here and con the former ones into believing they’r on their side, no matter what each to their own, well done PL and the CFC board, I for one am looking forward to the new season, bring it on.

  12. Sad that only Blantyrekev has picked up on the so called price Freeze for season tickets

A freeze for all full paying adult season tickets

If not in the above category, you can pay separately for the 2 potential ? 2 games we may have against a brand new club just promoted to the SPFL to play for the first time

Sad, how that group of fans is being disenfranchised to accommodate

    SFTB,

As I understand it the argument against the alcohol industry/gambling industry and their participation in sports events is the commonly acknowledged link between young people and their vulnerability to this type of type of advertising.

Young people tend to see athletes as role models and don’t tend to associate the health dangers presented by alcohol for example.

It isn’t just about the dangers of long term addiction, speak to any A&E Consultant or nurse for example.

Perhaps the ‘Free Money’ that advertisers are so keen to hand to sports clubs has some form of a hidden cost?

You are right though Celtic have to compete, maybe it’s a question of balance?

Perhaps. in time this form of advertising will be viewed along similar lines as tobacco advertising. Maybe Ronny will tell us what the law is in Norway in relation to alcohol advertising and sports events, before he goes?

Magners do get Celtic. Unfortunately through their owners C&C, they have in the past ‘got’ the SFA (Tennents) and Sevco (Blackthorn).

  15. COWIEBHOY on 4TH MAY 2016 11:00 AM

Yep. It only works out as a freeze if you go to every single home game. If the 2 ‘sell-out’ games are the league games against TRFC, then I would hope the alternative two games in the child ST (given that the price is for 19 games) are not friendlies or something.

Our Non-Execs are Ian Bankier (bless), Tom Allison, Dermot Desmond, Eric Riley, Brian Wilson and Ian Livingston.

Both Execs are Accountants by profession, as are Eric Riley and Ian Livingston. These guys know Accounting and Finance. That’s what they were educted and trained to do, and it’s the core skill they bring to the board.

Ian Bankier (bless) is a Lawyer by profession. He knows the Law.

Brian Wilson is a politician. I’m not aware of any specific qualifications one requires in this regard, but having been a Member of Parliament for 28 years, one assumes he’s an expert in the profession of Politics by experience. He is also a Journalist by education and Publisher by profession, and is a Professor of Government & Media at Glasgow Cally, evidencing what he knows best.

Tom Allison’s professional qualifications are unknown to me, and while I think he’s a qualified Accountant, he has had a long career in Shipping and Property Development. A long career. Tom Allison is the go-to man for shipping and property deals.

Dermot Desmond is a Banker by training, and an entrereneur by choice. Dermot invests in a wide range of businesses from property to banking to telecoms to mining nd more besides. Dermot is a considerable success and is the go-to man for investment advice.

All of our Directors are highly experienced business managers. They know and understand business.

We are currently in the process of recruiting a Football Manager. Who of the above is competent to assess the professional knowledge and skill of the candidates?

Where is the Football Professional? Where is the domain expertise?

Who among the Directors is able to distinguish between a candidate who can talk the talk, from one who walks the walk?

Unless we are intent on appointing a candidate whose experience and track record testifies to his knowledge and expertise, I’d get Gordon Strachan on the interview panel to kick their tyres.
