Free money

564

Delighted and surprised of what I hear of the value of our new shirt sponsor, Dafabet, who become main sponsor, with their names on the front of the shirts, for the next four seasons. This is the best commercial deal every written in Scottish football.  Pretty much all revenue channels have been inching south for years, so being able to deliver a sponsorship deal well ahead of anything we’ve achieved before is hopefully a sign things are turning.

Bringing commercial deals like this into the club is the equivalent of what Brian Quinn once called ‘free money’. It’s total margin, without any fulfilment cost, and doesn’t rely on the fans putting their hands in their pockets.

More free money

Offering Magners the shoulder position on the jersey is a ‘more free money’ opportunity. The Irish cider makers are also here for the next four seasons, extending their stay on the shirts to seven years. I’d never considered a back of the shirt sponsor, but it’s clearly a prime slot for TV coverage. And it also doesn’t rely on fans putting their hands in their pockets.

Magners ‘get’ Celtic. They understand what we’re about and our social mission. Impressively so, for such a large organisation. Really pleased they remain in place.

Totally in agreement. I could have written that myself. Well actually I couldn’t as I’m not erudite enough but you know what I mean.

I think the header ‘ free money’ has skewed some opinion, but like yourself, reading the article gave some context.

Re addictions, yes it’s true gambling has ruined the lives of many, and I’ve no doubt advertising has played a part in the modern commutation era, but addiction to gambling is nothing new, whether it be bingo, one arm bandits, casinos, nags or whatever. Online gaming has to have contributed but I’d argue is not the main or only reason for it.

As always, a considered and well reasoned post.

I would like to add that there are reasons why some people become addicts whilst the majority ( I think) do not. Until the reasons are either removed or cured, the addictions will continue. Advertising, of course, makes even harmful products seem more acceptable but I agree with you that , in sport, any ban on certain products is not very effective as a stand alone policy.

    Free money.

    There is no free money.

    We pay by promoting addiction.

Why not go the whole hog and promote drugs as well.

    Pathetic attempts to normalize it.

    Yeah….everybody else is doing it.

Posters quite happy to defend it as well.

Selling your a### for money isn’t the answer.

Maybe a bit of truth and a reality check required for some.

Quite happy to crow about sponsorship deals…..but when it comes to hun cheating….silence.

  4. Said it yesterday. There is no such a thing as ‘Free Money’.

Earlier poster mentioned the futility of banning individual products.

In the case of Celtic with drink and gambling all we ask is that they do not promote them.

Yeah….tell us how wonderful our new sponsorship deal is.

And how lucky we are to be patronised by the tory plc.

But not a word about the hun cheating, the media attacks on Celtic, or the way Celtic fans are violently attacked.

    Zilch.

Yeah….whoopee….new sponsors, but the same old bs as per usual

Looks like TD beat me to it but this is a reply I received from JPT:

“Yes in terms of her statement although she has a point to an extent it has to be considered that her procedures failed.

In terms of what happened, this is the story from my perspective:

For a variety of reasons a small number of fans arrived at or just after kick off, I believe this to be 14 fans in different groups.

On arrival they were advised by Police Scotland that the Section was full and to contact me for a refund. I was in the Stadium blissfully unaware but was contacted at Half Time by one of the guys locked out. On hearing what happened I contacted the Control Room to find out if the fans could be allowed access. I was advised that the computer system which monitors the admissions indicated that the section was full. The Match Commander therefore took the decision that no more fans would be allowed in. I know from my own experience at Celtic Park that when an area shows as full there is no option but to immediately stop admitting fans and this was the case on Saturday.

At full time I was in touch with a few of those locked out on Twitter to advise on how to proceed in terms of getting their money refunded. Subsequently I advised that I had enquired about them getting access but it wasn’t possible as the section was at capacity. Today I made contact with Hearts who advised that the section was full when the last of the fans arrived and on that basis it could not be reopened.

Hearts agreed to refund fans with valid tickets who missed the match or replace them with ticket for Celtic’s next visit to Tynecastle and the fans affected have now been advised of this.

I hope this helps give you a bit more background but if you have any questions please just let me know.”

A more balanced article that acknowledged some of the obvious moral and ethical drawbacks may have been more appropriate. The money may be ‘free’ but the true cost extends beyond the concept of fans putting their hands in their pocket or 100% margin. We are supposed to be more than a club.

  14. To me it looks like the Tyncastle system is faulty, if the computer says the section is full, and it isn’t, then it could also go the other way, more room when there is none, needs to be looked at ASAP, lessons are supposed to have been learned, let’s make sure the homework is done, safety at all times.

    Oh I see.

The incidents of domestic violence, which rose markedly after the sevco semi….. were primarily fuelled by alcohol.

So in reality….the plc don’t mind the consequences of promoting alcohol and by extension domestic violence…as long as they get their bonuses.

Yeah….thats something to be proud of eh

    Shame on the plc

  19. I was listening to a sports phone in, and zombies and many other clubs fans phoning in saying Celtic would be no where if it wasent for Griffiths? I didn’t get that? You could name every team on the planets top goal scorers and say the same thing it’s very obvious I thought or is it me? No, it wasent me, it was the CS phone in, oh! And the Huns phoning in saying they glad Dundee Untd. Went down as they where one of the teams who put RFC in the lowest division in Scottish football? And here was me thinking RFC where liquidated and no longer existed, and a new club called Sevco 5088 applied for membership and got in? That did happen right? Reason I’m asking is that the Clyde program made the callers none the wiser.
