Griffiths value outweighs the baggage

229

While there was plenty to cheer on Sunday, the sight of Leigh Griffiths, stripped and sitting in the stand was among the most encouraging.  Leigh’s contribution to winning the league last season, when his return to action after the winter break coincided with Celtic’s return to form, should not be overstated.

When all seemed lost for him on the news that he was not in good enough condition to travel with the squad to France in July, we discussed how it was foolish to write him off.  Leigh is one of the most natural goal scorers we have seen at Celtic this century.  He has natural pace, confidence and an attitude that will not easily be subverted.

At 30 and with a payload of baggage, it is unlikely he will illicit an attractive move, either for him or for the club, so I suspect (hope) he will be around to play his part this season.  That could start as early as Thursday, if we need a goal late in the game.

  1. Delaney’s and all those who were in The Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam on this day in 1982 , happy when it’s spring again , we’ll sing again , 2 1 in Amsterdam day.

We had 8 home grown players involved in that game.

Let’s hope Leigh does what he is best at , sticking the ball in the pokey if he gets back into the team.

I’ve just read stuff about Trump’s debt and his loss making businesses . Reminds me of a certain Knight of the realm here and how he is a nasty bit of business too. Thankfully Murray never got involved , openly, in politics.

  2. Tosb But what has he done that we know as fact and not hearsay , he was never overweight imo my point is for what he cost and what he has done for us he deserves better than what some posters have said about showing him the door , we should all remember the more huns hate them the more we should embrace them , ;) Thanks for replying by the way :)

  4. When Leigh hammered in two free kicks against England the world of football knew who he was. He was certainly good enough to play in the EPL.

His slide these past two seasons is due to a variety of niggling injuries and his private life dramas (guess the two may be linked).

He has, at times, let the club down with his approach to being a professional athlete. As far as I am aware, the club has continued to support him publicly and privately.

If he can keep things together, he might yet provide a couple of great seasons of entertainment.

I would speculate that games and goals are the best therapy for Leigh.

    Come on Leigh!

    …………………………..

Some fans see his behaviour as being disrespectful and unprofessional which to an extent it has been. Leigh had the sympathy of everyone when he was given extended time off by the club due to mental health issues he was experiencing at the time. They have been angered that he has returned from lockdown in an unfit condition to play for Celtic. That is very unprofessional. He has let a lot of people down and lost a lot of the sympathy and compassion they had for him.

I’m prepared to forgive him and hope he starts to bang in the goals again very soon.

Can’t say ‘the fans’ favourite’ is a favourite of this particular fan, but all good if he can make a positive contribution.

On no account would I want to rely on him.

  9. Poor Cierto, a wonderful night. The F the Pope banner some Ajax fans displayed , never lasted long. I’m sure it was tore down by other Ajax supporters.

We were all in the ground for ages after the game as the riot police had their hands full stopping Ajax fans trying to get at us.

  10. I was listening too the game in pal’s bedroom.. 2 sinle beds. when second goal went in I leapt from sitting over the other bed! now that impossible without the surge of adrenilin

  11. Por Cierto.

    I too was there.

Charlie’s goal was amongst the best that you will ever see.

I remember them taking off Cruyff with a few minutes to go.

It seemed like they all wanted to give him a standing ovation.

Big Toby ruined it for them .

  12. You knew you were young when at 2.30, you and your pal could run all the way to Celtic Park, get a lift over the turnstile, up the stairs, and watch the teams coming out…

  13. TOSB They have been angered that he has returned from lockdown in an unfit condition to play for Celtic. See imo that is simply not true ,he was fit to play and Lenny gave that as an excuse (maybe to protect the player ) to cover for the real reason , did he look unfit or overweight to you ? What has he ever done that we know for fact not hearsay ? Anyway we all want the same thing a successful and entertaining team for us to cheer and for huns to cry about it , lets reunite the Griff an Eddy show . :)

  14. Big George’s Fan Club – my pal’s dad told me he was like you listening on the radio but on his knees praying our winning goal was not disallowed. He said even Richard ‘Ibrox’ Park who was commentating, was going bananas about our second goal.

It was either that night or the previous one , Dundee United beat PSV in Eindhoven.

The trip was worth missing the Jam playing at Ingilston the night before.

  15. Delaney’s .

I think I first met you on a supporters bus that went to Rotterdam for the Feyenoord tournament .

That would have been a few short weeks before the Amsterdam fixture.

    Is my memory correct?

  16. RPMCELTICFAN, the St Roch’s president has been on the Celtic State of mind podcast . Leigh and his bother had been training at St Roch’s park in June. He said Leigh did not look overweight and his general fitness was good .

  17. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM Yes you’ve made that clear with your posts , which player would you rely on , by the way im a Celtic supporter not a Griff or any other player supporter ,no one is bigger that the Club , what im trying to say is imagine he was a new sighing 225 goals in 457 games he would be getting folk excited at the prospect of him giving us the firepower for the ten :)

  19. VST valid in Ireland and UK for Sarajevo match, 7.00pm kick off, I assume for others its on Celtic TV?

  20. Tiny Tim, Murdo Macleod caught Cruyff ‘s ankle near the end of the match . The television footage shows the Ajax physio on and taking ages before deciding to get Johan off the pitch. It was still 1 each at the time. Murdo shouts at the physio and Cruyff , get yerselves tae f@@@.

You are right about our first goal , a magnificent finish. Nicholas also set up George McLuskey up really well for our winner.

  21. Perfect chance for the club to PPV the bejaysus out of the Sarajevo game for the non-VST crew.

    Surely?

Harry Kane was interviewed after the game and referred to Griffiths as the Scottish lad who scored the 2 goals.

No respect for Kane since then.

  23. The victims and their families of Ballymurphy and Bloody Sunday will never get the justice they deserve. Outrageous but expected decision.

  24. Phil bhoy,I heard that interview too. In their build up , the England coaches would have given them the names of our players but the English players were too arrogant to remember them going by that interview.

I had a Premier Sports subscription just to watch Celtic, so disappointed it’s not being shown by them as advertised (subscription now cancelled).

For the the life of me I don’t understand why Celtic can’t make the game available on a PPV basis to those without a VST. Ditto for all the home games.

The PPV option can easily be removed when some form of normality returns and fans are allowed back in to the stadium.

Can’t help but think Celtic are leaving much needed revenue on the table.

  26. Bada

    Forget that `Why?`

I thought you meant the VST should be available to all.

    Silly bugger that I am.

  27. HS- why not? It’s not as if it’s a home game, so shouldn’t be exclusive to ST Holders, the Club could make enough to cover their own costs in buying rights to the game IMO

  28. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM I had a Premier Sports subscription just to watch Celtic, so disappointed it’s not being shown by them as advertised Yup me too, so it looks as though I will have to do a Likely Lads tribute on the day of the game ;(

  29. Dundee Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Jonathan Afolabi from Celtic on a season long loan.
