Kenny Clark missing the point on human bias

253

Former referee, Kenny Clark, spoke to the BBC on the subject of bias in referees last night: “For anyone to suggest that a referee would work for 10 or 15 years to get to the top level of refereeing in Scotland and would then cheat the fans simply in order to give ‘his team’ an advantage is just nonsensical.”

Putting aside for one moment all recent issues in our game, everyone is prone to bias, conscious or otherwise.  It is part of the human condition. If referees insist they are immune, they are contributing to the problem.  Instead, they should be aware of the potential.  Former referees should encourage them to be vigilant.

Clark explains how much work goes into getting to the top in refereeing and that it would ridiculous to jeopardise a career to help your football team, but he is missing the point.  No wonder refereeing is in such a mess if they go around telling each other they are not affected by the human condition.  They are human, they make mistakes and are as subject to bias as any other group of professionals.

Clark was happy to cite the new SFA procedures as being sourced from English football, but omitted the add that English football addresses this very question of unintended bias by asking referees which team they support.

  6. Shuggy jr speaki g to a relative of Celt player who said there was an outbreak of the dreaded lurgy at Celtic park on 29 December. Hence the insipid display BR did not want this as an excuse. So roll on March 30. Looking forward to seeing Ollie Burke. Makes Usain Bolt look like a slouch !

  7. Southampton must have a barrow load of money yet have mostly bang average players, especially up front. Relying on Redmond and Long for goals won’t win them many games.

Puts in to perspective how hard it must be for us to find quality players. And more so, quality strikers.

Regarding refs , the Sevco minded majority will favour Sevco because they are fans AND they want to further their cushy careers.

The Celtic (or at least non-Sevco) minded minority will favour Sevco because they want to further their cushy careers regardless.

Last thought for the night……..Stuart Armstrong was head and shoulders (see what I did there?) above his team mates tonight. His movement and football intelligence are what I miss most about him in the hoops.

  14. Evening Troops.. Hail Hail…

Taking all of Pauls points in the leader, and remembering the filthy piece of hun lies and propaganda by scum rangers pr officer tom english last week.. what chance of equality does the Catholic population in a general sense, stand (outside of football) if Scotland were to gain Independence, such is the bias against us.

The Brexiteers south of the border are living in a bygone age, hankering for the good old days of the Empire.. ‘Last of the Summer Wine, Call the Midwife, and Dad’s Army’. Days when children played cricket on the village green and we celebrated the Coronation and Jubilee with street parties and bunting. Like a scene from a Hovis advert. When they could send ‘a Man from the Ministry’ in a bowler hat, briefcase and rolled umbrella to sort out johnny foreigner.

As a Nation, we are a million miles from that… But, would all our inventiveness, skill, ingenuity and the attributes that have seen us give so much to the World, be lost as we would be subdued by the ancient orders of the orangemen and masons??

Back to Pauls article again for proof??

Cant wait for Saturday night to see my beloved Celtic back in action. H H.

  15. Jermaine Defoe is like Andy Gray and Senderos and Barton– they think that becauae their 36 year old legs have gone in England, they’ll still be ok for Scotland.

I seen Robbie Keane score a hat-trick at Rugby Park and I seen him kicked all over Ibrox but he was 29 and a better player than the above.

It looks like we’re hanging everything on Casragne for right-back.

  16. Much ado about KC and his statement on bias.

Lots of theories so I’ll throw in another possibility for consideration.

Referees progress through the ranks based not on their performances but on how their supervisors judge their weekly performance.

Given that the blazer clad, pinky rattling supervisors are mainly active members of the Lanarkshire Masonic fraternity, it behoves ambitious referees to curry (CURRY?) favour in the same circles.

They will obviously want to please their Masonic masters and will be in lockstep with their hopes and wishes for the revival team off PRW.

So given the opportunity to please the supervisory board, and confident in the knowledge that there will be no consequences, and indeed maybe even be rewarded with a choice trip abroad, they act with reckless abandon to ensure Celtic are constrained at every opportunity.

  17. Good morning… a cold and frosty morning here in the Chilterns…

    NALLY81 @ 12:38 AM,

That’s interesting and there are any number of examples you can cite…

My concern with regard to Defoe would be this…

Steven Gerrard’s Sevco Rangers have had an incredible amount of shots on goal, despite the hype they don’t have a striker worth the name.

Defoe was, amongst other things, a classic “poacher”, if he still has that in his locker he will score goals.

Also, Keane was kicked to bits, was given little protection by the Scottish referees.

Not only will Defoe be protected but he’ll be given free kicks round the box and penalties as soon as a defender comes near him.

Kilmarnock away on that pitch might be a tuff first call but my prediction, don’t expect Sevco to be dropping the points they did in the first half of the Season.

    Hail Hail

  18. Just spotted a headline on Celticnewsnow, “Reputable journalist claims Celtic are eyeing up double switch”.

Thought ‘Oh oh this could be good.’

It’s a bit ironic that the vast sums of TV money poured into the English leagues has effectively destroyed what was one of the great football competitions in the world, the FA Cup. Now considered by many EPL clubs to be an inconvenience rather than the prestige tournament that it once was. Money has changed football completely and not for the better.

    Hi pot

Good wee post, highlighting how more money does not mean more competition,it destroys it.

When I was growing up,(9iar with integrity, there was mostly a different side winning the 1st division, different teams winning their cups, that does not happen now.

Since the start of sky’s epl the big monies went to the big clubs continuously,Arsenal were heralded for finishing top4 for years without winning anything.guised well as top4 meant more money for mediocre champs league performance.

The amount coming into epl also distorts players and who owns them, the amount of players owned by epl club’s but out on loan is scary and is imo anti bosman.

Long gone are the days of anyone winning it,(yeh I know leicester) but in your mega rich epl you know it’s city or liverpool

Best league in world my arse,it’s an overblown, overhyped, overmarketed televised guff.ok if your earning in it tho!

    Hope your good mate

  21. Glendalytonsils,ie Stuart Armstrong, best player in the Southampton team last night,I must have been watching another game,to me he was hopeless, personally I’m glad he isn’t playing for us anymore, not consistent enough for me,

  22. This is what we’re up against,

“Partly as a result of Celtic’s campaign, assistant referee Steven Craven has resigned following his part in the decision not to award Celtic a penalty against Dundee United two weeks ago.

Craven’s family had been abused in the aftermath of that match, which Celtic won 2-1.”
