Key action for Celtic tonight is in Brussels, not Paris

I can tell how much you are looking forward to this one tonight……….. Paris Saint-Germain thoroughly humbled us at Celtic Park in September. They are have won all Champions League games and dropped only four points from 13 Ligue 1 games this season. This is a team without obvious weaknesses and with spare capacity to burn. We will do well to come closer on this occasion than we did in September.

What will be just as important, are events 200 miles north in Brussels, where Anderlecht face Bayern Munich. Even a point for Anderlecht will be enough for the Belgian champions to take a viable game plan to Glasgow for match day six. Anderlecht have zero points after four games with a three point deficit to Celtic. After Celtic’s 0-3 win in Brussels the Belgians will almost certainly need to finish above Celtic on points, and that will mean taking something tonight.

If Anderlecht can reduce the deficit to two points, they will come to Celtic Park hoping for the combination of missed chances/random red card/penalty that any underdog can exploit.

You might be feeling sore later, but if Bayern Munich do their business appropriately, we will achieve our European objectives for the season, no matter what happens in Paris.

  1. Brendan Rodgers is quoted in the Times to-day saying Paris Saint Germain’s lavish spending made a mockery of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations because it was hard to argue how it could be fair. Reading some of the comments to-day of how Celtic were ‘hammered’, ‘thumped’ in the previous encounter by the Quatar backed outfit has me undecided about watching to-night’s match whch I may record and watch later if the result is half decent. If not we will have the usual pundits and chancers emerging from the woodwork hyperventilating about Celtic’s Champion’s League credentials. Get this match out of the way as soon as possible and beckon the next round and the Cup game at the weekend.

  2. Watching the Chelsea game, Quarebag give away a penalty and get a player sent off. Now why dont we get luck like that?

  3. Our job tonight is to keep it tight especially early on, the longer the game goes on the more frustrated they will become. They will be expecting a repeat of the 5 they put past us in the last game. Lets disappoint them. HH

  4. F### it, respect nothing and get ripped into these sand-dancing, super-rich fannies, Celtic. Put them on their diamond-studded arses, greetin’ like… Well, a Neymar.

Off to pub. Boyata header anytime 40/1 .

  5. Me too B. As far as I’m concerned it’s a damage limitation exercise. Get out of there with all our key men available for Anderlecht & try to avoid a tanking.

  6. Don’t like it when we play ultra defensive but a pragmatic approach need to be adopted tonight sadly.

Providing we don’t give them too much credit and play in awe of them, if we play the Celtic way letting them worry about us instaed, we may have a chance of a half decent result.

  7. Gordon

The team last time, I’d say we’re stronger now, more settled. Dembele and Boyata being back are major plus’s.

  8. embramike says ” Yer team’s deid…Beat it!” on

    Today’s starting line up

Gordon; Lustig Boyata Simunovic Tierney; Brown Ntcham ; Forrest Rogic McGregor ; Dembele

Subs: De Vries Bitton Armstrong Sinclair Roberts Kouassi Griffiths

  9. Team tonight…

CELTIC (3-4-2-1) Gordon; Lustig, Boyata, Simunovic; Forrest, Brown, Ntcham, Tierney; Rogic, McGregor; Dembele

Subs: De Vries, Bitton, Roberts, Griffiths, Sinclair, Armstrong, Kouassi

  10. If Jozo is 100% it’s our strongest possible defense, with Olli & Broonie in front,

Great to see Paddy named in the Subs.

WE nearly have an injury free squad at this stage, fantastic news with the run of games coming up

Let’s hope it stays that way after tonight.

A wee bit of cart before horse.

All our key men fit for Sunday.

  12. I would have preferred Kouassi beside Brown and moved Ntcham into the role played by Rogic

Who knows ….. defend well and we might give them a wee fright .

Hopefully no injuries for the weekend .

    COYBIG ….. a draw :))

  13. Quonno agreed. What I meant there was yellow cards that would put them out of Anderlecht game but wouldn’t affect the Motherwell line up.

    Just didn’t express myself properly.

  14. I think the game will be much tighter tonight than the last game, I think that Celtic will go on and win 2-1.

  15. In the first game a lot of problems stemmed from midfield not tracking runners and central defenders being to far apart which left to much space for quality like Cavani.
