Ladbrokes SPFL-PR warning media to stop title stripping talk

1623

I’m told by a broadcast journalist friend that Jim Traynor, of PR company Level5, started Newco Rangers broadcast media conference yesterday with a warning to journalists that discussion about title stripping was off limits.

The law was that if manager Mark Warburton was asked about the proposed sanction for Oldco Rangers financial doping the conference would be stopped.

Say what you like about journalists, but they regard being told what to ask, or not to ask, as a line in the sand issue. Traynor, a journalist for decades, should have known better than to make such a rookie mistake.

He was told that attempts to subvert discussion about Oldco being stripped of titles is not something that would be accommodated. By the broadcast media, anyway.

Warburton was subsequently asked about title stripping and although he was happy to answer, I’m told, this angered the would-be news-denier, whereupon he “lost his temper”.

Post-conference there was a bit of chat about how they would be able to appropriately report on less-partisan issues, like the Level5 PR-controlled Ladbrokes SPFL, although there was a consensus that “He’ll fall out with everyone soon enough. He always does”.

  1. I hope I’m wrong and last night was just a case of us being extremely poor on the night but there’s a part of me that thought it looked like a team that weren’t prepared to try for their manager.

  2. I don’t know what the Molde CEO gets paid but rumour has it that he has a heated windscreen on his car. Shocking.

BADA BING. I respect your point of view but I do not see the same Celtic you see, I see Celtic dominating Scottish football with a good chance of winning the treble this season and if we do that will surely be improvement over last season. In Europe we have been poor but in our Group only Molde are showing any real form this can be confirmed by the fact we can still qualify from the group.I see a side who lost two quality Centre backs and have had no luck in trying to replace them due to injury. I see a manager who deserves our support not our anger.I believe when our injuries settle and we can pick from a fully fit squad Ronnys football vision will be seen. H.H.

I agree with a lot of your points

But to be fair, Lawwell and the board appoint the managers. They have been pretty hit and miss.

  5. HT may be true but how about trying for the fans or do you think that’s a futile notion!! H H Hebcelt

    Mr Pastry

As CEO Mr Lawwell’s job is to ensure Celtic enter each season in the strongest possible position to advance as far as possible in all competitions.

That means player trading must be largely completed early in the summer window if not in the January window.

Instead we have the obligatory rummage around the bargain bins of Europe on deadline day just after we have pocketed some money from selling a van dijk, Forster, wanyama or hooper.

This last minute rummage happens regardless of whether we get into the CL ( which reaped Ambrose miku lassad pukki Bitton) or slump into the Europa (scepovic Guidetti simunovic Blackett).

Nine names there, only one is a reliable first team player. The rest -jozo excepted, it’s too early to say -have been a money pit that has swallowed millions.

Not to mention the lost revenues arising from declining season ticket sales, non-CL participation , declining hospitality revenues.

It’s fair to ask questions of the CEO especially given also that it was he alone who appointed the manager who you want out the door.

My allegiance is to Celtic not a handsomely paid executive who is presiding over a fairly entrenched decline.

Ronny DEILA is finished as Celtic manager. Far to weak worst than Mowbray. Had to put the foot Down after Commons who’s poison spat the dummy out. Bottled it and poison answered him with that performance last night. Ronny take that away and analysis that. OUT YOUR DEPTH

In which case they should be turfed. They should be trying for the fans and at the very least for themselves.

  9. Hebcelt

Any professional footballer should be trying for their manager, their team mates, their personal pride and of course their supporters, I’m not sure most of them cared enough last night.

  10. Can we look at clubs like Molde and what they are doing right ? Can’t imagine they have a CEO on a huge stipend. They seem to be able to knit a team together on a much less budget and find players that can pass and control a ball and find space ( sorry but if a revolutionary concept there)

Guys like Tierney are the way forward – taking the Dundee utd guys looks on hindsight like a bad move. Our own guys will be better if given a decent chance.

I think in 1998 Real Madrid sacked jupp heynckes immediately after he won them the champions league, their first triumph in the big cup for about 30 years at that time.

I think heynckes might well have gone on to suffer the same fate at bayern Munich.

So maybe being rid rotten in the Europa league and CL qualifiers is on balance a sacking offence that can’t be redeemed by dominance over financially hamstring clubs in Scotland.

  14. Evening all.

Not read back , only the article and to honest I don’t give a Bombay about L5 , Ladbrokes or Jim Traynor.

My main concern is a proud football club becoming a PLC driven vehicle on the road to nowhere apart from a healthy balance sheet.

Our manager has failed when the opposition play’s football out with Scotland.

Our Chief executive makes a healthy bonus despite failure on the park.

Our Chief executive seems to have an unhealthy influence on the football department where rookie or an unknown fits the criteria as manager.

Our major shareholder lives in a parallel universe where he pines and misses the club who stiffed us and others for a decade.

My last and most concerning rant regards Kieran Tierney.

How many young players have left Celtic Park without being given a run of games rather than sign a project based on moneyball ?

    Level 5 ?? Who gives a toss ?

Everybody would like to get the transfer window business done early but it’s not always possible.

It’s the nature of the business and if you think a new CEO would change that, I strongly disagree.

Transfer business involved many interested parties who aren’t interested in Celtic’s preparation.

Heynckes retired when he won the last CL.

  17. HT

I don’t think for one minute the players stopped trying for Deila. The spirit within the camp is evidently very good. Various responses to previous bad results have been excellent. Of all of the things that went wrong last night i don’t think that was the issue. Conceding the second goal seemed to suck the belief from the players, and the red card was the final nail. When you have a young fragile group, low in confidence and lacking in belief, with no leadership or strong characters on the pitch, allied to poor tactics, any setback can be a killer. That’s what it looked like to me.

It’s a sad reflection on our club that a team from Norway can be so much better than us.

*naw it’s a sad reflection on the nation. Where are Scotland now, our other club sides went out early doors in Europe. Last I looked Norway were in a play-off for Europe 2016 as are Sweden who play Denmark.

The country’s downfall started on November 23, 1988 when the Ayrshire rugby loving Harold Steptoe wormed his way intae our game.

  23. TTR

You make a fair analysis and could well be right. However, when do you ever hear of squads and managers having difficulties? You only need to look at Chelsea at the moment.

I do know for certain that there were issues last season at a time when anyone connected with the team was saying everything in the garden was rosy. Thankfully that was sorted to the extent that we went on to secure a domestic double.

  24. How do we get more of our income set aside for players?

We need to reduce costs. Physically reduce stadium capacity, rather than just have empty seats? Enforce an even stricter wage structure, closer to some of the leagues we’re failing to compete against?

    We need to do something?

  25. Hebcelt

I still have hope, it’s what we do as Tims. However, realistically and based on Ronny’s European record, the chances are slim.

    You going to Dingwall?

  26. the glorious balance sheet on

    TimAloy29

I accept there’s many variables involved in the completion of transfer business but we need to understand our position is almost unique in football in that league success is almost a given so our season’s pivotal point is August and European qualifiers, not March to May.

So that means getting the business done either the summer before or in January. Last season was an excellent opportunity to do that, new manager given a free pass by most fans if he didn’t make the CL group stages. A conscious decision should have been taken in July 2014 that we prepare at that point for August 2015. Play the long game like any well run business with a coherent strategy.

But what did we do? Gorged on cheapos and last minute panic buys, 5 loanees in, a panic signing bought for 6 times what he had moved for 6 months previously, he’s out on Loan now just like bangura and balde before him and even beyond January 2015 we limped on with a central defence we knew would need replaced by August 2015.

The CEO is responsible for forward planning. Celtic have not planned at all well for this season and results like last night are a consequence of that.

So I do think, while not magically solving all our ills, a new CEO would bring in fresh thinking to avoid the same failures to prepare and mistakes being made.

If players put a Celtic jersey on they should be giving100% ,whoever is manager. If your thoughts are correct, and I for one think they are, they should be weeded out.Have you any inside information?

  29. Timaloy29 – Yes I agree that Lawwell and the board appoint the manager, and and in my opinion they have got it wrong with Ronny – it was a bold move, but it is not working.

However the Board have been resposible for O’Neil, Strachan and Lennon – no one gets it all right, all the time – witness 80% of clubs in the EPL and Championship.

Playing in Scotland is almost like training for European competition – if the training is of poor quality, it will eventually show up in performance – this is what has been happening in recent years.
