Lustig, love and money

383

I think we all like Mikael Lustig.  This week the defender spoke to the Norwegian media, expressing frustration at the lack of clarity surrounding his future.  Celtic have an option to retain him next season, but in January brought in a hoped-for loan replacement, Jeremy Toljan.

Toljan did not work out but the club are clearly still looking for a new right back.  I am not sure when Celtic’s option expires, but If they get a satisfactory replacement, Mikael will be allowed to leave, if not, he will stay.

This is the football business.  It is harsh, even more so for young players released before they make a significant living from the game, of for those from an earlier generation, who achieved greatness and found themselves without money or a trade in their 30s.

Players will often talk about their “love” for a club, but that love is invariably wrapped up in a lucrative contract.  The love becomes a fondness if offered a wage that would be regarded as spectacular to most fans.

I really like Mikael and I know we need cover for every position, but even the good guys sometimes have to wait under the terms of their contract for a decision, and they all need to move on one day.

  1. …so now would seem like a good opportunity to really, really focus on a motivating message that can be digested by all / more Scottish football clubs.

Sure, we should win some personal arguments but let’s not forget to win the war.

What I’ve read from French Football Journalists is more nuanced.

Physically immense. Form was up and down this season. They believe that his failed EPL move affected him mentally at the start of the season. Has been known to have lapses in concentration.

Sounds an awful lot like Boyata!

For example Jeremy Smith said “Really solid defender on his day. Hasn’t had the best season but his heart hasn’t seemed in it at Toulouse in the last year”

So his character is a worry. Not his quality.

‪Just been on Sevco media site to have a Ganda about what are saying re Res12. Half the posters are saying it’s to deflect from child abuse inquiries and the SFA are Celtics puppet. You couldn’t make it up. The levels of stupidity are frankly astounding, from the usual ‘ we were demoted’ to the ‘when we used EBTs, they were legal’. ‬

‪The really worrying thing about their stupidity is they actually believe all that rubbish. ‬

‪Is there a more vile, hateful ill informed and stupid fan base anywhere in Europe?‬

The messages they peddle are acceptable and easily digestible by yer average hun. Packaged korrectly some of their guff becomes accepted as…… FACT.

Res12 deflecting from child abuse was to be expected.

Of course had Celtic acted in 2013 or SFA in 2015 or UEFA in 2016 when prompted that idea would never have arisen.

Of course the cororally applies, did they start jumping on Child Abuse bandwagon knowing Res12 was in play?

Common factor is Mark Daly on the Men Who Sold the Jerseys and also the guy who gave prominence to the child abuse at CBC.

Probably just a coincidence although he agreed a wee while ago the UEFA 2011 licence was a story but not one he was going to pursue as he was working on another big story. He said he would pass to his sports editors.

Coincidence probably as investigating is his job but maybe the kind of thing DD might be interested in given MD’s interest in DDs business affairs…….

One for Auldheid please if he is still around – supposing the SFA decide that rangers did in fact breach their rules and regulations back in 2011, and then say they fine sevco £10,000 for the offence. If sevco pay the fine will they then be able to claim this proves they are in fact the real rangers and not sevco?

My final offering to wrap this up ( ok maybe one more round ya bassa ) as a busy weekend approaches .

Fathers day travels , plus im only on season 7 of this GoT which is fun but just like Stevie G winter is coming apparently. I have heard a few rumours about wee khaleesi and Sansa being fond of those Irish boys but thats neither here nor there right now.

“It is, indeed, and that shows up the closed reasoning and double standards involved. If we lose fans it’s definitely because we are dissatisfied/angry but, if we retain or increase them, it is not a sign of popularity.”

I claimed that not all who buy tickets are happy and have people who backed up that claim. Thats all Im saying , no more no less. We literally have straight from the horses mouth confirmation of this ( FAIRHILL ). Bringing the top tiers into this will only muddy the waters but the fact is my statement is true.

Both of us should admit there are many factors why a person may or may not attend .

If it seems to be double standards involved on my behalf with my answer all I can say is my statement in isolation is factually correct.

A person can vote for a party but not be totally happy with that party yet see it as the best option for them. Your logic there would say you voted us so youre happy with us.

Many Labour voters will be unhappy about Brexit handling for instance.

I dont think buying a ticket equals happiness at the product , thats all I am saying and I feel thats very true and some verified that. If that makes something else look hypocritical then thats besides the fact imo.

“ I asked if you knew what I had done and then confirmed that you believe I continued supporting as normal. That belief is in error.”

Please forgive me and yes I see the error in that thinking . I know you attend and have an ST currently and assumed ( maybe mistakenly ) that you continued to purchase and attend during the scandal.

I walked. Been in the states since 04 btw. How much I gave up might be subjective . Hundreds of bucks per annum plus the priceless emotional attachment. I honestly cant remember the last time I wore the Hoops . Dont own any Hoops tops anymore . Posted all the strips bar a select few that are treasured mementoes of departed family to Cowiebhoys daughter for her Africa trip. The bond was broken big time and it remains to be seen whether it ever returns. The way I see it , their loss.

“ I do not identify Celtic FC or plc as the main culprit in this situation.”

They arent as so far as the cheating goes but thats not my issue.

I have mentioned this many times but its a core belief of myself , my mates ,family and the area I was raised in that you stand up for yourself and yours and if attacked you hit back with everything you have as a bully wont stop until confronted and confronted soo strongly he realises he made a mistake.

We as a club might not see proper justice over der Huns malarkey but if my club had stood up and at least tried then I would embrace that and be happy to be a part of that family.

“ At least I tried “ is fine by me.

I am disgusted at what we have been subjected to and none of my circle would ever be treated like crap and not do something about it ( and I dont see winning trophies as standing up for yourself or getting even or anything even remotely like it )

If we do see justice I wonder would Auldheid give the club any credit for attaining it?

    If not heads should roll.

Pessimism,, I reckon its only there as a result of being a poor team thats the best of a bad bunch tbh. I certainly was optimistic when we had good managers leading the footie department.

Supporter angst in my mind is directly linked to the relative strength of the team.

I see your statement as confirmation we arent very good and may get caught.

We should ask why after 8 years we dont have a very good squad with many no where near our class. That should never happen again and whatever changes need made to ensure that should be a priority imo .

    Why our fans never revolted?

This blog was very popular back then and it had a big say in who what when where why as far as action and targets go. However I feel that it was lead by the boardroom to travel the path they wanted travelled.

In hindsight I think a huge mistake was made there and I am now convinced that the Celtic blogs must be independent, totally independent from the board , so they can choose their own actions regardless of whether that impacts the board negatively .

I mean if Cqn called for a boycott,,gathered the pensmiths and went on a sustained campaign to clean up the game for the good of the cause by withholding until we get proper results then right now I imagine things would look very different in a positive way. The fact we can band together would not be lost on some either.

The blogs were mislead and played imo and as such a couple of us started our own and will keep it free of any influence but the average fan hopefully.

    Take it easy bro

    Hail Hail

  16. We absolutely must sign young Turnbull and Joe Aribo now. Over on Follow x2, they have a 13 page thread running on Turnbull. Most of them are giving the boy credit where it is due and recognising his talent, having scored so many goals from midfield in only 30 games. Many wishing that they could afford him. The usual Troggs amongst them making negative comments that they have the better player in Hastie and only paid a development fee. Many others are saying that if Turnbull comes to us it must be an indicator that we are not pursuing Aribo/Aribo has knocked us back and it must mean that he’s going to them. I would love it, just love it (in a Kevin Keegan accent) if we signed Aribo as well. I see Charlton offered him to us the other day. Follow, Follow would implode if we signed both. ?

Slow news day indeed so wouldn’t it be nice to talk about Celtic and our players today. So, here goes (body armour on)

Whilst in my eyes, a decade does not end until the end of year 10 or 20 etc. we will soon reach the end of this decade in most people’s eyes at the end of 2019.

So, who comprises my Celtic team of the decade? It’s actually quite difficult as so many of our best players were only with us a short time but my criteria is based on each player at his peak rather than length of service.

    Goalkeeper: Fraser Forster

Defenders: Mikael Lustig, Virgil van Dijk, Jason Denayer and Kieran Tierney

Midfielders: James Forrest, Scott Brown, Victor Wanyama and Callum McGregor

    Strikers: Leigh Griffiths, Moussa Dembele

Looking back over the players of this decade is interesting:

Goalkeepers – not that many in numbers but include Boruc (for season 2010) as well as Gordon and Bain, all of whom compare well with my experience in the 50 years prior. However, not one home produced goalkeeper has made the grade.

Defenders – honourable mentions to Hinkel, Mulgrew, Matthews, Wilson, Emilio, Simunovic, Benkovic, McManus and Boyata. Kristoffer Ajer could be the man of the next decade and maybe Ralston will cement his place in the team. What strikes me is how few central defenders we have produced for ourselves.

Midfielders – Ki, Rogic, Bitton, Armstrong, Ledley, Kayall, Samaras, Ntcham, McCourt, Roberts , Robson, Commons, Johansen, Sinclair, Christie are worth a mention and Ewan Henderson and Karamoke Dembele may make an impact soon. Otherwise, not much to inspire. The odds are against many home grown players making it with us, but maybe, in time the new crop of young players such as Miller and Johnston may make it and we can develop Turnbull (if he signs) and Morgan into top team players.

Forwards – only Garry Hooper and Odsonne Edouard get favourable mentions. Others – Oh Dear. Celtic, for me, is so much about our great forwards but not very many this decade. We certainly disproved the theory that buying in bulk gets a better deal.

Anyway, that’s my take – plenty of room for challenge.

  19. HRVATSKI JIM –

Great post that got me thinking along siimilar but completely different lines. What about thos players from the past decade who, when everything clicked, just oozed such joy and exhuberance that they left everone in the stands with a smile on their face. The players who, when we picture them now, invariably it’s celebrating a goal or thunderous tackle and grinning from ear to ear. Even if it only happened 2 or 3 times!!

Using the same formation as you, here are my Happy Bhoys from the last 10 years…and managed by Ronny ;-)

I find myself mulling over the squad again.

    GK- Bain & Gordon

    RB- Ralston Perez

    LB- Tierney Hayes Gutmann

    CB- Ajer Simunovic Hendry

    DM- Brown Bitton Mulumbu Kouassi

    CM- McGregor Ntcham

    AM- Christie Turnbull Rogic

    RM- Forrest, Arzani, Shved

    LM- Sinclair Morgan Johnson

    Strikers- Edouard Griffiths Bayo

From the squad above I expect we’ll lose Hendry and Kouassi on loan. Mulumbu might leave & Ntcham will be sold. Personally I would also try to sell Rogic and loan out Johnson and Morgan as well.

Bayo, Perez and Gutmann are unknown quantities so it looks like we need.

    1st choice right back.

    2x Centre backs

At least one CM (Aribo or Harper?)

    Another number 10?

A proper old fashioned centre forward given Edouard isn’t really a centre forward, Griffiths is a question mark and Bayo is unknown.

    So 6 first team players?

  22. BBC TV evening news…………………… Greg Stewart signs for Rainjuuuurrrrrrzzzzzzz. ( 29 year old uncapped

    (2) Sevco FC do not ‘buy’ or ‘sign’ players. They ‘swoop’ for players. The extraordinary nature of these swoops must be emphasised at all times by preceding the word “swoop” with at least one of the following choices – ‘sensational’ ‘stunning’ ‘exciting’ ‘audacious’ or ‘ambitious’.
