I’ve been told to give the laptop back to my Mrs, so I’ll try to pop in after, so thank you all very much for the warm welcome. Hail, Hail.

  3. HUN is great wine in a can. Our Sauvignon Blanc, Pale Rosé and low calorie Rosé Bubbles are all from Stellenbosch, South Africa. We ditched the bottles and popped our wine into a recyclable can ‘cos we’re all about that eco life. Did we mention we are the first fair trade canned wine, and Vegan too! Say hello to HUN!

  5. Harking back to the Terry McGuiness post.

I want us to lead from pillar to post this year.

After round 1, I want us to be ahead even if it is just by goal difference & hope we keep our foot on their throat until the Trophy is won.

I think they are better then a lot here care to admit, also the closed doors/ reduced attendances scenario creates a bit of an unknown dynamic,

Which team will adapt better to the new atmosphere and will the MIBS be encouraged to cheat, now they don’t have thousands roaring at them. Will the pressure of trying to create history affect us,

I firmly believe we have the better squad and I most certainly expect us to win the 10 in a row but it won;t just fall into our lap.

There is a battle looming and it starts with the Accies,

  6. Pre-Season Myths:-

I have been reading CQN for a long time and I don’t think we are quick learners in this area.

Here are what I think are the main fallacies, in Q & A format, that persist:-

    Q. Why do we not have our new players bought and bedded in so they are ready for competitive games, esp. Europe.

A Because we are tryimg to get the best (best fit) players we can and some of them will want to see who else is in for them before they commit. So we have to do some transfer business late in the window. The alternative is just buying players that nobody else is in for or paying over the odds to pretend we are bigger than we are.

    Q. Why does the manager not play his first 11 against the bigger teams in pre-season warm ups

    A. Lots of reasons- some of them are carrying niggling injuries and could do with missing the game. We are trying to assess new players and development players from the reserves so it does not do their confidence or squad morale any good to have a them and us (picks and stiffs) attitude within the squad. To fully see the potential of a new player like Soro or a development player like Karamoko, you need to see them with a core of first teamers around and not just playing with another version of the reserves. So the squad gets mixed usually but gets nearer to the Manager’s Choice 11, the further on we go in the warm-up process.

This season is a bit accelerated because of COVID restrictions and the small number of warm ups we have; we would usually start with a few games agaisnt teams easier than Nice or Lyon or PSG.

    Q. Are we not insulting the paying customer with our atttitudes in these friendlies?

    A. The Celtic travelling support knows, by now, what it is getting in pre-season. We get a glimpse of new players and this year’s squad as they play friendlies, whilst doing heavy pre-season training. They know they are watching a heavy legged version of the team where fitness rather than results is the primary aim. It is disappointing for our foreign-based fans who are eager to see Celtic play well in front of their countrymen but our managers have to see the bigger picture and note that our priority is to prepare for an early Euro campaign and a decent start to the league.

    Q. But its known that Celtic don’t do friendlies so we get invites because we take it seriously?

    A. There was a time when we desperately wanted to beat teams (English teams) particularly as we thought it made us more relevant. It was part of our Scottish Cringe. We thought they’d respect us more if we beat their top teams; the truth is it made no difference to the underlying attitudes. The truth is they wanted us for our huge travelling support to swell the coffers for one of their player’s testimonials. Regardless of whether we beat them or lost to them, Scottish football has been looked down upon, even in the 60s and 70s when we regularly beat them. It’a lose:lose situation- bet the English team and they dismiss it as just a fiendly result; lose to them and it is “typically weak Scotch footballers”. T’was always thus.

    Q. But, look at the damage to morale from losing pre-season games! Our defenders will become scared of every attacker and the midfield will become safety first to avoid losing the ball and the attackers wil never take chances in case they are criticised for misses.

    A. The professional footballer knows what these games are about and know they are playing to gain match fitness for competitive games ahead. They can compartmentalise and excuse disapponting results if they know the game has helped them improve towards the real aim. I am sure Eddy and Olivier were more upset than most by being on a losing side but, in effect, if this was a true competitive match, we would bite your arms off for a 1:1 and a 1:2 away on French soil in a 2 leg tie.

    Q. Sevco have gained a morale advantage in winning this tourney where we gained 1 point only. We might suffer for that.

    A. We might, we might not and it might make absolutely no difference. There is absolutely no correlation between our pre-saeson success/failure ratio and our subsequent performance in the league (just as there is no relationship between England’s Group Qualifying form and their performance in the subsequent WC or Euro finals). DOes anyone remember a brilliant winning pre-season in our Sevile season? Let me remind you-

    Shelbourne (a) 4:1

    Shamrock Rovers (a) 1:1

    Portsmouth (a) 3:2

    QPR (a) 7:3

    Liennitz (a) 3:1

    Werder Bremen (n) 2:6

    Ajax (h) 1:3

    Parma (h) 2:1

    St. Mirren (a) 3:0

This strenuous three and a half week’s preparation saw us narrowly beat Dunfermline 2:1 at home on the opening league day and saw us knocked out of the CL by Basel in August on away goals. And though we had a wonderful UEFA run , we lost the league to Rangers on the final day, the LC to Rangers 2:1 (Hartson missd pen) and had a 5th round SC knockout by ICT.

Anybody remember the glory of beating Liverpool (NFL vs Rodgers incidentally) in the Aviva riurnament in Dublin 2013? That prepared us for a narrow win over Elfsborg (1:0 on agg) and Karagandy (3:2) before finishing 4th in the CL and losing 6:1 to Barca. Amidst that, we were knocked out of the league Cup by Morton at CP by 0:1in September.Fat lot of good that wee pre-season triumph did us. We even returned form a January Turkish tournament that season undefeated to Trabzonspor and Galatasaray before getting knocked out of the SC in February by Aberdeen at CP.

We did land the league though and , as then, so it is now. That is all that matters to us for next season. We will forget that we even were in France.

  10. The scoreline in our pre season friendlies doesn’t concern me.

However, I am rather perplexed in our approach, our strategy.

We give run outs to fringe players then never see them again. We sign players then they disappear into the stiffs for a season.

I’ve read of players going out on loan, having forgotten we had signed them.

I posed a question the other day. Didn’t intend it to be loaded or accusatory.

Since we demolished sevco 5-1 in 2017, which if the 2 teams have improved the most?

We dont do pre seasons well.

Not the results in France. The squad. The widening chasm between first 14 of the squad and the rest. Our average signing policy. By that, I mean a signing straight into the first team.

I pray to God we get all the component parts working together this season and can celebrate 10IAR under normal circumstances.

    I guess I’m a worrier.

  11. Yes, we must not pay too much attention to pre season friendlies.

However, losing is a bad habit that we must not easily accept.

Winning builds confidence and morale is much improved.

Since the 5-1 game in 2017 what time has collected every domestic trophy up for grabs ?

Also what time is spending what it can afford and accountable ?

By the way worrying isn’t a bad thing as it keeps us all on our toes … our nearest challengers are flinging everything possible at us and so far we are fending they off… have they improved, yes, have we improved ? I also think that’s a definite yes … try and not worry too much and enjoy what we have …. but I totally get your point as well :-)

  13. Uncle Jimmy

We rarely get to hear the reasons why players like Shved and Kouassi disappear into the stiffs and I am not sure that it would be to our benefit to know this ( I recognise that we are hearing all about the reasons re Leigh Griffiths but I take that as a hopeful sign that Lenny thinks he can and will be “saved” by this tactic.

If you have an expensively acquired asset like Shved or Kouassi, and they are not doing it at training, because their English is not good, their attitude is poor, or they are always moaning about injuries, you can come clean and tell the fans, but all that does is to put the fans against the work-shy players and let other clubs, including their previous clubs, think they can get them back more cheaply than they were sold. So, sometimes it is in the club’s interests to say nothing about this. After all you can only play 14 players in every game.

    In answer to your question:-

“Since we demolished sevco 5-1 in 2017, which if the 2 teams have improved the most?”

Most Celts would honestly answer that they have , but that they had more room to improve. We were an 8 out of 10 team and they were a 6.5 out of 10 team. We are still an 8 out of 10 team as last January and February showed whereas they are probaly a 7.0- 7.5 team now. That is close enough to cause an upset.

Anybody rating the respective Celtic and Ranger squads at the start of the 97/98 season would probably acknowledge rangers as having the strongest overall squad but we won that particular league, Thank Larsson!

It is too early in the transfer window for anyone to give a rating on how worried we should be about them, but, even if we have a better Transfer window than them, I reckon most fans, including myself, will remain worried because the stakes are so high. The best chance we have of converting those stakes into a winning bet is to be supportive supporters; it is the only influence we can have on the game.

Nobody gave us any of our previous 9 titles ; they all had to be won.

    And so does this one.

  14. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 19TH JULY 2020 12:49 PM

Pre-season friendly is a kick about, nothing games, no relevants to anything, no measure of anything and used as such, so we play a second string 11 against lyon who play a first choice 11, conversely lyon play second string against sevco, the pattern is clear.

We need a gk, and left-sided centreback. we could be doing with a left back but likely only if we can move boli on. May need a cover on the left if johnson is out longterm.

Would not be unhappy to see ralston, boli and shved as well as a few others fringe players move on and tbh ntcham is to good to be sitting on our bench so get him in the team or let him leave (if decent bid comes in)

  15. Interesting game last night especially seeing NFL’ s team 2 as unit, as opposed intermittent substitutions over the games the results were influenced by Neil’s obvious fitness and experimentation test. His squad on show in France are a credit and have kept themselves in tremendous condition, and both games so far bear no resemblance to annual sluggish hit and miss, pre season tours.

For flag day on August 1st, I don’t see a fusion of Neil’s sixty minute sides, more likely one or two promotees from the side that began pre season versus Nice, with more experimentation against, the even more formidable PSG.

El Hamed is a welcome sight in the Hoops and I hope he stays fit enough to retain the right back slot when the real things begin, with the transfer window now wide open, we shouldn’t hanging about especially on the goalkeeping slot, having allowed Craig Gordon to leave the door is gaping hopefully not for one or two of the names in the media.

El Hamed, Jullien, Ajer, Taylor looks a solid four the rest picks itself with some shuffling between Christie and El Younoussi on the left, and Klimala looks like he could weigh in with a contribution.

Don’t worry – we’ll be fine. I’d expect Lenny to put out a strong side

  17. Hamilton beat st Mirren in a pre-season Friendly and we drew and lost in our two games.

So, taking the the feel good factor and the corresonding feel bad factor into consideration, Accies must be hot favourites to beat us on the 2nd of August……unless. of course, the results in pre-season Friendlies are close to being irrelevant.

  18. SFTB

And though we had a wonderful UEFA run , we lost the league to Rangers on the final day, the LC to Rangers 2:1 (Hartson missd pen) and had a 5th round SC knockout by ICT.

The good goal Hartson scored in the League Cup Final only to be ruled off-side still rankles. So too did the hugely different attitudes of Kilmarnock and Dunfermline to their final games.

  21. Brendan was brilliant for us … his departure was poor (in my opinion) if he finished the season all would have been fine …. the second season narrative down in the EPL could put him under a bit of pressure … from being a title contender pre-Christmas and miles clear of the likes of Chelsea, Man U & Wolves … to now … struggling for 4th

Talk about making a statement. The winger was left licking his wounds after being left out of Rangers’ Europa League squad but answered the best possible manner with a deadly double against the French side. But his stirring display offered so much more than just his deadly finishes. The Portuguese winger was non-stop from the first whistle and his determination to win the ball high up the pitch set the tone.

Rangers’ eight new signings will be judged on their ability to help bridge the gap with Celtic but it would be a major shock if Aribo isn’t among the best new buys of the season. The midfielder glides around the pitch and has a classy touch to match. Rangers’ lack of guile in the final third was much publicised last term but the former Charlton brings a touch of class that could make a huge difference this season.

Edmundson and new boy Helander will be desperate to stake their claim at Ibrox but the tried and tested partnership certainly looks the part. And it’s to do with their attacking intent as much as anything. The duo had very little to do as a pairing in a defensive capacity but were wreaking havoc every time they were in the opposition’s box. Katic is aggressive in the air and wins nearly header that comes his way. Goldson is also nifty with his noggin but has also discovered a knack of becoming the ultimate goal-poacher. And that new found skill was in display when he nabbed the third goal from his team-mate as he prowled inside the six-yard box. Plenty for Gerrard to ponder.
