Magic from Madrid, share scams in 2012

1894

Atletico Madrid, happy for them?  Not an easy one.  I remember listening to the radio commentary the night we lost to them in the European Cup semi-final of 1974.  They, and Rapid Vienna a decade later, represented very unworthy competitors in European competition.

Both teams returned to Celtic Park in recent seasons.  Rapid picked up pretty much where we left them, an odious lot, but Atletico and their fans didn’t seem to bother about the past, they came and left wanting to play football.

As a boy I remember chastising old soldiers who fought the Germans during the war for their persistent aversion to modern Germans and Germany.  “They are a new people, nothing to do with the 30s and 40s”, I said.

It feels a bit ridiculous holding a grudge against Atletico.  Their achievement last night, and this season so far, has been fantastic.  Against the most powerful foes, they might just win the hardest league in the world and the Champions League.  This late in the season, that is a stunning prospect to still be on the table. They should be an inspiration to us all.

I see the media is (responsibly) alerting Celtic shareholders to the threat of a share scam apparently being perpetrated against unsuspecting fans by spivs and criminals.  Where were they in December 2012?

Rangers weren;t saved. It’s time to look forward for Scotland.

What can we achieve independent? It’s up to everyone to make their own choice. It’s not a group vote.

Back when i read the DR , I remember the back page with wee Jinky, sitting OOR Wullie like on a bench with his socks down, and there wasn’t a part of his legs that didn’t have a bruise.

I watched that game from the wall at the front of the jungle that night, and was amazed that the wee man just kept getting up and going at them again.

It was an act of great courage , and along with his tremendous skill, it was the reason so many of us loved him.

Back then AM were a decent team, but acted like bunch of thugs, However, I was rooting for them last night.

For me the lustre has rubbed off of Barca, their overspend, along with RM and Chelsea, is obscene, so if they go on to win the double then I’ll be quite pleased.

I seem to have it in my head that both us and the died club played European football in Glasgow on the same night ? with it later being moved to a Tuesday/Wednesday format. Can any of the old timers confirm if this is correct ?

I agree completely. That’s why I’m trying to say we should not vote Yes as a group because Orangemen are voting No. People should vote Yes or No for the right reasons, not based on silly tribal followings.

If you read back on my posts that exactly my point.

  5. 1974 was a long time ago. I was in the Jungle on that fateful night and witnessed the most disgraceful display ever.

The current Atletico M coach, Diego Simeone, has, incidentally, both played for and coached Racing Club in his native Argentina.

This year’s CL final could be à repeat of the 1974 one. Similar result?

Spanish football with its spiralling debts and whiff of corruption leaves me cold. Due to the underdog nature of AM, compared to the big two, normally I’d favour them but there’s a bad bit in me. I remember their ‘offensive’ banner to Billy McNeill in the Europa league a few seasons back after he’d been in the press reliving their antics in’74.

    Just Celtic for me.

I had a hatred of Rapid Vienna up until a couple of years ago when I was visiting Austria.

My host arranged for us to go to a Rapid league game. It was an all ticket game tickets but after a phonecall it was arranged for us to meet some Rapid supporters in the pub next to the stadium. They were builders with other family member enjoying a few pre-match beers. We were asking about our tickets but they just winked and smiled. Around kick-off time we strolled over to the stadium and the main guy said something to the turnstile operator and we were le in. They had good seats at the back of the stand opposite the halfway line. There were no spare seats for us but they gave us theirs and they stood at the back for the whole match. It was a generous act and they were just mad football fans like you get anywhere. The game was a draw and my host (not a football fan) said “good game ,a fair result”. The Rapid guy retorted ” f—-off ,you know nothing ,this is our religion ,it was a terrible result”

Over-all its was an enjoyable experience with loads of pyro and ultras behind both goals .

    Sorry.

I neither know nor care what Salmond would have done about Rangers in an independent Scotland.

It is an irrelevance. He is an irrelevance to Scotland’s future. Rangers are DEAD.

Just decide whether or not you think Scotland will be better or worse on her own.

    Then VOTE.

    Simple.

    Good Luck.

  10. Billy bhoy where on earth did I say I hated people who want independence?

Brogan I don’t wish to answer all your points so please see my response to snake.

I completely disagree with you on the catholic vote angle. Catholics would become a tiny minority here and it’s not getting better. Just have a look at the OBi act.

  11. The polls show the gap narrowing and if the trend continues YES will win the day-hopefully.

  12. Would an independent Scottish Govt have stepped in to “save” Rangers? Oh aye, definitely. Better vote no in the referendum then.

I was 16 when I watched the AM debacle, convinced myself that UEFA wuld throw them out of the competition – which alas they did not. Took great delight in seeing them beaten in the replayed final though.

Nowadays I can sit back and admire the quality of their play without any connection to the previous fixtures. I was very annoyed that we had a closed door game against them due to the nonsense from Rapid Vienna as I was sure we would qualify, even more so after gaining a draw away.

However I must admit to great surprise in reading an article that stated Atletico Madrid have greater debts than both Barcelona & Real Madrid which might put things into perspective regarding the current side.

Still hoping for another Bayern victory & that Chelski get pumped oot ASAP.

  14. I was at the game in ’74 and am with the consensus on here…. Hope AM get their comeuppance.

    Over..and…Over

Negatives would include being unable to control interest rates, loss of jobs from UK companies who have already expressed their intention to relocate jobs, massive expense of duplicting every regulatory body in the UK, brain drain of young professionals who might need to move abroad, years of negociation with Westminister to thrash out a deal.

This would include a lot of the uncertanties too I suppose. Part of the problem is we don’t really know what we are voting for as so many of the details have still to be settled.

I believe after a very messy and expensive divorce we would be left a similar state of affairs with similar problems which blight Scotland and corrupt, incompetent politicians with slightly different accents from the corrupt, incompetent politicians at Westminister.

Do you see any negatives or uncertainties as a result of Independence or will everything be just grand?

    Thanks in advance.

  17. On the Monday night prior to the final in Seville, my brother (lymmbhoy) and I found ourselves in a hotel bar in Madrid partaking of the chilled refreshments as we contemplated the long drive the next day to Seville. The locals were intrigued by the presence of the hoops in their city as a fair few flights that day had carried over the green and white army to the Spanish capital prior to ‘march’ to Andalusia.

I recall meeting a passionate AM supporter who extolled the virtues of his club and in particular his hatred of the establishment team RM-football really is a universal language. We reciprocated and my abiding memory of that bar-apart from lymmbhoy walking into a glass door-is the auld fella wishing us all the best and me forgiving him in part for ’74.

That’s a summary of a two hour conversation.

That’s what I intend to do. But I don’t need you to tell me that I should vote No because all Orangemen and all Rangers supporters are voting Yes (by the way, they aren’t).

  19. (Last night’s) Libertadores

    +++++++++++++++++++

    Bom dia,

Before I start today, I’d just like to say thank you to the Rio Cooncil and NET TV for absolutely fecking up the cable that supplies our neighbourhood. Thereby ensuring that Casa ‘skorrie, all my neighbours and all the surrounding wee bars had no TV last night! GGGRrrrrrrrr!!!!!

Anyway, here’s a quick run by on how the games went.

    Group 7

    ———-

    Bolivar 2 Emelec 1

Bolivar secure top spot in this group. Emelec out.

With goals from the ever impressive William Ferrerya and Callejon Bolivar looked to be crusing in this one. Then Emelec pulled one back thru Argentinian, Escala to make the final 15minutes a very tense nervy affair.

With Strongest going thru the night before, this makes a momentous campaign for Bolivian football and the first time they have had two sides in the last sixteen since 2000.

Apart from the fact that Bolivar are a well organized side, the fact that they are in the winner’s pot (and play their second match at home) could them make wildcards in the next stage.

    Flamengo 2 v Léon 3

Surprise of the night. Léon grab the runner’s up spot, ‘mengo out.

A pulsating first half where Léon twice took the lead and were twice pegged back. However, ‘mengo’s injury gamble on Elano backfired badly when he broke down after only 10minutes on the pitch. The destabilizing effect this had on the team, plus that ever suspect central defence meant it was never going to be an easy night for ‘mengo.

Léon were a well drilled outfit and certainly dispelled the funeral smokescreen that manager Matosas had been putting out all week. MOTM (a man voted by Wigan fans as their worst striker ever) Mauro Boselli led the line superbly, scoring one and setting up the others.

    Group 2

    ———-

    San Lorenzo 3 Botafogo 0

San Lorenzo scrape thru on GD, fogo out

Although the score was 3-0, SL made heavy work of this against a Botafogo side who’s only tactic was to hoof the ball to lone striker, Ferrerya. Perhaps it was the constant ebb and flow of reaction from the fans listening to the Espanola/IDV match which affected them. Who can say? However, with two minutes remaining the score was 2-0 and SL were going out. Then MOTM striker Ignacio Piatti, popped up with a fine strike to seal a last sixteen place for the Papa’s favourite team.

Union Española 4 v Independente del Vale 5

Union go thru as group winners. IDV edged out by a single goal

The game of the tournament / year / decade depending on which paper you rtead about this game. They also make reference to the fact that IDV’s Daniel Angula notched four goals and was still on the losing side. Sound familiar?

I suppose it’s little consolation for Angula that he has now scored eight in this tournament and could still end up as the tournment’s top scorer.

    Group 5

    ———-

    Cruzeiro 3 v Real Garcilaso 0

Cruzeiro thru in runners up spot. Garcilaso already out.

Cruzeiro had two goals disallowed in the first five minutes and that, pretty much set the pattern for this match. Cruzeiro’s goals coming from Goulart, Rodrigo and Julio Baptista.

Probably the only surprising thing about this is that Cruzeiro don’t go thru’ as group winners.

    Defensor Sporting 1 v U de Chile 1

Defensor thru in top spot, La U go home.

Defensor looked strangely lethargic in this one and when La U took the lead, midway thru the first half it looked like they were heading out. However, a combination of a substitution of forwards and (yet again) a bit of Arrasceatta brilliance to provide the thru ball for sub striker, Alonso was enough to grab the precious point.

La U will be disappointed with this Libertadores campaign.

  20. My friends in Celtic,

Atletico Madrid : I can forgive but never forget. For a man of the stature ( Even at that time ) of Billy McNeil to publically label them scum tells its own story.

It was three reds going on eight, and the most annoying thing is that they proved in the 2nd leg that they could actually play football when they beat us 2-0.

Anyway time is indeed a healer and I now hope they actually win the Champions league.

Ref the Indy debate : It is entirely understandable that it features prominently in dialogue and debate on this blog. It is a monumental decision that will be made on the 18th of September that will impact on all our domestic and foreign affairs, including football and more specifically Celtic.

It cannot be ignored as some would wish.

    Thanks for the reply.

For me interest rates will take care of themselves. Loss of jobs, in my opinion scaremongering, sure there will be job losses but in my opinion again there will also be job gains. Why the need to duplicate every regulatory body? Brain drain of young professional moving abroad, probably no more than the amount that do now. Negotiations with Westminster shouldn’t be a problem.

Where you mention corrupt Politicians in Westminster, their is nothing we can do about that, however in an Independent Scotland we could vote them out.

As for negatives I do not see any. Uncertainties, sure their will be some, again though I see more positives in a Free Scotland, what I mean by Free Scotland is being allowed to govern ourselves and not to be dictated to by another country.

Life is a dance floor my friend, it all depends how you want to dance and I would love to dance in an Independent Scotland before I leave this Earth.

  22. My friends in Celtic,

Further to my last post : Hypothetical situations are no basis or solution to what we must vote on and in no way reflect reality, In my opinion.

Separation is not just for Christmas. It is forever and the facts must speak louder than sentiment. There is no going back.

    HH.

  23. Wee story from the strangely named Mansfield Chad. Check out the name of their next opponents. The game would be stopped by FOCUS in Scotland:-

    “Celtic stay on triple course

MNAC Bilsthorpe Celtic v Sutton St Josephs Celtic celebrate their win in the Mansfield Sunday League Premier Cup Final for the Kevin Rowan Trophy

It was the third year in a row they had won the Kevin Rowan Trophy.

Liam Black’s 30-yard half-volley gave them a 25th minute interval lead. When Gav King’s shot hit a post on 55 minutes,

Black followed up from six yards to make it 2-0 before King added a third 10 minutes later.

Sub Lucan Barker wrapped things up on 75 minutes from 10 yards.

This Sunday Celtic need just a point at Rifle Volunteer to take the league title and then contest the Stamper Cup final the weekend after as they try to complete another memorable treble.”

  24. I had a nice thought.

Between 2003 and 2009 inclusive, AC Milan (twice), Barca (twice), Porto, Man U and Liverpool all won the CL.

We beat them all in the group stages in that era.
