Magic from Madrid, share scams in 2012

1894

Atletico Madrid, happy for them?  Not an easy one.  I remember listening to the radio commentary the night we lost to them in the European Cup semi-final of 1974.  They, and Rapid Vienna a decade later, represented very unworthy competitors in European competition.

Both teams returned to Celtic Park in recent seasons.  Rapid picked up pretty much where we left them, an odious lot, but Atletico and their fans didn’t seem to bother about the past, they came and left wanting to play football.

As a boy I remember chastising old soldiers who fought the Germans during the war for their persistent aversion to modern Germans and Germany.  “They are a new people, nothing to do with the 30s and 40s”, I said.

It feels a bit ridiculous holding a grudge against Atletico.  Their achievement last night, and this season so far, has been fantastic.  Against the most powerful foes, they might just win the hardest league in the world and the Champions League.  This late in the season, that is a stunning prospect to still be on the table. They should be an inspiration to us all.

I see the media is (responsibly) alerting Celtic shareholders to the threat of a share scam apparently being perpetrated against unsuspecting fans by spivs and criminals.  Where were they in December 2012?

Yes, but no sale of Ibrox and Murray Park, simply a sign over to the holding company.

Beeb news just said King said the club was in danger of going bust AGAIN.

So, it WAS the club that went bust before? NOT the holding company?

Except, if it DID go bust, then it CAN’T go bust AGAIN. Because it’s a different club.

All getting highly confusing this stuff…..

Perhaps and yet we’ve also beaten or at worst competed with some of those clubs that we have no right to (on paper at least).

If it the plan was to maximise revenue for them, I’d suggest that us meeting them in a QF or SF would do it. I can’t verify it with figures but I wouldn’t be surprised if the marketing opportunities from that kind of tie alone would exceed the revenue they’d get by winning it without meeting us.

bsr – saw that on twitter this afternoon, but as Cup is an SFA competition, don’t think Sevco could do that under their own steam. And surely DU would complain – if they knew.

I could see sevco’s logic to narrow the pitch as DU have speed, especially wide, that would cause havoc with the pedestrian defenders.

Stoke used to do that for their long throws but had to reinstate width for European ties ( different minimum width requirement)

    Doc – thanks.

When three fire engines arrive at your home. You get out. I met firemen in oxygen masks in my building on the way out telling me that I am safe isn’t really reassuring. They’re packing up now. Now I feel safe.

  15. Rwe – glad you are enjoying the Seville book – it is special not because of the work we did on it but because of the many hundreds of Celtic fans who contributed in one way or another.

Indeed I was discussing this with a friend in the publishing business this week and he was saying that a big publishing house simply wouldn’t have the resources to go track down hundreds of supporters ten years after the match and get such wonderful stories together from all over the world. He marvelled at our achievement – although it is rather simple. It’s just being part of CQN.

Neganon has now submitted his article for the magazine – he is our alternative CEO – sparks flying next week!
