Maribor, St Johnstone and resolving Murrayfield

565

Did you watch the European Super Cup from Cardiff last night?  Europa League champions Sevilla lost out to Real Madrid but the team from Andalucía got there after beating Maribor 4-3 on aggregate.  The Slovenian’s narrow defeat deserves some context: Sevilla also eliminated Real Betis, Porto, Valencia and Benfica.

Make no mistake, we’re up against a decent European team.  More on them later in the week.

Tonight it’s St Johnstone, who, like Celtic, have sharpened their wits with European football in recent weeks, and well as enjoying an opening day win in Dingwall at the weekend.  They have lost their talisman, Stevie May, which is a pity, as I would like to see the Celtic defence stretched as much as possible this week, but they will be as ready as any domestic opponent we could face at the moment.

Ronny Deila has two short games to sort out game plan, shape, partnerships and team spirit, before travelling to Slovenia.  It doesn’t need to be right for tonight, but signs of considerable progress on the Murrayfield debacle is needed.

The Kano Foundation are one of the greatest initiatives from any group of football fans I’ve heard about.  They bring the Celtic experience to childrens’ charities and groups, truly phenomenal work.  The Foundation was founded in the wake of the Bring Martin Home campaign, which brought our very own Kano home from life in a hospital bed.

You’ll see the volunteers outside Celtic Park before kick-off on Saturday with buckets, so make sure you bring something for them.

    Referees fees –

If they relate their pay to average an SPL salary and/or attendance then I’d say they are well paid.

It would be interesting to see which countries they are comparing themselves too and the admission prices.

On another level how much are refs not declaring to HMRC? Even for a kids non-competitive match the fee is over £30 for 40-50mins. Some do several games.

So refs are well remunerated for their hobby.

Just a bug bear of mine.

    ————————————————————————-

Aye. Well, Mr. Dougal, in addition to suggesting that some benchmarking had gone on against similar leagues in Europe (thought he didn’t say which ones) then slipped in a supplementary argument. That some of the matches in the lower divisions were what he termed “high profile”. Assuming what he means by this is the “big” matches involving teams like Falkirk, Hibs and Dundee. Apparently they only get £110 or thereabouts for those games. So I’m guessing he would be happy if referee remuneration for the “big” matches was increased.

The bottom line is that what they get paid this year is in line with what they got last year – you get more for reffing a game in the top division. Which clubs are in the lower divisions should have no effect on remuneration. IMHO.

  7. Very likely that Police Scotland are the agency with concerns about a standing are at Celtic Park.

In their mind, they do not want to exacerbate a problem that they already have. Converting a seated to a standing area makes little sense to them particularly if it is sections 110 & 111. They spend more resources and lift more people in the GB section than the rest of the stadium combined – as they see it.

Celtic have spent 2 and a half years trying to get approval for this alteration to their Safety Certificate and on the day of the decision meeting, they have been advised that permission will be denied, and the matter thrown into the Black Hole of bureaucracy in Edinburgh. The refusal will be dressed up as something that the current stadium safety legislation does not allow for, and thus has to be referred to Edinburgh for clarification or confirmation etc. They could have made this assessment over 2 years ago.

There is obviously a significant communication gap between Celtic and the SAG, and particularly Police Scotland. The whole point of the SAG is that these matters are resolved before these meetings ever take place, because there is a coming together of minds on safety.

Every club has supporters who stand at matches in increasing numbers, particularly their travelling supporters.

The ‘Safety Advisory Group’ believe it is safer to have seats in front of standing supporters as opposed to rail seats to lean on?!

I’d like to see the justification for that.

As a supporter of big Peter I fail to see what upsets some Celtic fans our CEO works under the financial restrictions of a club operating in the SPL a paupers league. Now we are operating a system of bringing in players improving them and selling at a profit and currently the club is financialy secure.I accept when following this policy every player we sign is unlikely to be a success Balde Boerichter and Pukki but surely this is going to happen with some players and it could said the scouting dept.and our last manager are as responsible for the signing of these three players.Lennie left Celtic fairly suddenly and Peter brought in Rony and JC now these two are trying to make big changes to our club and this will take time which surely every new manager should be allowed. So in my opinion our CEO is doing a fine job and yes he earns a large annual income but obviously our board feel he is worth it.H.H.

    Hope you’re well.

There is no such thing as complete safety at any public event.

SAGs exist to make a series of risk assessments based on the advice of their standing delegates (loved typing that).

If absolute safety was the aim, then such events and Leeds, Reading, TinthePark and Glastonbury just would not be permitted at all.

As you know, the old barriers were meant for leaning on, but in many grounds acted as a protective barrier for some. Stood on the Kop at Anfield with my sons and Mrs RWE years ago, and an old guy told Mrs RWE to stand in front of the barrier and not lean on it, because he knew what the crush was going to be like.

Safety measures at any event are a trade off between known risks and spectator enjoyment.

I suspect that the issue at Celtic Park is more to do with Police concerns over their control of and access to sections 110 & 111, than purely safety matters in a general sense. The SAG and the Council feel trapped by this dilemma, which implies that they want to grant this variation to the Safety Certificate, but faced with stiff Police objections, have simply punted on 1st down.

The Celtic statement today is a welcome departure from their usual PR paralysis on important fan based issues. They have been listening to the fans and working to introduce the standing area.

The club are seeking clarification over who makes the decision after being told different things by local and Scottish governments.

A statement read: “Celtic Football Club is extremely disappointed and concerned that approval could not be given at today’s meeting of the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) to grant permission to install rail seating at Celtic Park, designed to allow safe standing by supporters.

“The club has provided substantial and detailed information in support of this proposal over the past two-and-a-half years and has made every effort to address comprehensively all issues raised by the SAG.

“Today’s decision has been made despite the club also providing the requested additional information from an independent stadium safety expert, Dr Steve Frosdick.

“Surprisingly, we have also today been informed by the Safety Advisory Group, chaired by Glasgow City Council, that this may be a matter for the Scottish Government, and yet we have previously been told by the Scottish Government that this is a decision which must be taken locally at council level.

“Spectator-safety at Celtic Park is of paramount importance and we believe the proposals we have made would significantly enhance safety at matches. This is a vitally important spectator-safety issue. It is also an opportunity for Glasgow and for Scottish football to lead the UK in this area.

“We do not understand the rationale for today’s decision and in an attempt to seek clarity on this matter, we have requested a full written explanation for the judgement made. Once this has been received we will be in a position to communicate further with our supporters.”

Top-flight clubs in Scotland relaxed their rules on safe standing in December 2011 but none have introduced official areas.
