Mark Lawwell first recommendation to Celtic

338

Ange Postecoglou, by his own words, worked closely with Mark Lawwell during his time at City Football Group’s Yokohama F. Marinos and had a big influence in the appointment of our new Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment.

The tie goes deeper, though.  It was Mark Lawwell, who a year ago, told his closest contact at Celtic about an Australian he knew that was working in Japan and who would be a far better appointment than Eddie Howe.

The then incoming chief exec was understandably cautious about taking this recommendation, preferring to wait for Howe, a known entity.  When that line of pursuit was no longer open, the club took Mark Lawwell’s recommendation.  It was a radical decision and a huge risk, made at a time when two chief execs were in the building, with differing views.

The relationship between manager, head of scouting and chief exec can make or break a club.  They flourish whenever all three are working in sync.  On that basis, I’m encouraged by where we are ahead of the summer transfer window.

Uefa’s news yesterday, that Russian clubs will not participate in European football next season, confirmed that the cinch Scottish Premiership champions will gain automatic entry to the Champions League group stage.  We will talk more about what this means financially to the club at the appropriate time.  What you can be sure of is that a budget spreadsheet at Celtic Park has been updated, the recruitment team has been assembled and there is a clear sense of ambition at the club.

If Mark Lawwell’s player recommendations are half as good as his managerial suggestion, we can look forward to an interesting season.

I am talking about Wee Eck level of engagement.

He is very quick to announce his luv for RB in very public settings.

To me that is code for his square bashing exploits.

Asked a few Celtic related questions yesterday and forgot to include that John ‘dixie’ Dean’s was our hat-trick scorer in the sunday game v Clydebank.

Enjoyed your analytical post (Villarreal Vs Liverpool) very much.

    Cheers.

I’d go slightly further inasmuch as I couldn’t initially identify which single midfielder was playing badly?

In that first half I thought each of Fabinho, Keira and Thiago were very poor.

Credit to Jürgen Klopp – all 3 were terrific second half.

One other key factor about trusting your plan is the fact that an opponent playing with the emotional intensity in the first half will ALWAYS drop off eventually, thus providing a more stable platform to execute your plan.

Respectfully, I think there is a message for all of us too in your post?

I occasionally find comments about Ange being too dogmatic or inflexible to be I’ll informed.

I see nothing wrong with the approach …

The TB / GB record regarding public spending / public sector investment is something you don’t seem to understand or you claim not to understand.

    97 – 99 = Smokey Joe’s numbers plus a few odds and ends extra.

99 – 08 = Huge levels of increased public spending / public sector investment.

09 – 10 = Saving the us and the world from a global economic meltdown caused by the US having nothing left to sell the world apart from its debt.

They ran out of the good stuff and so started to sell their shi*e.

And the rest they say was financial Armageddon.

But being a City bean counter you know that already.

Plus the UK’s banking sector binge on cheap / short term wholesale funding rather than paying proper interest rates to their customers. But again you know that but you are just keeping schtum.

What are the figures for the EuL group stages?

I’ve posted it before. On the performance of our 2019/2020 season it would be around £12m for group stages alone.

You’d have to take participation as a whole to get a true picture of course, games before and after the groups stages and the likelihood of progression to post-christmas participation from each competitions group.

  8. Nice new money for the ECL.

The next stage is to utilise that money in its entirety to build a team that won’t become the whipping bhoys of the tournament.

Fix the Euro team and the domestic work takes care of itself.

I’m not asking for winnign the tourney or comign first in the group but ‘competing’ and challenging teams. Better, braver, fitter and more technically gifted players please.

Oh and end the Nir Bitton as the early season Euro centre half ritual for once please Ange :)

Sorry your analysis is very weak.

CL Group stages = £30mill from EUFA.

EuL Group stages = £12mill from EUFA — is this correct?

And you would rather have EuL football than CL football?

Sorry that dog don’t hunt — in fact that dog is a vegetarian.

You would take the EuL because we would need to qualify — the support has to put their hand into their pocket to get us through to the EuL group stages …

And you think this is a positive over direct CL group stage access — strange.

  10. Yeh I know the difference with attending every Celtic game fans and the 11 fingered mess that you excuse.

  12. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 4TH MAY 2022 11:44 AM

I was probably heavily influenced by having a young Liverpool supporter in my house who was shouting at Klopp to substitute Keita after 25 minutes :). But I agree, they all were shocking. Thiago looked rattled, which was a big surprise given his experience and the crowd they were in front of, hardly the most intimidating atmosphere he’ll ever have played in.

I couldn’t get over the parallels between last night’s first half and the second half on Sunday. Fatigue definitely played a big part for Villarreal, and a couple of their players were carrying injuries that slowed them down, but it didnt take much for Liverpool to turn the game on its head.

We’re going to face similar against them in every game from now on, whether we can work out our own way of beating them when they play like that will go a long way to deciding the title next season.

You asked for the numbers for group stage football for both tournaments and I gave them, not for participation in the whole tournament. It would be a different number

I’m trying to explain, using Uefa’s numbers that the difference between CL and Europa League participation isn’t as great as has been as people think. Knowing it helps with the anxiety that surrounds qualification for the CL and the mythical tens of millions. It does for me, anyway.

I prefer the money from CL football, I prefer the competition in the Europa League. I don’t think its beyond us to emulate what a team who are six points behind us in the league have done in this years competition. I don’t think we’ll make it out of the groups in the CL, which means 6 games in Europe, all of which will be against better teams than us

That’s isn’t to say he wouldn’t have found a way round it, I think he would have.

  18. MADMITCH

I also think the smaller difference in income shows the stupidity of the Huns in gambling on CL money.

I can understand that for a club with serious liquidity issues the promise of guaranteed free cash in your forecast is very attractive, but when the differences are much less significant the existential threat isn’t worth the gamble.

    Its scrambled thinking – hubris

  19. C40 @ 12.22

    CL = £30mill

    EuL = £12mill.

That is a huge difference in the money going to the club.

£18mill is a very big number.

    Worth aiming for.

*and I fully concurred with you Brian, my late da’s first wife, who sadly passed away in childbirth, was a presbie and Sunday School teacher, her grampa was the WM and held the chair at his local ludge

My da was first generation Scottish and grew up saying the Holy Rosary on his knees every night on the living room floor, he was no bigot, never heard him sing a rebel song or wear green.

It was me that brought the rebel songs intae the house, he didnae dissuade me though, although on the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rebellion we both sat watching a show with Dominic Behan among the cast on the BBC celebrating it.

He did comment at one time when hearing Skibbereen so he knew the songs, one day though he told me that I didnae have tae sing a rebel song or war green tae support the Celtic, did buy me my first scarf though.

My mother, 2nd generation Scottish, her family were avid socialists and some members of her da’s family even went completely red, nae chance the stench of bigotry ever being aired in our house

I am well aware of the early days of the craft, one of the mother country’s finest sons, the Liberator Daniel O’Connell, he of the Catholic Emancipation was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 189 in Dublin, and was initiated in 1799.

As for the Catholics schools in Dumbartonshire no getting taught burns, might have been something tae dae with his lifestyle than being a breest barer.

“£18mill is a very big number.”

Glad to be of service. Let me know anytime you need to do the hard work for you again.

  23. C40 @ 12.39

It is an apples for apples difference.

Group stage participation. — CL is £30mill while the EuL is — you claim — £12mill.

That is a huge difference — £18mill — and worth fighting for.

You would seem to have us in the qualifying rounds for the EuL — strange viewpoint.

That is asking the support for even more money to get a second prize — not good.

Consequently your TFOD2.1 luv for their Cooks Tour of Europe is for something we do not need to do and we haven’t done in 18/19 years — so that dog certainly don’t hunt.

RE that semi final in 1966 against Liverpool.

The final would be at Hampden and Celtic had won the first leg 1-0.

Bobby Lennox scored a perfectly good goal in the closing minutes to clinch our place in the final.

I was behind the goal that night amongst a packed Celtic support which took the offside decision badly. Bottles rained from every direction and the game was stopped. Jock Stein came behind the goal to try and calm matters but even one of our club banner poles was thrown onto the pitch- via the crossbar.

None of this was aimed at Liverpool fans but borne out of huge frustrations with the officials.

I believe post match but much later the referee admitted getting that one wrong.

Maybe ,in the end, he did us a favour because Lisbon followed soon after.
