McAllister shows how far aspirations have fallen

330

Newco assistant, Gary McAllister, this week told the media “to finish the season with a flourish would be a big positive going into the summer.”  On hearing this, I thought back to the 3-0 win in a meaningless game against Rangers in May 1995.  We left Hampden (our temporary home) with a child-like joy: we had a great day out but the ‘adults’ knew nothing of significant had occurred.

It is demeaning for an aspirational club to talk about the prospect of feeling positive at winning a meaningless fixture.  Especially when they cannot even reach a cup final.  To the outsider, this looks the opposite of aspirational.  It looks needy and desperate.

Of considerably greater importance to Celtic in May 1995 was the Scottish Cup Final win over that other soon-to-be-liquidated team, Airdrie.  We brought a trophy home for the first time in six years, in actual positive.

Win, lose or draw on Sunday, anyone who leaves Ibrox feeling positive or negative about the summer on the back of what happened that day is a fool.  Gary, it’s not a good look.

Hail Hail to you all – Long time no see. Just popped in to say full strength team on Sunday. Lets pump the hordes at Ipox and rub it right in. Another beach ball type celebration to boot.

  2. I’ve been thinking about our team selection all week to be fair. And I’ve chopped and changed my mind a good few times :

I believe Lennon will play : Bain, Lustig Jozo Ajer Tierney , Brown N McGregor, Hayes wide left, Rogic No.10 and Forrest wide right. Edouard up top

However I’d like to see :

    ———————–Bain———————–

    M.Lustig Jozo K.Ajer K.Tierney

    ———Broony McGregor————

    O.Burke Rogic J.Forrest

    ————-Edouard—————–

  3. I’ve been thinking bout our options wide left… we’ve seen Hayes, Sinclair, and Weah all in equal measure in recent games. None of them has really stood out.

I did notice vs Aberdeen last weekend, that James Forrest swapped wings, and caused the Aberdeen right back no end of problems. Being right footed, he can seek link up with Edouard, and drift in-field. Hopefully getting a number of efforts off on goal.

On the right wing. Burke has had his critics. Maybe rightly so. But 2 things he has in abundance, is pace and work-rate. Both will be needed down the right hand side. I think his pace and work-rate will be a good aid to Lustig , in snuffing out Kent.

Sevco don’t have a recognised left-back, therefore would give Burke the opportunity to put his pace to good use down that side.

    Thoughts ?

  6. Here is a scenario that would seem incredible had something similar not happened before.

“Rangers” go for broke to stop 10iar, either next season or one after.

Celtic know this and know the consequences if “Rangers” dont stop us and go broke.

    What do Celtic do?

Go for it or rein back?

Based on what has been done to keep “Rangers” in the game when the previous incarnation went bust, including the granting of a UEFA licence at Celtic’s expense in 2011 that Celtic have abandoned to a more than dubious Judicial Process that turns out not to have the authority to pursue, what is not out of bounds to make sure there will always be a “Rangers”?

Scott Brown will set the tone for the game on Sunday so I hope he’s feeling fit and ready to go for his 500 and counting.

I’d encourage him to choose to attack the Broomloan end first half should he have the chance at the coin toss. Send them off kilter from the get go, just for the noise up.

My recollection of the Ajax v Tottenham game is that whilst pressing is very much part of the modern game, and what coaching experience is needed to tell players to keep running, it was the introduction of Lorentes that was the game changer.

So I’d be more than happy if we signed a Sutton or Hartson type to provide variety. WGS had it right. The team whose players run fastest, tackle hardest and jump highest wins.

I’d like more than a sprinkling of the Moravcick magic dust but I dont see it being beyond the capabilities of NL to produce a team with those qualities.

Or, in the circumstances Celtic make an all out effort to equal Jock’s and Billy’s 9 in a Row record.

  13. look ghuys I want to beat them as much as you all do, but I would not risk the wellbeing of our players to do it, our most important game is the cup final what is the point of going toe to toe with them evil barbarians, and risk getting a couple of our players injured. I hear talk about bragging rights they have nothing to brag about, even if they win at the bigotdome what trophies will be in their cabinet at the end of the game, none zilch feck all, its not worth the risk, id rather they beat us, than risk losing the cup final and the treble treble, once again only my opinion.hh.

  16. AULDHEID on 10TH MAY 2019 4:14 PM

    …………………

I get where you are coming from, and I am one of those Celtic fans who believe that Rodgers had his very own ” Game Plan” in place for the last huns game at Ipox last December, which was all to do with him suiting HIS own agenda. I have never thought in my life that ANY Celtic manager would ever be capable of such an “Agenda” ? This of course was ONE Individual at work, unlike your “Suggestion/Possible Theory” of Celtic as a “Club” possibly, ” throwing away” a League title to ensure that 9 or 10 in a Row doesnt happen, in order that “Rangers” dont go under once again ?

For the Celtic Board to somehow “Rein In”, Celtic on the field, I can only imagine that to do so, would mean NOT spending ANY Money for the next Two Years etc , and “allowing” Sevco to somehow catch up ?

I view the Celtic’s Boards Failure to deal with Res12, and the “Rein in Theory” ( which is certainly thought provoking ?), which you have suggested, to be a somewhat totally separate possible “Scenario”, in as much as in relation to Res12, to some extent Celtic have been able to claim “That their Hands are Tied”, and that there isnt much more that Celtic could have done etc etc….but You know far more than I do about Res12 tha ( Including Celtic’s failures ) ?

As for the “Possible Scenario” of Celtic FC deliberately preventing 9 or 10 in a Row, for the reasons that you have stated, I can only again imagine that the Majority of Celtic Fans would see right through any such “Scenario”, UNLIKE Res12, which for many ( including myself), was/is very complicated etc to fully understand ? Yes, I fully accept ( and Admire), that the Res12 Guys uncovered Fraud/Criminal Acts on the parts of the SFA and the huns, only for matters to be somewhat swept under the carpet etc ?

if Celtic FC were to “rein In” in order to help keep Sevco afloat etc, in order to do so, may I suggest ( and hope), that would be extremely difficult for any Celtic Board to deliberately undertake, not forgetting the serious Breakdown in “Trust and financial Support” that would certainly occur between the Club and the Support, if there was even a “Whiff” of any such Chicanary on the part of the Celtic Board ?

Would this not amount to Financial Suicide for Celtic FC, which could lead us a Club being faced with the possibility of throwing away everything that the Club has accomplished since Fergus took over ?

What if into the bargain, Sevco continue to overspend etc and are ready to implode yet again…and Celtic (at the same time), are seen to be unprepared and/or unwilling to go from Strength to Strength, especially IF there is a prospect of amore Riches from Europe and possibly some form of European League within the next 3-5 years or so ?

Maybe , your possible “Scenario” is just too shocking for Me to ever contemplate ?

  18. BIG WAVY on 10TH MAY 2019 4:17 PM

Lot of love for Olly Burke it seems. Not sure why?

Big Wavy, it’s all about opinions, obviously, but I think (as a poor man’s version of a centre back, back in the day when I was called a centre half among other things) that big Ollie is a nightmare to play against at the back. I had a ‘guest’ using my mate’s ticket at a game earlier in the year, a rather critical distant Tim sort, and when big Ollie came on I said “Just watch his movement, he’ll have these guys running into each other”.

Cue Ollie running left, right, deep, forward and the two muppets in central defence who, up until that point had just marked the centre forward, were chasing shadows, pulled out of position regularly, and we end up winning easily, thanks partially to Ollie and his upsetting style of play.

He’s no way worth double-millions of £s, but he must be a nightmare to play against, especially agin the usual suspects in Scotland. Against a higher quality of defender he would still provide problems, given his strength and pace. In my opinion of course.

    Auldheid,

Llorente was the coup de grace.

The damage had been done to Ajax before he came on, even though it was route one that produced the vital goal.

As for how far would Celtic go to save Sevco to the game, probably as far as not actively pursuing the fatal blow.

We play in a SFA controlled sport, under an obviously compliant UEFA, who have had as much of a heads up that it is possible to give.

Everything has been stonewalled or batted back from UEFAland and the SFA are hiding behind their flexible rule book, backed by the media.

Celtic do not have the silver bullet to fire.

I have said, right from the start, that for Celtic not to be ,in any way, compliant in the state of Scottish football, they would either have to be relocated to another league, or resign from the SPFL and SFA.

In all the years that I have been saying it, I have not read one viable alternative, other than ” Celtic should do something”.
