McAllister shows how far aspirations have fallen

330

Newco assistant, Gary McAllister, this week told the media “to finish the season with a flourish would be a big positive going into the summer.”  On hearing this, I thought back to the 3-0 win in a meaningless game against Rangers in May 1995.  We left Hampden (our temporary home) with a child-like joy: we had a great day out but the ‘adults’ knew nothing of significant had occurred.

It is demeaning for an aspirational club to talk about the prospect of feeling positive at winning a meaningless fixture.  Especially when they cannot even reach a cup final.  To the outsider, this looks the opposite of aspirational.  It looks needy and desperate.

Of considerably greater importance to Celtic in May 1995 was the Scottish Cup Final win over that other soon-to-be-liquidated team, Airdrie.  We brought a trophy home for the first time in six years, in actual positive.

Win, lose or draw on Sunday, anyone who leaves Ibrox feeling positive or negative about the summer on the back of what happened that day is a fool.  Gary, it’s not a good look.

  1. The Battered Bunnet on

Why is a win significant today?

Setting aside so-called ‘bragging rights’, and the matter of Lenny and his team maintaining their unbeaten 2019 record, and notwithstanding Paul’s allusion to foolishness…

Last season Celtic finished 9 points ahead of Aberdeen, and 12 ahead of Sevco. The 82 points gathered was by no stretch a record haul, and represents the second lowest points total (79 pts in 2012/13) of the Eight to date.

As things stand, we are on 84 points, 9 points ahead of Sevco with two matches to play. It seems remarkable that we could finish the season 15 points clear, or just 3, depending on how results play out in the final two matches.

A win for Celtic today would see Sevco travel to Kilmarnock next weekend to play a team in good form needing a win for third place and the prize of European football; a tricky fixture.

A defeat today for Celtic would see us at home to Hearts in a dress rehearsal of the Scottish Cup final the following week, players mindful to avoid injury against John Deere FC; tricky.

15 points, or three, that’s quite a difference.

For me, it’s all about the narrative. A win today sets up the story of the season, and there are two versions: A dominant Celtic team taking on all-comers despite managerial adversity to deliver 90 points and reconfirm the Champion standard; Or a transforming Sevco under their talented young manager, gunning for a discordant Celtic facing a summer of disquiet.

To my mind, we offer no encouragement to anyone. Ever. Come the end of the season, make sure the record shows that, despite (reputedly) £10m spent on players and a huge increase in wages, neither of which there was cash to fund, Steevee Geh-raard couldn’t match the combined efforts of Pedro and Murty.

  2. Good morning my darlings (!!!) from a very hot, sunny, bright, opTIMistic Costa del Sol. Breakfast has come and gone and the Cava was a nice accompaniment. First beer will be when the first goal goes in, either in celebration or to drown my temporary sorrows. If (when?) we win, and if I post on here later today, I apologise in advance for my no sensical ramblings as and spelling mistakes.

  3. Filip Benkovic to stay at Celtic next season as Brendan Rodgers makes pledge

The Croatian centre-back has done well in Scotland, when fit, and he could be back at Parkhead next season.

  4. TBB logically and eloquently as ever, sets out why the pursuit of 3 points today is a must.

I am in the camp that feels that League games after the title has been won are a total irrelevance. We won’t win by three points, or fifteen points, or anything in between. We won the league with three games to spare. Good luck and stay safe to all going to Snake Mountain today.

  6. Of course having better players and the benefit of an original properly run football club isn’t all that’s significant for Celtic today.

Fielding in actuality which officials from the SFA rat pack, actually get into your stadium to officiate, is part of a grand plan if these things truly did even themselves out Willie Collum would be a given, for Rugby Park next week and Douglas Ross couldn’t possibly be ‘running the line’ at Debt Dome for the third consecutive visit of Celtic, could he?

The huge © Neil Lennon Rainjurz disciplinary problem, has been watered down, then massaged by SMSM and its compliant officers, who have missed more than they’ve spotted, then blanked referrals in the proper procedure, towards real complinace. Morelos elbowed Broadfoot in the preceding game to Parkhead, and we what happened next, point being, he shouldn’t even have been on the pitch so ho hum.

It was always dunce of the class Kevin Clancy’s best shot of the derby when it means less, but I wish him well in his efforts to beat the nervous ‘homer’ token he’s been handed. None of the above matters, when Celtic can knock in five, ad nauseum? with God as head coach.

This is not Lou Macari with a late winner from Brian O’Neil today is the closing chapter on season seven for Sevco, and has no equivalence with Celtic visits before 2012. Neil Lennon the man who lifted this golden baton, has to pull off the normality of Sevco v Celtic, the reigning SPL champions.

Don’t like ‘rookie’ debutants – they have a tendency to be hero for the day!

  12. If true about the Sevco keeper put him under severe pressure from the get go. Good luck today Celtic bet them comprehensively, let’s finish the season with a flourish. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  13. So no Tierney or Forrest in the squad.

Back in September I reckoned we would win our home games and likely manage a draw at end of season away when the title was secured. The late December game would see us at our most vulnerable to lose as we would be running on fumes as normal then.

I would take a draw with this squad today and look forward to the Cup Final and Treble Treble.

    EMBRA – Is JF injured?

Hate to think we have to settle for a draw against a team with a discipline issue and onto the 3rd choice keeper

I’d prefer we dispirited them to dissuade any of their cash cows from donating more to DownTheDrainFC
