Newco assistant, Gary McAllister, this week told the media “to finish the season with a flourish would be a big positive going into the summer.” On hearing this, I thought back to the 3-0 win in a meaningless game against Rangers in May 1995. We left Hampden (our temporary home) with a child-like joy: we had a great day out but the ‘adults’ knew nothing of significant had occurred.
It is demeaning for an aspirational club to talk about the prospect of feeling positive at winning a meaningless fixture. Especially when they cannot even reach a cup final. To the outsider, this looks the opposite of aspirational. It looks needy and desperate.
Of considerably greater importance to Celtic in May 1995 was the Scottish Cup Final win over that other soon-to-be-liquidated team, Airdrie. We brought a trophy home for the first time in six years, in actual positive.
Win, lose or draw on Sunday, anyone who leaves Ibrox feeling positive or negative about the summer on the back of what happened that day is a fool. Gary, it’s not a good look.

Why is a win significant today?
Setting aside so-called ‘bragging rights’, and the matter of Lenny and his team maintaining their unbeaten 2019 record, and notwithstanding Paul’s allusion to foolishness…
Last season Celtic finished 9 points ahead of Aberdeen, and 12 ahead of Sevco. The 82 points gathered was by no stretch a record haul, and represents the second lowest points total (79 pts in 2012/13) of the Eight to date.
As things stand, we are on 84 points, 9 points ahead of Sevco with two matches to play. It seems remarkable that we could finish the season 15 points clear, or just 3, depending on how results play out in the final two matches.
A win for Celtic today would see Sevco travel to Kilmarnock next weekend to play a team in good form needing a win for third place and the prize of European football; a tricky fixture.
A defeat today for Celtic would see us at home to Hearts in a dress rehearsal of the Scottish Cup final the following week, players mindful to avoid injury against John Deere FC; tricky.
15 points, or three, that’s quite a difference.
For me, it’s all about the narrative. A win today sets up the story of the season, and there are two versions: A dominant Celtic team taking on all-comers despite managerial adversity to deliver 90 points and reconfirm the Champion standard; Or a transforming Sevco under their talented young manager, gunning for a discordant Celtic facing a summer of disquiet.
To my mind, we offer no encouragement to anyone. Ever. Come the end of the season, make sure the record shows that, despite (reputedly) £10m spent on players and a huge increase in wages, neither of which there was cash to fund, Steevee Geh-raard couldn’t match the combined efforts of Pedro and Murty.

Back in September I reckoned we would win our home games and likely manage a draw at end of season away when the title was secured. The late December game would see us at our most vulnerable to lose as we would be running on fumes as normal then.
I would take a draw with this squad today and look forward to the Cup Final and Treble Treble.
