McCoist quite right to hold firm line

980

In terms of pure logic, Ally McCoist was quite right to insist, “I can also assure every Rangers fan I will not be accepting any talk of stripping the club of titles. That is something we will never accept and everyone at the club shares this view.”

It is outrageous to put Sevco in the position of accepting Rangers are stripped of previous league titles while due process has not been carried out.  The very fact that the SFA and SPL are negotiating with Sevco over this matter is reason enough for McCoist to issue a firm rebuttal.  Quite simply, if the authorities are prepared to negotiate, their offer should be rejected until the last moment possible, at which point they will be meekly accepted.

The SFA and SPL must allow due process to take place and remove any need for Sevco to rubber-stamp a judgement on Rangers.  It is wholly inappropriate to discuss or agree the consequences of a guilty verdict, or subsequent punishments (losing titles won illegally is not a punishment), until a verdict is recorded.

Due process, please, nothing more and nothing less.  If Rangers didn’t illegally register players for over a decade neither they nor Sevco have anything to worry about.

Don’t bet on the Ki money being spent

If we fail to qualify for the CL it’ll be used to plug the gap in finances ……we’ve all seen that script before

  2. When I was young my father took me to see the Celtic. He did, because of a bad feeling in the East of Scotland following the earlier Hibs decision to remove the harp from Easter Road. My grandfather and uncles, as well as thousands of other Irish immigrants and their families, felt betrayed that the club who represented their communities in the East, allowed this to happen.

It was 1967 and Big Jock had his mind fixed on big things, which made the journey through to Parkhead, although a bit of a trek, the most natural thing to do in following their traditions.

Trek!…I remember 6 or 7 of us travelling in a 1959 Ford Poplar and always needing to go for a Lillian Gish as we approached Harthill on the auld A8. It took us a wee while to understand why my dad would always stop at the side of the road, instead of the toilets in the local pub.

I joined the local supporters club in Winchburgh in the seventies, I met a guy called John Horner, a crazier man you could not meet, a Lisbon and Milan attendee, and a republican. He taught all the young tims on the bus the words to every Celtic and rebel song in the book. He would always return to the bus, when it stopped, with a couple of cans for the young ones to share. He regularly travelled to Gawley’s gate – on the banks of Lough Neagh – and would always bring us back pictures, tapes and other mementos from the shops in Lurgan.

John was a man with a big heart who loved the Celtic, the more I got to know him, the more I began to realise that he was a gentleman and a little bit different from my first impressions.

He came to Canada in the late 80’s, was married and plied his trade as a painter and decorator. A couple of the bhoys from back home would visit John for holidays in the summer and were overwhelmed by his generosity. I (myself), was to travel to Canada in 1994 , at the height of the Celts for change campaign, to watch Celtic play in a pre-season tournament in Hamilton, Ontario. Typically, John had purchased the tickets and booked us into the teams hotel and refused to accept any money from me.

I met my (now wife) on that visit and the next year of my life was chaos, with me visiting Canada 3 times and her coming to Scotland to meet the folks, I exhausted my funds, not to mention the cost of the phone calls – getting a job and then jackin’ it in as soon as the air fair to Canada was secured…But all the time I managed to paint in Canada…imagine that. God bless you Horner… I know I never earned the money you slipped me.

I was married on St. Patricks day 1995 with John as my best man. He gave me a silver medal on my wedding day that I will cherish forever . He gave me an auld SW radio so I could hear the Celtic results coming in from the BBC every Saturday ( No Setanta and Celtic TV in those days) ,he also video taped the wedding – and the reception in his sister Teresa’s house and presented me with a copy of the tape, which included a shot of the groom sporting the hoops under the collar and tie of his wedding attire – great times………………………. I have never watched the tape in 17 years.

John had a bad fall on a building site about 4 years ago and awoke in intensive care to find pictures of the Lisbon lions and the greatest player he had ever seen, Henrik Larsson, adorning the walls in his hospital room (well he did teach me how to decorate) which was used as part of his recouperation as the nurses would point to a player and say John! Do you know who this is? I used to cry when he would the nurse would point at wee Jinky and John would smile and say “Dixie”. It was heartbreaking to see my friend as he was. His working days were over and he spent the next couple of years at home taking things a wee bit easier and attending hospital appointments

He developed pneumonia and was assisted by a ventilator towards the end. I would visit him and tell about the demise of “them” and sing him all the songs that he had taught me when I was a youngster. His eyes told me that he could hear me. The last time I visited Horner, I sang him” the lonely woods of Upton”. I cried , our wifes cried, his sister cried and the nurses cried – even John had a tear in his eye. We all knew that the time had come.

John died on the 12th of July, a day that would have stirred a few emotions when he lived……but to be honest, It will now always be remembered as the day that our friend passed away.

I am so proud and priveliged to have known John Horner and to have considered him my friend. I am also so thankful that we lived far enough away from Parkhead that we were able to have the time to learn and sing all those songs.

John, say Hello to my dad.

I think I’ll awa’ an watch a video.

“Do you not agree that any CFC fan is entitled to be unhappy and moan about such a woefully inept performance …..most who are moaning are more concerned by the bigger picture …..our appalling pre-season form ”

Yes and No. I’d already conceded fans have a right to moan. I don’t zip up the back and would never contend on that ground. What I said, basically was that I thought they were wrong not that they were unentitled.

As for your second point, my answer is no. I don’t think most chose to distinguish between pre-season form and the bigger picture. Most of them were over-emphasising the importance of pre-season results and were re-inventing history re the “we don’t do friendlies” argument, as the poster who listed MON’s pre-season disasters demonstrated.

    Do you know ?

  9. Sally’s comments are yet more hot air & bluster from someone who should simply be ignored until he learns what he is talking about.

There is nothing for the SFA to negotiate about, the now defunct club are either Guilty or not guilty – no inbetween. If found guilty, then natural progression is the removal of all tainited titles / trophies. No need to check if someone agree’s or not…the FACTS are all the evidence that is required. Given they have broken over 300 rules, it seems blatantly obvious what the outcome must be, but we must give the panel time to consider all evidence before declaring the result.

  10. With all the worry the bears have been doing is it any wonder that they’ve slimmed down to an XXL.

    Didn’t really want to click on the bear podcast in the previous post,but I’ll let you ehm chuckle at these gems;

“Can you imagine where we’d be if Ally wasn’t in there fighting? He stands up for each and every Rangers fan. I ******* love the man.

    Sebastian Brorsson

The man bleeds royal blue. Rangers through and through.

All other clubs envy us for having him.

    Indeed we do ;-~

Thought smith was a hard act to follow but my admiration and respect for ally and pride in how he has conducted himself is immense, there would be no rangers without him at the helm, the guy is a complete leg-end

Regarding Stripped titles – whatever due process results in is what I’d like no more, no less… I haven’t seen precedent for this? Anyone else?

12 teams played over a course of a season, aiming for whatever honours or money that resulted in (whether just survival in SPL to winning a Champions League place).

Calling the titles/cups void does not reflect the efforts the honest teams put in.

We’ll not see our captain lift the trophy, so it’s a mute point – I quite like the fact we could be on 49 titles by the end of this season… By 2014 we can have one big star and 5 little ones underneath (Joke… I wouldn’t wish us to copy that stupid 5 star crap)

    Take the titles…

Sitting in pub in Amsterdam so haven’t had the chance to read back over previous comments – apologies therefore if I’m covering old ground, however just need to say the following:

    1. The Celtic support over the last few days in Amsterdam were once again an absolute credit to the club. Loads of drink and good craic with no trouble and lots of new friends made – the locals and tourists alike enjoyed the show in Dam Square and the Celtic support were as friendly and good-natured as usual. Great time had by one and all…..until kick-off !

    2. The players on the pitch last night were quite simply an embarrasment. Pathetic is the only word I could use to describe the performance. The wry smiles from the locals today upon seeing the Celtic shirt says it all as to what they feel – it’s almost like they pity us having such a great support being represented by that shambles on the pitch last night. Yeah, yeah, yeah – I know the standard excuse that ‘friendlies don’t mean anything’ etc etc. But is it too much to ask that Celtic players show some form of application and commitment when they pull on the hoops and represent our club ?? Absolutely pathetic performance last night and if it’s indicative of the real quality of our team then we $ight as well forget about europe alltogether and just concentrate on beatin the shite that we play in Scotland every week.

Fed up with our great support being embarrassed by useless performances on the pitch.

I want to spend the next 6 home game half time entertainment unfurling flags of titles we were cheated out of.

In fact, I want more than that, every cheated trophy when they’ve finished the independent judicial inquiry. Bring back the ex- captains and managers and award then their rightful spoils of victory.

McCann, Quinn, the whole of the Tommy Burns team, it’s only fair.
