More worrying than the result

897

I know we had nothing up front, but Odsonne Edouard has looked more of a passenger in some games this season than Patryk Klimala and Moi Elyounoussi this afternoon.  The game was lost elsewhere.

Newco’s shape allowed them to dominate space whenever we had possession.  They were able to swiftly double up on Jeremie Frimpong and Diego Laxalt when the ball went wide, while they were compact enough in the middle of the field to keep Celtic from penetrating their final third.

Games are won and lost on mistakes and yet again we are talking about the defensive line at set pieces.  Connor Goldson’s ploy of standing offsite in the hope that a defender would break the line and play him on, was not subtle, but it was effective.  It was an excellent cross from the free kick (which wasn’t a free kick, but no excuses), Duffy was an enabler and Valarie Barkas could have done better.  Questions remain for both.

Culpability was less clear at the second goal, which was well worked.  With so many Celtic players in the box, you would expect one to get in the way of the drilled cross, but it fell to Goldson; teams who create chances get these breaks.  It was a deserved goal (again, no excuses, but the handball!).

The last time we dominated Newco was two years ago in a 1-0 win at Celtic Park when Olivier Ntcham controlled the game and scored the winner.  Stephen Gerrard learned from that day as Olivier has not had a sniff against them since.

Being ineffective up front and shaky at the back are worries enough, but the biggest concern is that we were unable to do anything to change the flow of the game.  An inability to control the any part of the game is more worrying than poor defending or not attacking.  It is more worrying than the result.

    Yes change required

    Recent performance unforgivable

I have Celtic in my heart but really finding it hard to watch our decline when we have such massive advantage

  2. I’m not sure if this is a positive or a negative- rangers are totally beatable- they are not good. They deserved to win today. They are not a quality team but they have found stability and clear roles.

We are in a mess at the moment- getting out of jail against them the last couple of years has come back to haunt us today. Can we get it together- a clear first 11 with tactical awareness given ageing stalwarts and covid- fugg knows.

  3. No Bobby Does It Petta on

Yer man on ACSOM was saying last night that if big Julien didn’t play today, then we wouldn’t see him in a Celtic shirt again this season. He didn’t expand on that.

ACSOM broke the team news re Welsh last night too.

Jaysus. We’ve just been schooled by them. Again.

And this is your contribution ?

  5. Positives from today?

New Bhoy at left back looks good.

We will be stronger when our unavailables come back

Can we change things tactically? Start to bang in a few goals? Improve morale and tempo?

We’ll know more by the first door on the Advent calendar

  8. Big Wavy I see you are once again slaughtering our esteemed captain. As far as I can remember you think ntcham is a player. Therefore your opinion is somewhat compromised, particularly since the aforementioned Frenchman hasn’t kicked his own arse for 3 seasons.

  9. Being ineffective up front and shaky at the back are worries enough, but the biggest concern is that we were unable to do anything to change the flow of the game. You didnt go far enough Paul, the buck stops with Neil. Whats clear is that Neil isnt up to it. Tactically not good enough, too many failures now in Europe and against them. NL will not be Manager next season. Can he get us over the line this term, i don’t know. Thems are nothing special neither were Copenhagen, Cluj and Ferencvaros, that is most galling aspect.

  10. I’m done with Ntcham after today, gutless. Some players were hopeless but i cant accept a lack of effort and not for the first time.

  11. From the start of this season, I reckoned the Huns were a much improved side and we had a battle on our hands.

The most common comment here was they were shite and if we turned up, we would hammer them.

I reckon no matter what team we put out today it was going to be a battle.

As it transpired, Eddie, Christie, Bitton, Elhamed & Julian were unavailable,

Not trying to make excuses , I am as pissed off as everyone else but the bloody International Break fecked us up big time. It was a big factor today and that can’t be denied.

We can say what we like here but Lenny won’t be sacked, He is here for this season and we just have to lie with it.

With empty grounds Supporters can’t even make a protest.

I reckon regardless of results both Lenny & Pedro will be gone by next season.

Today was a disaster but we are better than what we showed today.

I see the Bookies have now made the Huns favourites for League and they are probably correct but if we win our game in hand we are just one point behind with a potential 22 games left.

We have had a ball for last 9 years and in particular in the last 3, the QuadroFenian is still possible but if this is the moment that the tide has turned and it’s our turn to cry, then I for one will be forever grateful & happy for all the joy Celtic gave me, in recent years.

In saying this I am not conceding anything, I don’t care too much about the Milan game but we have a huge game coming up against the Sheep,

We need a massive improvement ,

Totally agree, complete waste of talent, lazy and totally lacking in commitment

  13. TIMMY7_NOTED

Picking players purely for their past glories is a fools game. Pick them on merit. Scott contributes little and is being overplayed. If that’s slaughtering you need to get our more often.

Ntcham is a terrific talent but you could put Zidane and Platini in that mess of a midfield and we’d make them mediocre. No shape, no plan, no tactics, nothing.

We have good players all over the park being made to look mediocre. McGregor is regressing, Christie an ill-disciplined headless chicken, etc.

    They need coached.

  14. Big wavy I think the point jackiiemac is making is that, this rangers team is average the fact we can’t make a dent in it says more about us considering we have far superior players

  15. weebobbycollins on

Don’t know what’s happening but the spirit seems to have leaked from the team. Once upon a time confidence was high, happiness was present, smiles were everywhere…has someone put a spaniard in the works? It has become hands on head time. Never good to see! I feel there has been too much chopping and changing with the team, very unsettled now. Always appear vulnerable to breakaways and crosses into our box. Duffy has not been the inspirational centre-back we yearned for. Signing guys on the last day of the window has been disappointing. There is an overall lack of dynamism from top to bottom…have we become too complacent? Have we lost our hunger?

    There’s something happening here,

What it is ain’t exactly clear…

Agree with your comments and am also thankful for what we have achieved but totally pissed off by us not kicking on from a position of strength. The replacement of the rat with Lennon signalled our downsizing to everyone and it’s biting us in the arse big time now.

  20. Big Wavy I agree on the coaching point but when you discard our captain after incredible years of successful service and want to replace him with a player who has had 4 or 5 decent performances in 3 seasons its obvious you know hee haw about the game.

  22. glendalystonsils on

Our declared policy of bringing in promising young talent , nurturing them , developing them and selling them on as much improved players won’t happen if the coaching is not there . They will not want to come .

What happened to this sports Psychologist idea that was being touted a few weeks ago to help us cope with the pressure of the ten?

At the moment we look to be in very poor psychological shape from top to bottom .

  23. TIMMY7_NOTED

Don’t put words into my mouth. Play the best players in their best positions. Neil is obsessed shoehorning Scott and Ollie into the same team (which doesn;t work), then Callum, Ryan and James. If Ntcham ain’t performing he’s dropped but we have a bunch of undroppables. Turnbull not trusted, neither Soro, Dembele gone, Klimala not trusted, etc etc.

We have a group of people and no system or identity. Stick them all in the same side and hope it clicks is the strategy.

  24. The Huddle,

IMO he will see out this season,

If he loses 4 or 5 games in a short period then maybe he would go but by then the League would be gone and we would just be building for next Season.

  25. any one if sevco a playing fair well south african judge thought their chairman was untrustwothy plus they been buying does any one if they are on the level skippy is a scouser so would not take his word.

  26. If Lennon isn’t sacked, we say goodbye to the league. That is fact.

I also don’t understand how Julien could be fit enough to be on the bench against St Johnstone, but nowhere to be seen today.

    Something not right there

  27. Lennon will not see past Halloween if things don’t drastically improve. Two defeats against Aberdeen this month and he’s gone.

The huns are well organised but we’ve regressed.

We’ve gone from being well coached to just putting the players out there and hope they do their thing.

The lack of subs at HT was criminal. Basic managerial ability was lacking today.

It would be a death march if they pull away and we continue to drop points with Lenny in charge.

That wouldn’t be good for the club or Lenny, he’s gone next season anyway, might as well start planning for the future if this season goes early.
