No deal for Celtic and Roberts as both look elsewhere

884

After edging ever-closer to a deal for weeks, it looks certain Patrick Roberts will not be playing for Celtic next season. You are well-aware Celtic have been desperate to secure his permanent signing from Manchester City, but I have it on good authority that the club and player are now looking elsewhere.

Brendan Rodgers has both budget and ambition for the season ahead and Patrick was a big part of those plans, but the manager has now moved attention elsewhere (and I don’t mean to Aberdeen).

Patrick blossomed here, in particular during the second half of last season. He is an entertainer in the great Celtic tradition, but I have confidence in the manager to deliver what is required for the challenges ahead.

We wish Patrick all the best and thank him for a great 18 months.

And that’s what he is paid to do, eh!

Is it only a keeper who is paid to do his job?, all those multimillionaire players and only the keeper is paid

  2. “Just about”. My understanding of this phrase is that it is synonymous with “almost”. It means it wasn’t successful.

He just about about kept that in. NO. He DID keep it in.

He was just about onside. NO. He WAS onside.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo is “upset” after being accused of tax fraud and wants to leave, a source close to the player told the BBC.

Spanish prosecutors have accused Ronaldo, 32, of defrauding the authorities of millions of euros in tax, which he has denied.

“He feels he’s honest, has good character and did everything OK,” added the source.

His Real contract has a 200 ginger bottle (£8.74) release clause.

The source added: “He’s very sad and really upset.

“He doesn’t want to stay in Spain. At this moment, he wants to leave and move to Scotland where there is no such thing as defrauding the tax man.”

Ronaldo, who joined Real from Manchester United for £80m in 2009, signed a five-year deal with the European champions in November 2016.

China would be one potential destination but the Portuguese forward’s advisers would prefer for him to stay in Europe, most likely moving to Glasgow where he could team up with his old mentor Pedro ‘the Pape signer’ Caixinha.

Ronaldo, who has helped Real win the Champions League three times and La Liga twice, is accused of evading tax to the value of 14.7m euros (£13m; $16m) between 2011 and 2014, small change in the Scottish scheme of things. He has indicated that he would like to sign for the world’s most successful 5 year old club.

Real Madrid have released a statement saying they had “full confidence” in their player, and that they were convinced he would prove his innocence, just what like the rainjurs did in Scotland.

In 2016-17, Ronaldo helped Real win the Spanish title for the first time since 2012 as well as retain the Champions League, but is bitterly disappointed not to have landed the Petrofac Cup, something he is intent on rectifying.

Ronaldo, who also won the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008, has scored a record 105 goals in the competition, 11 more than Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, his nearest challenger, but nowhere near as many as Joe “I can score blindfolded” Garner.

  9. Hail Hail bhoys and ghirls, my first post since Lisbon which was the trip of a lifetime and a special (belated) thanks to BRTH for making it such a brilliant few days.

Personally gutted about Paddy (and quietly hoping this is a smoke screen for the MSM lurkers) but in Brendan we trust and the reality is we can’t compete with EPL salaries and golden handshakes.

Anyway, on the subject of cliches I once went to a sportsman’s dinner many moons ago where Paddy Crerand was the guest speaker and he ranted against the lack of technical ability of the modern players and what they were getting paid. In particular he singled out Carlton Palmer who I think played for Sheff Wed at the time and said:

“All I ever here is he’s got a great engine, so’s my feckin’ Vauxhall but that doesnae get paid £12 grand a week! Ffs he coulnae trap a bag o’ cement. He’s the only guy I know who can trap a ball further than I can kick it”.

Cue hysterics and rapturous applause but it struck a nerve and even back then made you realise that the money in football was ridiculous. Unfortunately it’s no longer just ridiculous it’s obscene!

I think that the best place for Paddy to advance his career is on the continent.

If he wants regular football, then the rough and tumble of the relegation haunted EPL is not the environment to pursue.

He is, at this stage, a luxury player, great to watch and can be very effective.

However, the required work rate is not, as yet, part of his game and work rate is the corner stone of the English game.

France or Spain would, I think be a good alternative to Celtic, for him.

    Good luck, son.

I know that is the impression that most of us have … that English players run more, and the continentals make the ball do most of the work ….However, that may be an optical illusion …

a study was done of the 2016 Euros, which showed that, surprisingly, the Italian team ran more than any other team in the competition…. while England was only the 10th team on the list …surprisingly, (to me, at least), Ireland ran the least per match …

The article is attached here if you are interested.

it may be a case that the English players are so often out of position, and tactically unaware, compared to the continental counterparts, that it looks like they are working harder …

I think the continentals work harder, but they also work smarter … so, it looks like they are working less (if that makes any sense)

  15. MiT

Re the stats, maybes the reason that the Italians did the most running was cos they were out of position and had to run more to get back into position, just a thot :-)

Not long back in from the Celtic Charity Foundation Golf day at Renfrew and have a couple of observations:

    1. What a nice man and what good company my old pal Willie Wallace is. I hadn’t seen Willie for a couple of years and it was like meeting an old school pal. Great sense of humour, great camaraderie and great fun.

Willie the footballer and Lion has to be rightly honoured and admired, but Willie the man is just lovely.

    2. I brought back a few items from Lisbon with the intention of auctioning them for the Foundation. Taken together with other items donated by CQN’ers (Taggsybhoy and ACGR) these items alone raised over £1500.

    MiT,

Interesting stats. Perceptions are not always correct, but, to me, it suggests that the running in the English game is of the headless chicken variety.

The European top teams mobility probably is more likely to be off the ball, moving into position, kind of stuff.

That type of movement is not as noticeable as the chasing and harrying British game.

Pass and move is the way to go….and let the ball do the work.

  22. mike in toronto on

TTT @ 9:27 … I think you are bang on with that …. I remember a few years ago watching the great Barca team, and how the ball never stopped moving … but when you watched closely, the players also never stopped, but were also moving into space, so that the ball could always come to them.

Struggling with the heat, a fair few have not been so lucky, an old woman in the village died today cos of it.

  27. In the EPL, the home grown players run miles and miles because they think that hard work will make up for their lack of talent. At International level, they run less because they don’t have talented foreign players to create the space for them to run into, while the foreign teams have to work harder because they don’t have the English donkeys to do all the running for them. :-)
