Our α and Ω

422

I’m getting beside myself with annoyance at the emergence of blog and online distractions ahead of the most important game of the season.  Darling-Salmond do not get my heart pounding, Henrik Larsson’s summer conversation with Celtic (he was asked if he was interested, he said he’s not ready, nothing more than that), and despite the need to sign players, they would be pointless if we don’t win tonight.

This is our Cup Final, our biggest game of the season by some margin.  This game determines what pace our development project proceeds at, what players we can attract and who we can afford.  For the season ahead, this is our α and Ω.

For the players, it is a joy.  A gift.  This is their chance to perform a task they are more than capable of in front of an appreciative crowd.  For Ronny and Johnny, it is their first stake in the ground.

Don’t assume it will be straightforward. It could be a long night, we may lose the first goal, but it takes a brave team to leave Celtic Park with the spoils on a European night. We have to remain patient early on; Maribor will tire as the game progresses. The final 15 minutes should be Celtic’s most productive.

Enjoy the game.

Celtic TV will not be showing it tonight, but they will have audio.

This game is the property of the UEFA Champions League not Celtic.

I would imagine that a German football/sports channel would be showing it.

Being screened in the USA live on FoxSports1

  2. Celtic should put pressure on two weaknesses in this Maribor side.IMO the goalkeeper and central defender(no4) .

The defender lacks pace and the GK is a flapper.I expect us to run out comfortable winners 3-0.

Just make sure the fullbacks have got cover when they go forward.

And if in doubt, row Z.

  5. Itv/STV haven’t a fekin clue on CL nights, as soon as the teams come out the tunnell and make a line, they break for adverts, and you don’t hear Zadok the priest music, when they come back the players have all broke up and running around, totally useless.

    I agree with you.

They are no mugs, despite the first leg.

They counter well and scored more goals away from home last season in Europe.

They will be better prepared, but our crowd tonight need to be patient and overlook Efe’s regular mis-step and Anto’s regular offside.

    Wish I was going.

Saying al that I’ll take a 2-0 HT lead and I can enjoy the 2nd half.

Yes ————-but the cab is stuck in Hackney having come to a sticky end with a hairdresser from Barnet

  11. The nerves were playing up so badly earlier and decided to go for a walk along Greenock’s splendid Esplanade. If you know the spot you will agree it has one of the most stunning views in these islands. I thought the splendid scenery would take my mind off the game.

But no, I found myself dwelling on things Celtic, especially European nights and days.

Firstly my thoughts wondered to Lisbon and all its joys and glory. On then to morning after and the never to be forgotten privilege of holding the European Cup in my hands, courtesy of the permission kindly given by Mr Stein.

But it did not stop there. In my mind’s eye, I was seated on a train crossing the Pennines on my way to Leeds to watch wee Jinky torment the living daily lights out of England’s finest. Hampden and its record crowd followed in my recollections of great Celtic moments.

Milan was to follow and then Seville. In between times I recalled all those semi- finals of the Big Cup at Celtic Park when all the greats of the football world flooded through Parkhead gates.

After all those glorious nights, tonight might not seem so big a deal. But it is another European night at Celtic Park, one we need to win. But I go with the same fervour and the same love of my team as ever, above all with hope in my heart….

Connaire 12, you are a very lucky and privileged man indeed.

Hopefully, tonight will be another enthralling chapter in the marvellous history of Celtic, for all of us to enjoy, all around the globe.

    Yaaas – dancer!!!

Me and Wee BGFC just got two tickets for the Dundee game on Sunday – will await nervously until they arrive through the post.

Row A, too – magic – can smell the dubbin and wintergreen already.

    Anything else happening this week?

  14. North Cyprus. I do know how privileged I have been to see so many wonderful European nights. I just hope that in time the greatness will return. We do not have the financial means that other teams have in England and elsewhere on the continent, but then how much money did the Big Mhan have in comparison to the big guns in his time? We can but dream.

Getting more nervous by the minute. Trying to stay out the pub till later…well at least till 5:30! Sky sport saying the pressure is on us, the money, new manager.

Right that’s it, shower. Then round to the 5 ways to soak up the atmosphere. Plenty of hoops in Parkhead area now. Nae haribonions tho!
