Policing and Celtic

830

I spoke to Celtic today about various questions surrounding stewarding and policing in and around the stadium.

The club would not be specific on any particular incident but I got a run down on various instances (alleged assault, vandalism) when Celtic have responded to police requests for identifying information on fans.  Celtic said the police can only ask for identifying information if they allege a crime has been committed and Celtic’s safety certificate, allowing them to open the stadium, depends on the club complying with police requests if they allege a crime has been committed.

The club were clear that complying with police requests on such instances is not a matter of choice for Celtic, “It happens, it has always happened, and it happens at every other club in the UK”.

I asked if the club target fans and ask the police to arrest them.  I was told this is ludicrous to suggest the police do the bidding of the club (I was also laughed at for making the suggestion).  Celtic can revoke tickets and stadium access without recourse to the police.

My conversation happened before anyone at Celtic heard last night’s podcast from the HomeBhoys but I asked specific questions about the red haired fan discussed who was allegedly brandishing a seat and was told no police request had been received in connection to him and that his details had therefore not been passed to the police.

I understand the club have met with various supporters’ groups and clarified these issues, as well as more general stadium safety matters, and that they will issue a statement later today in response to questions asked by the Celtic Trust, who I believe put many of these points in writing.

After speaking to Celtic I spoke to a police officer who is a regular Match Commander at SPL games (not Celtic games) who confirmed clubs would lose their safety certificate if they failed to cooperate with the police.

Having had the chance to put questions to Celtic I asked them give others the same opportunity and to unconditionally meet with any fans’ group with concerns on any of these matters. They assured me they would.

  1. Montenegro has a population of 625,000. What an effort from a wee country.

We have 5.25M and are not a patch on these guys. Says it all really about our so called grass roots, not to mention the Engländer with their 50M+ population.

Yeah, who was the Spurs manager who fell into that trap? Think ‘arry Boy punted him PDQ.

If memory serves me correctly Ramos the Sputs manager at the time stated he had never heard of Hutton and had no idea he was signing, bit of a storm in a teacup at the time in London media certainly was NOT a football signing more Minty dodgy dealings!

  3. Mutton’s transfer involved these guys ENIC

ENIC Group (formerly English National Investment Company) is a United Kingdom investment company, focused on the sports and media sectors. ENIC is owned by Joe Lewis (through Tavistock Group) and Daniel Levy. ENIC’s Bahamas-registered[1] subsidiary, ENIC International, currently holds 85% of the share capital of English Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur.

Previously a private investment trust, English National Investment Company was floated on the London stock exchange in 1997 as ENIC plc and became a holding company for sports, media and leisure businesses. During the football investment boom of the mid to late 1990s it began to acquire shares in football clubs around Europe and bought stakes in Rangers F.C., SK Slavia Prague, AEK Athens F.C., Vicenza Calcio and FC Basel.[2]

As well as football clubs, ENIC also invested in other businesses, such as software company Autonomy, retailer Warner Bros. Studio Stores, gambling website ukbetting.com and entertainment complex Church Street Station.

In 2001 ENIC bought a controlling stake in Tottenham Hotspur F.C. from Alan Sugar and Levy became chairman of the club. Later in 2001, ENIC’s listing was transferred from the main stock exchange to the AIM index.[3]

In 2003 Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy, who controlled 52% of ENIC shares, formed Kondar Ltd to buy out the remaining shareholders. A cash offer of £40m was made to take the company back into private ownership.[4] Following the buyout, Lewis and Levy controlled 71% and 29% respectively of shares in ENIC, which was delisted from AIM and renamed ENIC Group.

Following its purchase of Sugar’s remaining shares in Tottenham Hotspur in 2007, ENIC continued to build up its stake, taking its shareholding to 85%. To fund this investment it disposed of its stakes in other football clubs as well as many of its media and entertainment businesses.

    ‘Maloney flatters to deceive’

When did that phrase enter the lexicon of football cliches?

I’ve noticed it being used more and more.

It doesn’t seem to have any meaning or make any sense.

Yet again England come up short. They are arguably the biggest under-achievers in international football. Jurgen Klinsman once said that since they won the WC in 66, England have never appeared in a major final. Germany (and WG) have appeared in nine since that loss.

Was trying to remember the connection. Brill for your memory/

Makes you wonder whether the cash actually swapped hands between the clubs or it was offset against other transactions (i.e loans)?

I am sure it was ruled by HMRC that profits/losses against transfer activities could not be set against normal football trading activities. This could be manipulated however for tax purposes if a company had an interest in more than 1 club and could influence transfer fees in or out. Not that Oldco would want ever to avoid paying Her Majesty’s tax :-)

  17. Ramos was the manager when spurs signed Hutton.

About 2 days before it was confirmed he was asked about signing Hutton in a press conference and said “who”

Genuinely didn’t seem to know who he was.
