Right back position focus for last days of the window

203

With two days of the transfer window left Celtic have strengthened attack with the loan acquisition of Timo Weah and Oliver Burke, and the permanent signing of Vakoun Issouf Bayo.  Ukrainian winger, Maryan Shved, is in discussions with the club but as Brendan Rodgers explained, we have many wingers at the club right now, so it is likely that if the deal concludes, Maryan will be loaned back to Ukraine until Burke and Weah depart at the end of the season.

Brendan also clarified the position in central defence, where we have two players to replace for the Champions League qualifiers, but Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic will retain their positions until the end of the season.  A lot of work in June for this issue.

The other position that remains active is right back.  Michael Lustig has been with the club seven years but is likely to depart at the end of the season, with injuries taking their toll.  I know there are a few options active but nothing yet concluded, however, this will be the main focus for the next two days.

I hear you big guy. And that actually shines a very poor light on CFC too. Basicslky no-one in Europe played more minutes than that kid last season.

Combine that with av 1.5 per game ‘bodyline’ challenges he receives per game….boom.

I’m no doctor, but my sense is that there has been real progress in detecting and treating sports injuries …

on one hand, kids are much more dedicated at an early age to their sports than in the past … almost routinely you see kids nowadays who can do things at age 6 that 14 years old did when I was young …

kids seem to be under much more pressure today to know what they want to do at an earlier age than we were when we were young … so, they are training harder and younger than back in the days …

by the time these kids are 14, they have probably ran more and lifted more weights than most of us have done in our life … that has got to take its toll on young growing bodies.

fortunately, people are now much conscious of injuries and how to deal with them ….

in the old days, there wasn’t the knowledge that there is today … plus, in the old days, players often covered up injuries so that could play, as it could impact on how much they got paid that week ….

Many years ago, I was involved in the groundbreaking hockey/concussion case … Dr. Charles Tator did groundbreaking work in hockey that has since translated into other sports, including american football and real football … and, slowly, owners are starting to see that ignoring the problem is a bad financial decision, so we are now seeing concussion protocols in many sports ….

my uncle (former Killie captain, and capped for Scotland) ended up living a tough life … most people put it down to the booze (scourge of players of that generation), and I’m sure that played a part in his death … but, I’d bet London to an orange that if they had studied his brain after he passed away, they would have found a severe case of chronic traumatic encepolopathy, not unlike they have uncovered with some of the NFL players…

having said that, I agree that while, in general, football has come along way in protecting the players (assets), KT does seem to have been used rather heavily for someone so young …

I’m sure he wants to play every game, but sometimes the club maybe needs to say to him that he needs to sit one out … for his and the club’s long term good.

  3. Im no doctor but……

Possibly the most terrifying words you’ll ecer hear from a lawyer. Apart from….your bill has been finalised …..

Seriously though, good points big guy. In short, old fitba used to destroy your body. Current fitba can do, but in different ways. Overplaying – esp at a young age – must be a huge factor in the latter. And we had/have a duty of care with KT in particular.

  4. Immediate response from Tusk – ‘ Withdrawal agreement is and remains the best and only way to ensure an orderly withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. The backstop is part of the Withdrawal Agreement, and the Withdrawal Agreement is not open for re-negotiation’

I also think we failed to recognize that KT was still growing and had faced a serious injury in our youth teams.

Young players often have the skill but not the physical maturity to play so consistently against grown men.

My son played on a junior hockey team in the USA at the age of 15 when a lot of opponents were 20 years old.

He usually played one midweek and two weekend games during the season.

He had concussions a torn meniscus and rotator cuff surgery in a two year span.

He will pay a price for this when older.

I can honestly say with better awareness i would probably have been a lot more cautious and hesitant to allow him to play so much with the knowledge about implications for health that is out there now,

  6. Gutman conspiracy theory:

He trains with Sevco, then defects to the Bhoys playing a few pre-signing runout games, despite having options with Chicago Fire (is that a TV series?). Then goes awol.

Given the toxic vitriol of Sevvy fans, is it possible he’s been threatened or spooked out of staying in Scotland?

Also, embdy seen the lesser spotted right back, Manny Perez??

  7. QUADROPHENIAN

I posted when the Gutman signing was mooted that i hoped Celtic had prepared the young guy from the potential backlash he may face.

Not only from the violent scum that follow sevco but the poisonous mssm also.

  8. Prestonpans

    I’ve been watching this.

Citeh miles ahead all night having scored after 24 seconds but a bit complacent – overcooking their play.

Newcastle have been hopeless but scored with their first shot.

Hard to love Newcastle as a team + horrible fans who don’t like us.

Could end up a good result for Jurgen & co if things don’t change!

  9. getting concerned with Celtic. At home we are strong as we have the players to break teams down and now have additional options. I’m exited about Bayo and his areal threat.

Its away games I feel we don’t have the battling players. Look at our midfield , only Brown is capable of the dig and he has lost pace over 10yrds. I hoped Mulumbu could deputize and not sure what happened to that lad. Mcgregor, forrest, Rogic, Ncham , Burke are all weak in the tackle.

More alarmingly, when away team roll through our midfield, we don’t have strong full backs who enjoy a tackle (exception young Ralston).

I’d be dissapointed if we don’t sign that type of player next few days – if we don’t, we are taking a gamble with the league and one that we can financially afford to avoid.

  10. Hi PPB

Can be a cruel game the fitba”.

    Manure down 2-0 as well.

    Bad night for the Mancs!

  11. Stebhoy

Agreed – we seriously need more “dig” in midfield as much as a right back!

Ryan is game but a bit light.

  13. Yup – good comparison!

Hope we can keep up the momentum on Wednesday – a nice gap and we’ll see how the FOD react.

St J are pretty decent away from home however, so we’ll need to put in a shift!

  14. Hope Liverpool win it – I like Jurgen.

Good for the Liverpool Tims – Robertson & big Virgil.

I reckon Milner gets us too!

Missed yr post but that woulda been good duty-of-care by the club.

And PPB, mibbys the lad was underwhelmed by the delights of Gayfield Park.

Now, Manny Perez, right-back-in-waiting news ?

  18. sad news about bencovic – his positional play is outstanding and I love the way he passes the ball – fast and crisp. Stupid of Celtic to release this information if true at this stage of the transfer window.

Teams now know we are desperate for CB and RB – we will need to pay the extra few million if we want to guarantee the league.

Can we still get McKenna? I’d offer 8m , I think he’s worth it and he’d fit right into the mix.

Gonna be an interesting few days – another window where we need to show our financial dominance. If we don’t – 10IAR will never come round in our lifetime.

  19. Hi Ghuys.. Evenin. Just been reading back..

Please correct me if I’m wrong.. But, will the Kerrydale be closed to the troops, and only be opened for reserved Hospitality?

  20. The transfer policy at celtic park is nothing short of a disgrace . We should be miles in front of them ,but have allowed them to steadily make ground on us by our lack of transfer activity .

It pains me to say this but mikael lustic has had one injury too many which has slowed him up considerly , a quality right back should have been brought in at the summer , no cover at left back for the kid as well should have been spotted , so obvious we had no one else that we had to play McGregor at left back against them, leaving us short of quality in midfield where they out smarted and out fought us , Brendan solely to blame for that boob . We have berkovic, who I wish we could afford , we have Boyata who is itching to get away , Jose how many lengthy periods of injury has he had already , good job the dud commper is there for company , another one who want to pick up his wage for doing nothing . Ajer I like him , but no where near the finished article , if only we had a big mark reiper playing beside him to show him the ropes . so where are we . Need a right back + Cover for the kid + . A replacement for Boyata and possibly for berkovic ,that’s 2 Central defenders . Hey this is adding up here . Now this also gives me no pleasure ,but our one and only battler , looks to have had one battle to many to fight on his own . We have been crying out for a ball winner / enforcer to help this legend for over a season now , again as we all witnessed against them . They bullied us into defeat , getting bullied by Halliday , airfield , and jack . Watching that made me sick . Enforcer another need added . We would get by with Rogic , Christie , Callum mc , Forrest if he shows up , Sinclair if he shows up too , but they need a tough guy to back them up . Mikey j needs built up but will do in time , now what about ntcham ,imho since dembele left , his body language ( to me anyway ) has suggested he wants to be somewhere else .french eddy for me ,moving in the same direction as ntcham ,and when injured they are in no hurry to return , Jose as well btw . So as I see it , a lot of money needing spent now , which had we a spend at the start of the season , we wouldn’t have so many wants as we need now . Will we get them ,not a chance in hell . We will ride out the season with us having many squeaky bum moments , at the moment we have the chance to put some space between us and them , but i wouldn’t bet on us dropping more points , And once more inviting the anyone but celtic brotherhood into the equation . To Brendan , Desmond and lawell for gods sake open your eyes , our deficiencies are there as plain as the nose on your face , get it sorted now . HH

  21. Have just seen this on the Official Celtic Site re the Kerrydale….

Please note, The Kerrydale Bar is also open to the general public at least 3 hours prior to kick off on a match day and does fill up very quickly.

Had promised to take the Missus !!! Was either the Kerrydale or Turnstyles!!

  22. jimtim – you’re bang on lad! btw – I just watched some vids of the RB from dortmund – considering youtube is supposed to be a compilation of the good bits – he looks totally shoit. Gumny on the other hand looks the part and similar athleticism to Kieran. we’ve made good money selling defencive minded players – NOW lets spend some money replacing them. Lawell and Desmond would be negligent if not!
