So stressed Juninho & film productions get an airing

689

Interesting angle in today’s Telegraph: “Celtic are the only club in Scotland, apart from Rangers, who are known to have used an EBT contract”. Why are we part of this conversation?  Despite the millions of words written on the subject of EBTs over the last six years, there appears to be a curious misunderstanding about them.

Juninho arrived at Celtic with an EBT from earlier in his career. Celtic funded this Trust around the time the player left the club, informed HMRC about the transaction, and paid the tax due. No side letters (contracts) were issued with regard to this Trust. No information was hidden from HMRC or football authorities.

The conversation went a bit like this:

Celtic: Hi HMRC, Celtic here.  We’ve paid Mr Juninho’s EBT £Xk.  What is our tax position?
HMRC: £Yk tax is due on that payment.
Celtic: Thanks.  Will pay today.

EBTs are in themselves not illegal, nor even immoral. They were introduced to allow employers a framework to give loans to employees.  Many employers, formally or informally, give loans to employees to cover everything from crises to Christmas expenses.  Or migration expenses, which is occasionally the case in football.  That some use EBTs to attempt to put income beyond the reach of taxation is a reflection on those clubs, not others who openly declare EBT payments to HMRC and pay any corresponding tax.

The newspaper goes on to offer a defence against HMRC, almost as though it was dictated from David Murray himself: “it is believed that one argument against the supposition that Rangers secured players by means of EVTs (sic.) is that a range of variable inducements were in operation at that time and not only at Ibrox.

“Other avoidance schemes involved investment in such vehicles as film production companies and forestry development.”

Yes, a range of other inducements were available – legal ones.  Other people legally used other schemes.  It’s clarity of thought like this being a defence of Rangers that which put them into such a mess to begin with.

Delighted to read Rangers Tax Case back with such insight last night.  Catch up with him here if you missed it.

  1. Re their roof…

I don’t know what size the loose piece of fabric is, but looking at the height it must be at, who’s to say where it might have landed if it actually became detached. The wind (and other factors like the shape of the objectI, could cause it to fall quite a way away from its original location. ‘Quite a way’ of course being subjective in the absence of additional information, but anything falling from the height apparent from photographs currently being shown on the tinternet would be extremely dangerous. Then when it landed would it just stop and come to rest or would it bounce and land even further away? Who then decides what a safe distance around the hazard is?

I hate to see anyone getting hurt as a result of this type of incident and frankly speaking their stand should have immediately been closed and evacuated. If there is one section that has failed then the entire structure should be inspected by a competent and suitably qualified and experienced engineer or surveyor to ensure that the problem does not extend to the entire structure prior to access being continued for their customers.

Someone has taken a decision in this instance to ignore risk, or at best tried to mitigate it by clearing an area beneath where the perceived hazard was ongoing, but eventually that mindset and course of action catches up wih you or someone who relies on you to have their best interests at heart.

This situation should not be allowed to continue and it doesn’t matter who the parties involved are. Safety First.

  3. Kevinbhoy,

After reading a bit about it, I’ve noticed that not a lot has been said about the danger to the players on the pitch.

And as you say the ambient conditions combined with the shape and weight distribution of the material could have created a far greater hazard than obviously allowed for.

I expect the HSE will receive a full report in the morning with the method statement on how the risk was evaluated and calculations showing the safe perimeters, wind speeds and estimated weight of the hazardous material.

This will also show the estimated incursion onto the pitch and the signature of both the match commander and match official agreeing that they were satisfied that everything that reasonably possible was done to reduce the risk to an acceptable level, problem being where the general public is concerned acceptable is very very low.

  4. What mystifies me is how they get away with it. If you or I had a venue accessible to the paying public and bits were hanging off of its roof, would you be allowed to still sell tickets and let people into it?

  10. The absconders have not flounced they are just taking a sabbatical until peace and fun breaks out on the blog. Being a free speech person myself scroll by is my only comment. For the CQNers who start engaging in personal cyber fights for differences of opinion all I can say is you are self harming. Don’t do it too yourselves, chill. I read the daily rangers and it is all becoming clear. War button and his magic mushroom are moving to Fulham at the very same time as Gordon Ramsey is looking at entering football management following his illustrious connection to an older version of the bares. Coincidence, I think not. Hail hail.

  11. Don’t agree with Anthony Stokes making it public about being unhappy at not playing . But how can he get suspended for 2 weeks for it and Kris Commons was picked to play the next game after his outburst in Molde?

  12. No got the time to read back but, exactly ‘what’ did Tony Donnelly67 say?…and, to whom?

Is it ‘one’ comment that’s the issue?

    Or, a serious of comments?

Now, before I go any further…I know, that I’am looked upon as, one CQN’s most prominent trolls.

Maybe, thee most prominent troll ?….(do I get a trophy ?)

All kidding aside….TonyDonnelly67 is a rock solid Tim…he bleeds green & white hoops…dont ever let that fact escape the growing number of hanging jury’s who find it….imho….far too easy to dispense instant justice as ‘they’ see fit…that, could be construed as hunlike….imho.

Ah mean, c’mon….is TD67 anymore annoying than me ?

Maybe,….unwittingly….I’ve helped to shape the mindset of TD67 with my constant banging of the drum to have a, principal figure from the Celtic Trust – Ms Jeanette Findlay – be handed the keys of Celtic FC and, be given carte blanche to appoint folk of similar ilk to herself into the ‘key’ positions on, every level within the Celtic FC not PLC. Maybe TD67 thinks that I’m a CT plant ?…which I’m not.

TonyDonnelly67 is like myself, a right pain in the erchie.

But, what way is it supposed to be on CQN ?

Sprinkle each other with rose petals ?

CQN is an amazing place and, the biggest surprise for me is, that I’ve not had my books from Paul 67 yet. There were times when I was, defiant in my posts about the board…shafting Celtic supporters which, in my book, is worse….way worse than anything that is going on elsewhere….I know now what, I didnt know then about going to far, being like a broken record in what I thought was the best that I could do to…tell Celtic supporters that they were being ripped off by the tory charlatans who run ‘your’ club…not that they neede ‘me’ to tell them…so pissed off that, I wanted Paul 67 to pull my account and I’d be off oot for good…maybe he will today ?

There were times when I was ill…fearing for my life…when I found the courage to let the Genie out the bottle…CQN was like this magical wall to wall of, unbelievable strength, hope, comfort….folk falling over themselves to be of some kind, any kind of help leaving what, some think me to be strong but….overwhelmed would be the greatest of understatements to describe what I experienced from folk whom, before my revealing post about – L.O.V.E – I thought that these same human beings would be, falling over themselves to see who could get to be 1st to throw me under a bus.

    Maybe they’ve reformed the queue ? :)

Now, no complacency from me….I’m alright just now but, I’m also aware that things could go pete-tong very quickly.

Anyway….never mind all that….Tony, if you’ve been hunlike to sumdy…put yer hands up…admit that you’ve fecked it up….apologize….then jump aff the tap eh the building:)….nah, try to build the bridge…..take the person or, persons oot for a meal then, doon to the Brazen for some Celtic-beers, get them sloshed, dip their poakits and git yer money back for the meal:)

Tony mate….maybe you and I are two of the same wolves…howling at the same moon only, with different tones ?

Maybe all these CQNers who absolutely blew me away with all their warm wishes and, most important of all….their prayers….when the chips are down, are just a bunch of nicker-twisters ?

This situation reminds me of the difference between, staunin in the Jungle when…if a pain in the erchie stood next to ye….ye could go and staun in anither bit.

But, if ye buy yer SB for a seat and, an erchie is sitting next to ye….yer goosed!…especially in the days of the waiting-list…remember the one that Fergus and Murray used to love holding at yer heid to renew yer SB ?…aye.

No everybody liked each other in the Jungle but, when we became one…nothing and, nobody would touch us. I recall the 2nd leg of the LCSF at Celtic Park in March 1984…the 1st time that I had set eyes on the Aberdeen casuals when they congregated at the corner of the ole Rangers end, next to the Main Stand.

They were starting to become pains in the erchies and, looking threatening then, the Jungle chanted over to them – “Casuals GTF” and, “Send yer casuals over here…”

Within minutes the casuals all just disappeared out the ground….

TD67, you and I stood in the Jungle as, brothers….dont let that magic disappear…please.

    God Bless ‘ALL’ Celtic Supporters

    ….off oot….

I wouldn’t put the poster Robert Tressell in the same category as TSD. I thought he always posted with respect for other posters and the blog in general. TSD on the other hand, well let’s just say I learned pretty quickly, as I have with more recent posters, that scrolling on by was the best option for me.

It’s the follow up to Caesar & The Assassin and covers the period 1991-2005 with 7 managers and 1 caretaker featured along with wee Fergus!

Celtic’s new Game Changer DVD is now available from the bookstore but we have now sold out on the Scott Brown book which CQN produced for Celtic. It’s still available from the club.

Thanks to everyone who has ordered from the bookstore, all orders received, including the ones that have come in over night, will be dispatched this morning at 9am.

While I seldom read TD67 at the moment, and while I accept what HT has said about the EC of the CT not abusing him, there seem to me to be others who gang up on him, whatever he says. Strikes me as much the same as happened during the Referendum.

I thought under ronnie stokes was one of our most improved players..stuck out on the left wing I didn’t hear him moan about it and along with work rate his assists and goals ratio were very good before last Christmas from what I remember .

He messed up coming back from inter game late but thought he deserved some game time at least by now.
