Spineless, unacceptable attack on Celtic fans

619

Your reputation was dragged into the mud by Social Justice Minister, Humza Yousaf, MSP,on Twitter this morning.  He wrote:

“On upcoming Celtic Vs Rangers match, we need clear messaging from everyone that fans must stay at home. If Police intelligence tells us, despite clear messaging, that groups of fans are going to gather to square off with each other, we need to consider if game should be postponed.”

“If Police intelligence tells us groups of fans are going to square off with each other” is his technique of throwing the blanket of blame over Celtic fans to prevent him addressing the threat of further social unrest head on.  He feels safe saying adding “Celtic” instead of calling out the true problem.  It is as spineless as it is unacceptable.

Be clear: there are absolutely no plans to postpone this game and there is no police intelligence that fans will square off.  None.  What there is, is a significant threat that the problems of last weekend are repeated on 21 March.  As far as this SNP government is concerned, we dare not speak that problem’s name.

This has nothing to do with Celtic and nothing to do with Celtic fans but your government is happy to trash the reputation of both.  He is toying with the reputation of the innocent and the occasionally vulnerable young.  If a Celtic lad turned up wearing lipstick Yousaf’s head would explode.

A lead in the polls does not permit you a free kick at Celtic fans.  Social Justice Minister, give me strength, you are contemptible.

  1. If it was the otherway around, we were league winners, 10 iar champions, and the game was at Ibrox would anyone be concerned? Would Glasgow be facing armageddon?

  2. Oh give yourself peace Paul for Christs sake.

In case you missed it, there is a group of our fans who claim to be intent on marching down there to “defend Celtic Park.” If it wasn’t alright for the police and politicians to stand down a week ago it’s not alright for them to stand down a week hence.

It would have been more fitting if you did what other bloggers have done and acted responsibly by urging our own fans not to drag down the good name of the club instead of this nonsense.

You sound like a ranting Follow Follow conspiracy theorist.

  3. JF i feel you underestimate the readers of this blog, many of whom don’t read yours.

I think this annoys you. You desire control, and respect. Your posts don’t aid your want.

  4. It has always been thus , Ibrox facist mob cause trouble , we get dragged into it, rules changed , we get hammered…. Scottish football is one of the last bastions of a business riddled with freemasonry top to bottom …. anti – Celtic views are essential to get on … lead article does a bit of good to let off steam now and again ….

  5. The ‘significant threat’ referred to should lead to cancellation of the game on 21st March. This is a no-win (sic) situation for Celtic. And, Celtic should take the initiative and cancel it themselves – to hell with any consequences – because it is the right thing to do in the current circumstances.

    IMO, of course.

    HH

  6. Has Paul been living on the moon the last week? It’s all i have seen on social media the last week or so about them marching on our stadium and us organising a mob to protect our statues etc. That would give anyone cause for concern. Or have i been living a dream, that i have just woke up from?

  7. Update on COVID, STV reporter up first and asks question about the forthcoming “Old Firm” game. Is it deliberate. The only fans who have an issue with this term are Celtic fans. Is it not just as easy to refer to it as the Celtic v Rangers game or Glasgow Derby.

Annoys the heck out of me,

  8. Vlad The Impaler on

    What a stupid article.

There must be more than one author on this site because most of the content is good but it keeps posting these occasional unhinged government / SNP rants based on thinnest of material.

  9. I’ll be insulted if Celtic start issuing statements before this match.

This is not our problem as correctly pointed out by the Club’s twitter feed.

Do not allow the media or government to present this as an ‘old firm’ problem.

  10. Spot on the SNP are scared of the Huns. They pander to them in the hopes that they might gain a new vote.

Starmer has the same issue he is pandering to the Red Wall Tories in the hope they change back to labour while insulting there current voters. Sacking of Corbyn and suspending 50 CLP Chairs will cost them more votes than they will gain.

The SNP should support the large amount of Voters who are Celtic fans rather than the Hand ful of Huns who will vote them.

Celtic will have to hire more stewards and improve security fencing all at our own expense

Hamza play the game and be fair

  11. Lots of ‘ifs’ in that tweet, which handily diverts attention from what we know about the agency of potential violence, that the Minister and his Government has just failed to prevent and address. It’s got that ‘one side is as bad as the other’ imprint that many people love since it’s much easier to appear above it all than pointing to the real problem.

  12. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

    Completely agree. Shameful.

Never trust populist governments of any stripe. No principles, just calculations.

The fact they’re not reactionary English nationalists like the current UK Govt isn’t enough and all Celtic fans should be calling them out on their cowardice and appeasement.

  13. Re Wilder losing his job at Sheff Utd.

Bad enough when yer struggling ,then 2 of your team(fleck and mcburnie) start acting their boot size by not goin in for huddle.coupla clowns

    Ah,…… the ‘Old Firm’ problem.

As predicted from the moment the Zombie steps out of line, Scotland goes into old firm mode, the only time we get mentioned first, is when Rainjurz prompt a summit, or wreck their latest havoc.

Roped in by OBAF, roped in by Covid, roped in by Whataboutery, Celtic supporters should box clever otherwise even legimate socially distanced protest, might be charged straight down Janefield St by fans on horseback.

A new world record for Sevco, the only club in the world who could have a game stopped for crowd trouble, when there is no crowd allowed.

Do your job Celtic, and stand up for our supporters.

  15. I agree with DENIABHOY (12:16 PM). Had the Celtic players had the balls to actually deliver “The 10”, the scenes in Glasgow would have been exactly the same as last weekend, with only the colours on show being different.

During the various periods of Covid restrictions we have seen illegal gatherings of “football fans” at Celtic Park, in Liverpool and Leeds, and in other towns or cities whose teams have enjoyed successes on the field, and usually at these gatherings there is much evidence of alcohol consumption and little of anyone being remotely concerned about the risks of spreading a highly transmissible killer virus,

The problem is the mindset of many of the type of people who follow football, and not that of any particular club.

Perhaps the authorities could just award each of the remaining Celtic v Rangers games to the home team and save wider society the potentially fatal fall out. Rangers can then put an asterisk against their one defeat on the league table, so their fan base will know it was only due to an administrative conspiracy!

  16. I knew we’d be drawn into the carnage of last weekend at some point.

Holyrood was never going to spend any length of time criticising Ibrox before quickly focusing on the ‘old firm’.

The both sides as bad as the other is a well worn technique here in the 6C.

DUP vetoes gay marriage has the media reporting ‘Northern Ireland Executive fail to agree on gay marriage’.

It’s a refusal to address the source of the problem which only ensures the problem constantly comes back.

  17. I agree with DENIABHOY (12:16 PM). Had the Celtic players had the balls to actually deliver “The 10”, the scenes in Glasgow would have been exactly the same as last weekend, with only the colours on show being different.

    —-

I do know we didn’t see similar scenes for 9 in a row.

I do know we didn’t see similar scenes for the quadruple treble.

  18. Garngad to Croy on

Shameful populist PR loving government , who will stop at nothing (killing people in care homes) to maintain their position of power. We have to put an end to this.

  19. We celebrate different to that mob.to us its a joyous occasion..them? its a show of strength..they take pride in their vandalism

  20. This is goin to come back to haunt SNP. They are playing a dangerous game trying to garner support from the bigots .

A spike in covid in Ayrshire. Now, I wonder what villages that could be ?.

We are daft if we think none of our fans will appear on 21st. Of course they will. And we will be dragged into it.

Lets concentrate in getting our structure sorted followed by dispelling the lie of 55 and all the other pish we have been seeing recently.

    They are Deid.

  21. AN DÚN, you make a valid point, but 9IAR was a mere stopping off point to the end goal that the Celtic support had been singing about for the last 8 years, and it was achieved in rather different circumstances, off the pitch after a protracted process of eventually calling the season to an end. And the QT came in the midst of the movement to oust NL, and at a point where the Celtic “supporters” were heaping criticism onto the management & coaching team, the players and the club executives at every opportunity (rather than actually supporting them in their time of need). I’m not sure there was much of an appetite at that time for a collective song and dance!

  22. I have no intention of defending the SNP but would any Scottish Government dare to attribute blame solely to the deid team? I doubt it; look at the equivocation of the Tories earlier in the week. Labour were equally mealy-mouthed, to say the least. The only one to raise his head above the parapet was Harvey of the Greens.

Will the SMSM, including the BBC, ever criticise the deid team for anything? The only journalist ever quoted on here is Ian Archer and he died a fair few years ago. Would he be allowed to criticise if he were alive today? Doubt he would be published.

I have said already that Celtic should simply tell the SPFL they won’t fulfil the fixture and let them deal with it. I would love to see them squirm. If needs be, Celtic can blow the lid on the 5 way agreement and see what falls from that.

  23. According to the lack of action against Sevco and its supporters The pandemic is over.

    No need for social distancing.

    Car sharing allowed.

So the game on the 21st should go ahead.

    Bring them on.

Willie Rennie of the LibDems named Rangers as being responsible, and i dont vote Lib dem

  25. Well said Paul. I’m sick of the false equivalence from Nicola and her acolytes. Time they came out and called those responsible to account instead of dragging Celtic into it. They suck up to Rangers hoping to win votes that they are never going to get.

  26. Let me get this right some are saying Celtic should refuse to piay a league game.

    Utter Tosh.

What punishment would we receive fir not fulfilling our league games.

They would throw the book at us, possible point deduction, thrown out the League?

Maybe someone who knows the rules better than me could enlighten us if you do not fulfill your games/commitments what punishment you receive?

Its a Mexican stand off and our governing body are being shown up again as cowards pandering to the Hun Hordes.

    D :)
