Standard Watt

545

Two years ago, Tony Watt was putting a light under our fire. The debut goals at Motherwell, the point rescued at Dingwall, then came THAT goal, his future looked secure, but it’s been downhill since.

Tony has the athletic abilities to be a firm favourite, but Neil Lennon shipped him out a year ago, amid comments about the player sorting himself out. His manager at loan club Lierse was soon singing the same song. Now the player is in Liege as Celtic have accepted a bid from Standard for a player, who under different circumstances, would be considered a prodigy.

It is no surprise Ronny Deila has decided to cut him loose; what little we know about our new manager suggests he doesn’t offer too many last chances. For Tony, this is likely to be the last chance to build a memorable career, if he slips up at Standard, next stop will be the likes of Kilmarnock.

Southampton have brought in around £120m in transfers this summer already.

    Plus compensation for their manager.

Some of the players had never been heard of two years ago.

That is a phenomenal amount of business, but it isn’t sustainable.

But as long as they remain free from relegation, they will consider it a worthwhile policy.

The fans won’t though. But since their income from the fans is dwarfed by the above figure,do you think their board care?

    Me neither.

  7. In April 2013 while I was visiting Scotland from my then home in Australia, I was in the company of some football people, including Celtic connections. I was told a story about Tony Watt. It was pretty bad and concerned his behaviour at Lennoxtown. I won’t say any more than that, just as I have never posted the info on CQN or anywhere else in cyberspace, because it is hearsay. I cannot verify the story’s veracity so have never revealed what I was told, except the part about his Celtic career under Neil Lennon being effectively over.

It wasn’t long after that before Watt was sent to Belgium on loan.

I read some posters on CQN complaining that Watt was never given a chance and some even suggesting that Lenny had it in for him in some way.

The people who make such claims know absolutely nothing about what has gone on behind the scenes. Why would Neil Lennon cut off his nose to spite his face?

The same goes for Ronny Deila.

I have told CQN several times over the past year that Tony Watt had burned his bridges and would be gone before this season starts in earnest.

I hope he can grow up and become a successful footballer. It’s sad that it won’t be as a Celtic player, but that is down to Tony and nobody else.

Agree re Stokes at higher level – he’s not cut out for it… I’d imagine lack of pace to blame.

Commons also has lack of pace but can not be bracketed with Stokes.

Commons was voted in to top 35 players in CL last year.

However if forced , I ‘d chose Watt over both at the higher level.

  14. Cant believe some of the negativity on this site. Unsure sometimes if it is a Tic site.

Helps to criticise but some posters NEVER have anything positive to say about Celtic. Could anyone imagine 5 yrs ago living in the times we are currently living in with Rangers dead and us going for 4 in a row with Champions league football on the horizon again.

Of course I take issue with some aspects of my club and how it is run. Of course I would like the Board to confront/ be more proactive in highlighting the fact that The Rangers are a new entity.

Of course I would like to see Resolution 12 more actively pursued but some on here need to remember some of the things we do well and the position we are in. Criticisms tend to be more valid if successsses are occasionally alluded to.

  17. Catching up with the various views re Tony Watt and if he has gone so be it, but it will be interesting to see how he progresses and also whether this is Ronny’s line in the sand to other players – if as PAUL67 says he doesn’t offer too many last chances, are we really to believe the penalty incident is the last straw, surely not?

  18. bournesouprecipe on

Best wishes to Tony Watt, and thanks for the memories.

Happy rebuilding is continuing, we’ll judge Ronny Deila and Celtic, after they’ve attempted to repair last seasons wastefulness, in attacking buys, and the squad is trimmed for the new manager, to bring in his own players.

Confident of victories in both legs of the Legia Warsaw game.

  22. I can’t fathom supporters who are criticising our management for selling Tony Watt. It must be apparent to all of us that he has serious problems. Neil Lennon and the Lierse manager both had issues with his attitude. So it seems does our new manager. Seems to me there is only one person responsible for Tony Watt no longer being a Celtic player and that person is Tony Watt.

I hope he grows up and becomes a player; sad it won’t be for us. He had the chance to live our dream and he threw it away.

  25. To be honest with you I am not the least bit bothered about the Tony Watt situation. He obviously did not impress Neil Lennon. It could have been down to his attitude, I really do not know. It might have been a boardroom decision because of the mony offered. He was not a first team choice of Ronny’s and the profit margin considering what we paid for him was considerable.Myself I think it is a good bit of business. I will not miss him ,but I wish him the best of luck and hope he is successful in his future career
