Sustainable, successful, team development

799

There are several parts of Tuesday’s performance which could be improved upon, parts which will be exposed by the rigours of Champions League football, but we looked like an experienced European team, one who could go away from home, roll with the early season uncertainties, but still have enough in the tank to win comfortably.

For the last couple of years we have watched a team mature while Neil Lennon has continued to add young blood to the squad.  Fraser Forster has become an adept shot-stopper, puncher and kicker-with-both-feet.  Joe Ledley has developed into a disciplined anchor in midfield while Adam Matthews, Victor Wanyama and Beram Kayal have progressed even quicker than I am sure the manager expected.

Last season’s Europa League campaign contributed significantly to the development.  The team seemed to grow a few inches during the home win over Rennes, which propelled them onto the league title.  A Champions League examination will present no fears but will expedite progress.

We could be on the verge of the first sustainable, successful, team development plan in 40 years, one that delivers titles, significant progress in Europe and lives within its means.

  1. Recall Celtic’s declared interest in signing both Brown and Thomson from Hibs….that January Transfer Window..

Both players had expressed an eagerness to join a Celtic squad which had reached the Final-16 in the CL…and developing their exciting potentials…

They were close friends and flatmates, who had come through the Hibs Youth System together….

Thomson was a useful sporting player,as yet untainted by mutagenic poison of Mordor…

If the pair had arrived at Parkhead together, their bond would surely have helped them settle down in their new environment….and more quickly reach their full potential….

Ron Petrie was interviewed ‘Live’ on Sky,at the beginning of January…and questioned about Celtic’s interest in the players…with a bid of £1M for the duo having been reported.

Petrie replied that it would take a bid of £1 for EACH player….to secure their services…

So we ended up paying £4M for Brown only four months later….and he took some time to display his expected form.

It was widely reported in the January transfer window….that the Tangerines had rejected an offer of £500,000 for Johnny Russell….demanding £1M.

I am not aware of him making great strides in his abilities since then…..yet the reported asking price has been raised to £2-3M….

Well we see a lot of speculation about various targets….which one cannot really forsee enhancing Celtic….Campbell,James and Bullard etc…which would not really have been worth the candle….

But sometimes a particular signing seems to tick all the boxes, and may prove vital towards securing the title..for instance, the tall Spanish striker…who could well have made a significant contribution towards winning the league.

Who was to know that the GA would go into meltdown mid-season…?

The Board should be ready to open the Biscuit Tin,and spend a modest additional amount…..to secure the services of an important player for the squad….at the time when his input was required…and he could have had an important impact towards winning the title….and there’s Stephen Fletcher…;-)

Last caller on Clyde got the message across on Oldco/Sevco particularly who the real victims were of Rangers behaviour.

There has been very little focus on the good feelings stolen from the supporters on the wrong end of Rangers behaviour. Its all about the poor Rangers “we have been punished enough” brigade, too many of whom have air time to punt that message.

    Wimps.

  3. SSB pundits know it’s a new club.

But they just can bring themselves to admit it.

Sandman – you are guilty of the worse kind of lazy journalism.

You equate calls for us to strengthen the team with the folly of the Flo purchase – as if they two things are automatically the same.

The you want to shove this down your fellow Celtic supporters throats

Perhaps you should take a long hard think about things?

    ===============================================

Touched a nerve there, did I?

Looks like you’re greetin’ as per usual now that your predictions/fantasies of apocalyptic failure and board malfeasance have been located as coming from somewhere up yer erese.

I tried to make the post simple.

I gave you a simple mantra: ‘It’s not how much you spend, it’s WHO you spend it on.’

I gave you two players to illustrate this – Henrik Larsson at a cost of £600k and the superstar Flo at £14 million Hun dolla.

Now, which bit of the analogy/example/common sense didn’t you filter?

Or maybe your angst and general misery cannot function in the current climate of controlled optimism, our club once again within reach of the promised land.

I suggest you take a long hard look in the mirror, ask yourself if you really do wish to support Glasgow Celtic or are just using them as a crutch for your own self-loathing.

You’re entitled to rattle on with dire caveats about our future;free speech, etc.

Just try not to spill yer toys from the pram when someone makes a point of order/correction/simple fact which counters your negativity.

I gave up on SSB a number of years ago as I mentioned previously when Terry O advised that he’d been banned from the programme.

In the time that I did tune in the stupid stupid Laurie could come on anytime he wished. Because of course he is stupid and poses no threat to the simpletons on the panel.

totally agree about the signing of younger/ unnkown players rather than overhyped, overpriced ghuys from the elp and please dont go signing loans. however, celtic should be doing their homework all season and should be hitting the ground running when it comes to summer signings.

celtic want more supporters through the gate, simple, get supporters excited about the season, how do you do that? get fresh blood through the door, hype up current players etc… the worst thing celtic could do is sell doom and gloom i.e. the need to sell, ffs every club needs to sell. thing is, if you bring in a player a couple of days before/ after the sale of a player the talk is generally on the incoming player. if you are developing the celtic triangle put a positive spin on it, any and all progress is progress.

  17. I was just wondering why Black would swap the spl and the Europa league to play in Divi3?

Is it just typical of the hellishly moronic hun mindset?

He often misses the point and gives enemies of Celtic mud to sling precisely because he has missed the point and they are not bright enough to realise it.

There is NO equivalence in the history of Scottish football for what Rangers have done to our game and Celtic.

I’m quite happy to let bygones be bygones, but only on the condition I am not having to do it all over again every Saturday Rangers are again playing as SPL rivals.

I think the language needs to change and instead of talking about punishment we should adopt the American term “correction”.

At least with correction you can measure whether what you are doing is having the desired effect, ie behaviour change.

So far there is very little evidence that there has been enough correction, more defiance than anything.

In the US Rangers would be in the cooler by now.

I still can’t be;ieve that the MSM haven’t learned anything yet – it got me thinking about what would the questions CQN would ask Mr Greene if we got the chance. I have put a few for starters – and would welcome any other ideas….

    1) Based on season ticket sales of £10M or there abouts, how do you plan to cover the running costs for the rest of the season?

    2) You stated before the CVA went for approval that this was of paramount importance, because anything else would mean losing the history..what has changed since that statement?

    3) You have said on a number of occassions that you would reveal who your backers are… well who are they?

    4) What process do you use to determine which bits of oldco you want, and what bits you want to ditch? is it simply that you want the good bits and get rid off the bad bits?

5)Bearing in mind the track record of your supporters in buying into share flotations – who is going to underwrite your £30M flotation this time around?

I think I could go on, but look forward to seeing some other additions.

Final cheeky question – do you think it is good for Scottish football that Celtic will be playing CL football this year?

I am a huge admirer of Brendan Rodgers but he has shown a huge lack of respect towards Scottish football with his team selection.

Methinks Brendan needs to be taught a salutory lesson.
