Teams with inferior resources have figured out how to play us

426

Despite benefiting from the worst goal I’ve seen conceded against Celtic, a well-drilled by no more than competent Kilmarnock team came from behind to take all three points and leave Celtic at a multi-year low yesterday.

Excuses are available: the pitch, the fact that we made six changes to the starting 11, but the reality is yesterday’s performance was little different from what we have seen so often this season.  I could make a case that we were worse still in the home win over Hamilton.  The latter performance took place on a pristine Celtic Park with Dembele and Griffiths both starting.

Two seasons on, teams with vastly inferior resources have figured out how to play us and we have not figured out how to compensate for this reality.

I trust the manager.  He has delivered and deserves our faith.  He will get it right and deliver 8-in-a-row, but I fear for our treble on Wednesday night.  Having failed to win any of our three away games against Premiership opposition, the pattern is too complete to ignore.

Apologies for the radio silence on CQN yesterday.  The server was knocked off by the volume of visitors and the recovery process caused further issues.  Been ages since this has happened, but I suppose it’s been a while since we’ve had results like this.

  1. A couple of possibilities:

    1) In the same way as nearly every photo of Neil Lennon , Celtic Manager, portrayed him as being angry, I suspect we might now see Brendan portrayed in every photo as being deeply troubled ( Then people will make their own minds up !!!);

    2) Brendan , it will be hinted, will be leaving at the end of the season owing to his dissatisfaction with The Board. It will be ignored that he has publicly supported both Lawwell and Desmond.

    Cheerio for now.

  2. It was only the second goal JH was culpable for imo.

For the first the midfield provided no cover to the left and KT could’ve been braver/faster to block the shot from Burke, can’t see how JH was at fault for the first.

DDV make one appearance for Nottingham Forest the year before he signed for us.

Gamboa made one league appearance and 3 overall the year before he signed.

But yet they did not take any wage drop signing for Celtic?

I mentioned the other day that eight of the starting line-up against Rosenborg were from the Gordon, Neil and Ronny days, plus two young French bhoys and one on loan defender. My main point was that while that team illustrated a certain stability, it did not represent a football revolution. Even so, it was good enough to beat the Norwegien champions for the second time this season, and to keep a fifth clean sheet in a row. Did we really need to make five to six changes in order to play Killie, and if we did were the players coming in better than those left out? Chaim needed replaced, so Malumbo a good replacement, Griff comes in, scores a goal, but all in all not an improvement on Thursday. Brendan has worked wonders with the players of three previous managers still at Celtic Park, won the most silver since the days of Jock Stein and bettered a one hundred year old British record, but what he, and Celtic, have not done is improve the first team this season. Or at least, not so far that I’ve noticed yet.

  5. Massive clear out is required. Too many picking up good money and contributing little or nothing.

De Vries, Compper and Allan. pay them off and let them get on with their careers.

Gamboa, Simunovic, Hendry, Kouassi, Christie Sinclair, Hayes and Benyu, tells their agents they are available for transfer and we won’t be difficult to deal with (that would of course mean keeping PL away from negotiations).

8 of the 11 above have been signed by Brendan Rodgers, calling into question either his or Lee Congerton’s judgement, or both.

That still leaves a squad of 21 plus the much needed additions (right back, centre back, attacking midfielder, striker minimum)

Add to this Forrest and Boyata can speak to other clubs from 1st January. Replacements required if/when (in that order) they leave.

  6. One more thing:

Torpid: mentally or physically inactive; lethargic.

Turgid: swollen and distended or congested.

I don’t know how KT has not been slated for his performance yesterday. His defending was weak and he was responsible for the first goal, not Jack Hendry. He was closer to Burke, didn’t close him down enough and turned his back. For the second goal, he badly mistimed his jump and jumped underneath the ball rather than cutting it out as first man.

Tierney is the worst for passing backwards. He gets into the opponents half and 7 times out 10 stops and plays back. On the odd occasion he runs at a player he gets a good ball in. He doesn’t do it enough.

Yes he’s a fan who plays for the club but that doesn’t exonerate him. Better defensive play from him could have prevented both goals. There was also the time when O’Donnell skinned him in the first half and git a great cross in.

He is just as culpable as any other member of the defence but gets a free pass.

  11. It’s the malaise in the team that needs to be addressed. Replacing players who are off form won’t work. In recent weeks we’ve had calls to give just about every first team player a rest. If Ntcham, Eddy, Forrest, Calmac, & Rogic are duff who can we replace them with? Even Tierney and Broony are getting flak. The only solutions are to trust BR to sort it out, or replace him.

I personally think we have the best team and manager in the country by a mile, and need to tough it out, until Xmas, then if we are still failing collectively, drastic action needs to be taken.

Reluctant to say too much at this time as i have so much going on in my head. However, you only need to look at the Managers body language in his interview with Celtic TV, it is very worrying. This situation which has evolved into a crisis was entirely avoidable. PL has an awful lot to answer for. IMO he needs to go.

*I know, how dare he abandon the back post at a last kick corner, noticed the quimster is back attacking his favourite target, oh well at least he’s leaving James Forrest alone.

BTW haven’t sen it mentioned but two Celtic rejects scored the goals yesterday.

Paddy Roberts on bench again last night v Barca and didn’t get a run out. I wonder if we will see him back in the Hoops in January if that continues.

I did see that when I read back. I was also bemused that he got MOTM on Thursday. He is progressing – hesitant in defence and attack. When he does attack, he is dynamite but doesn’t do it enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I think he is the best we have had since Danny McGrain but maybe a wee rest with Izzy getting a few games may help!

  18. CELTIC legend Jim Brogan has died aged 73 after a battle with dementia.

The former left-back, who was diagnosed in in 2008, passed away this morning at Moffat Street Nursing home in Glasgow.

    RIP Jim

  19. Bhoy from the Boyne – Paddy couldn’t get a game last season due to form of JF. He’s not going to come back to us to sit on the bench either.

BR is going with JF, S Sinclair, Lewis Morgan, Arzani and Mikey J as his wide players. I know nothing of Arzani but the rest of them are more than good enough for the SPFL. MJ and LM, if used wisely, are future stars.

I thought Sinclair was back on form a couple of weeks ago but sadly has disappointed again in his last two appearances. Amazing to think he was banging on the door of the England team two years ago.

I think KT has regressed as a player due to the coaching instructions and system.

I said so last season and caught many angry responses.

This season at AEK away he only decided to join in the game once we were 2-0 down.

Did he decide just to ignore instructions and go for it?

All season with the exception of the Sevco game he has looked uncertain and unwilling.

In one game earlier in the season i decided to see if i was being unfair of my assessment of him and decided to mark down his stats.Off the top of my head he had 22 forward passes,29 backward and 4 sideways plus one shot.

What happened to thet positive aggressive tackling young man who came into our side 3 seasons ago and made us better?

ETims this morning suggests that Brendan has handed his notice in and will leave at the end of the season. It also suggests that the players know this and are not happy. Tierney, Boyata, Ntcham had transfers turned down. Griff, Edouard, Rogic have all signed new long contracts. Etims suggest that this is what Dembele pulled Brendan up at Training for and got his transfer

*I have no time for bader as is pretty evident on here and other sites but when the beast, who he was close to, told him he was leaving for annfield in the summer he told him to not let the door hit him on his big heid there and then, that IMHO saved them the league as they were trailing the sheep at the time.

  25. “I fear for our treble…we will win 8 in a row”.

Sorry, Paul but this attitude goes along way to explaining days like yesterday. We are complacent and lazy. We lack a work ethic. Forget the treble. Forget the Europa league. Let’s play our strongest 11 every league game and fringe players for all other tournaments. We need to put together a 10-12 game winning run and get this league put to bed. It won’t just happen. We have to earn it and that means full strength teams and no Jack Hendry.

Strip away all the shite, we and sevco have made near identical starts to the season. They’ve scored 15 though in the league to our 6. That must be addressed and quickly.

No more talks of trebles. We’ve a league to win.

  26. After the successes of the past two seasons Brendan feels he is entitled to make demands of the board…PL looks down and sees Commper or Compper or Commpper or Ccoommppeerr (whatever his effing name is), Kouassie, Hendry, Hayes and thinks, “this man is getting no more of my bonus money…this could be a long cold winter and I have a driveway to heat”…both of them believe they are right and the other is wrong…but who suffers most? Yes, the fans! Always the fans…lip sevice aplenty but who really cares about us? Not Brendan nor Lawwell nor the players…

We’ll still be here when you guys are long gone…

  27. !!BADA BING!! on 24TH SEPTEMBER 2018 2:14 PM

Some guys on about ‘arrogance ‘,how arrogant is it to want rid of a guy who has gave us the Double Treble, and arguably our best manager since Jock Stein, who are we going to get who is better? Sure we have problems right now, this is when he needs to earn his corn.

    …………………………………

I certainly want Brendan to stay to win the league. I never talk about 10 in a row. I worry about each one as it arises. Brendan has done magnificently winning 6 out of 6 domestic problems. Fans are now concerned that there is a major problem within the club. There appears to be some sort of breakdown between Brendan and Peter Lawell. My fear is that Brendan may be planning his exit. It doesn’t look as if the team are responding to him at the moment. I don’t know for sure what is happening and what the extent of the problems are involving PL, Brendan and the squad but it needs sorting soon. PL seems to be untouchable but one thing is certain, in my opinion, if uncertainty does exist regarding the future of Brendan, then the Board should be planning now how they are going to respond. I don’t like the idea of Strachan returning. I think he might not be the type of personality to get the best out of some of our players. He seemed to have problems selecting CalMac for Scotland even though he was performing brilliantly last season.

I hope the problems can be overcome and we return to winning ways soon. Hail! Hail!

  28. its worries me that BR fails to play izzy and Gamboa – in Scotland we need players willing to hit the by line. izzy is technically gifted and Gamboa has to be better than Lustig when we have 70% possession.

BR doesn’t seem to want to change tactics – see euro trouncings! I don’t think Celtic would lose so heavily under Neil Lennon. The job he is doing at hibs is remarkable, really remarkable and not reported as so in the media, you know why.

Get him back for 10 IN A ROW

  29. BADA BING@4-44pm

One game does not make a season.

He was very good in the Sevco game but far to often the squash buckling fullback has been absent this season.
