Thank you, Celtic, growing the family

“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“*!*! you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”
“Thank you, Celtic.”

That’s the response from Scottish Premiership clubs on notification they will each receive £365k solidarity payment from Uefa for Celtic reaching the Champions League group stage. At the bottom end of the league, that will pay the wages of six members of the squad for a year.  To one and all: You’re welcome.

Further up the table, it could make the difference between being underwater and not needing to seek borrowing. Be in no doubt, this is a great day to go to work at all top flight Scottish clubs. Directors across the country, who keep their clubs afloat with personal loans, would have been on their feet cheering as Scott Sinclair’s opener hit the net – all of them.

I loved the interactive billboard campaign which launched within minutes of full time: “This is how it feels to be in the Champions League”. As a club, we are hitting all the bases right now; opening avenues for the whole of Glasgow, and Scotland, to enjoy and participate in our success. This is how it feels to grow the Celtic family.

As for the weak-minded among you: there was never any danger last night. Without profligacy in front of goal, we would have been ahead at the break. Scott Brown learned that two mistakes in quick succession is likely to lead to a goal, while Mikael Lustig satisfied his long-held curiosity as to what would happen if he was the last defender, and instead of closing down an opponent rushing towards goal, he backed off.  It would have been a great learning experience for some of the young players involved.

Rijeka couldn’t lay a glove on Olympiakos last night, while Sevilla only just clung onto their advantage over Istanbul Basaksehir, who were a goal away from qualifying for the group stage, and elevating Celtic to pot 3. Our hopes now lie with Hoffenheim overturning a 1-2 deficit at Liverpool. Pot 4 beckons. Still, I’m not complaining.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before last night?*

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 Thursday afternoon. You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

*Failure rate on this question is higher than with any previous competition.  If you know your history… ooft!  It was only four years ago.

Benfica, Seville, and Anderlecht or Basel would be a half decent draw for us…… definite chance of Progres from that group – sorry :-) and the possibility of a nice wee away trip….would love to go back to Lisbon, but any of the above would be fantastic places to visit and spread the Celtic Love.

Have you heard about the big strong Cham

    He’s now a Celtic Khan

O what a heavenly sight ,when he pulls on the green and white.

He came all the way from Italy

To play for you and me.

    Morning Celts.

Id like to see us get a decent draw for once, sick of the group of death scenario:(

  5. People are complicated by nature, often beset with contradiction……… Champagne Charles is probably no different and reasonably easy to read imo…

Sadly for him his on-field skills came and went easily. I loved him as a player. Gallus personified.

We’ve had fine players in our ranks who, on stepping down from Paradise, quickly lost their lustre.

Charley is just one in a series. Who knows what has got to him, what he has forgotten or who is in his ear now. Working where he does now. does not help.

“Thinking-wise” Charley’s no’ much kop. He was a star player on-field but not much more than an on-air utility player which gives scant credibility and an unusual accent to a monolithic media monster.

His eavesdropped on-air banter with the execrable “red, White an’ Blue” did however show a depth to his venality with his casual snyde smart commentary.

  6. Congratulations Brendan and Celtic for making the Group stages of the Champions league. It was never in doubt……. Can’t even imagine how many huns must have switched to the match on hearing it was 4-1, only to see us score the next 2, its the hope that kills you!

Gutted at being so close to pot 3. We really need to try and get some points, to get our coefficient higher, and try to get into pot 3 for next season. (Might help if a couple of other Scottish teams could go further than the first qualifying round.)

While it would be nice to get the weakest teams from each of the other 3 pots, I do like it when we have a ‘battle of britain’, and it is nice to get memorable games against some of the big names in Europe. Plus, we seem to do a little better when the odds are stacked against us, in games where no one expects us to get anything.

    My ideal draw would be:

    Benfica

    Man Utd

    Anderlecht

But would settle for avoiding Juventus and Barcelona.

Either way, its great to be looking forward to some fantastic games, can’t beat the Champions league excitement…..!!

  7. Nothing to do with the place falling apart then?

“You will have noticed at recent matches at Ibrox Stadium that roads around the perimeter of the stadium have been closed prior to and at the conclusion of the match.”

The statement continued: “Taking into account the current UK Threat Level and to ensure the safety of all spectators this new arrangement will continue until further notice. The road closures will be lifted as soon as the Safety Officer and Match Commander are satisfied that the spectators are safely away from the stadium.

“We hope you understand the reasoning behind the closures and ask for your patience and support.

“We work closely with the Safety Team at Rangers Football Club and this is an ongoing partnership that will continue as we work together to keep you all safe.”

  8. traditionalist88 on

I hope we get at least one team who are in crisis, having problems signing anyone of note and pulling the wool over their own fans eyes regarding re-signing their own star player on a new deal.

    eg. Barcelona :)

  9. I did that draw twice

why ??? UEFA usually do a practice

Both Times !!!! Man Utd and Olympiacos

1st time Shakhtar 2nd time Benfica

    Would take that….Especially Benfica

Are ` the current UK Threat Levels ` a problem for any other football ground in Scotland ?

I assume that means they don’t have to pay for policing the area for that time. Handy, huh?

  12. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

There are two possibilities. We could end up in a vicious circle, with ever more extreme and partisan sources of information reinforcing people’s prejudices and an ever more vitriolic news feed. It would not only be the reliable dissemination of local news that dies, but national news too. Or we could make a real effort to provide news literacy, to create a society that is finally as concerned with what it reads and views as with what it eats.

    The latter I feel!

  13. BMCUW

I don`t know about that. Considering the Ibrox area is obviously more affected by`the current UK Threat Levels` than everyone else in Scottish Football, I would have thought there was an even greater need for an enhanced police presence.

  14. I think it was Parkheadcumsalsford who asked for info re the Share Price.

There is a definite spike in the price this month. I haven’t had time to look at in detail apart from the fundamentals that we all know… SB’s, CL, sponsorship etc.

I’ll look back to see what happened last year at CL Qualification.

There doesn’t look to be any significant trade in shares in July/August that might indicate demand increase?

    Tab at top…Prices and trades

Looks like a 30% increase though?

Hopefully TD67 got in at a good price?

  15. The last couple of games ob exiting Celtic Park I noticed London Rd blocked off between Springield Road and the junction nearest the superstore. My bhoy told me this was now common practice at any event across the UK where there’s likely to be large amoubts of folk milling about on roads at the same time, bring mindful of the incteasing risk from ‘vehicle’ attacks. So maybe the news from The Rangers is correct.

  16. On the topic of one Charlie Nicholas as a Celtic player ( 1st time around), I adored him.

However, it should NEVER be forgotten that it was a certain wee Frankie MacGarvey who did all the spadework for Nicholas, george McCluskey and also for the Judas.

I loved wee Frankie in equal measure. In games especially against the huns Frankie would be kicked all over the pitch, dust himself down….and proceed to terrorise the hun defence.

If memory serves me correctly Frankie ( Squiddly Diddly) last act as a Celtic player was his superb winning flying header v Dundee Utd in the 1985 Cup Final ?

Soon after our manager Davie Hay sold Frank to… I can’t remember who ?

I and many other Hoops fans were shocked at Franks transfer.

I loved Davie Hay as a Celtic player, he was after all one of the Quality Street Gang, but I never forgave him for selling Frankie…..I still haven’t.

During his Celtic career, rumours were abound about Frankies gambling habit to such an extent that it was said that Frankie would sometimes not have any housekeeping money to hand over to his missus ?

I didn’t know IF that was true, but if it was I vividly remember telling my mates that IF it was true about Frankies gambling, then it could have been sorted perhaps by Celtic deducting money from his wages and thus making sure his missus got the housekeeping money ?

Looking back, maybe my idea of Celtic ( as an employer and protecting an employee ?), was somewhat ” simplistic”…..I really don’t know ?

To this day, I am still in the dark as to why Frankie was sold at that time, as imo he had at least another 3 years in him as a Celtic player.

Today of all days with the CL Draw etc, lets not even think about the smsm and/or what Nicholas etc has to say about Celtic…” what the hell do we care”.

Myself ?….I would back and put money on Celtic against ANY team at Celtic Park, no matter who they are.

However, wouldnt it be great if Celtic having met the 3 opposing teams in our group both home and away, and each aggregate score in Celtics favour were to be 8 feckin 4 ?

Wonder what the smsm would say about that……no I don’t really cos I don’t feckin care what they say !……the bassa’s.

Ah,but security concerns would be a matter for the authorities to deal with, and not the club.

Strange that Her Majesty’s Highway can be closed without any proper reason. Not sure of the legality of it either. Security reasons is entirely spurious.

  18. They are all taking the cash to suit their employers agenda.

I’ve got nothing against Charlie Nick even if he is a complete dick.

  19. Hope PR is signed by Saturday.. If not move on to next target…surely we have one? JH is not the answer. Plus a CF ASAP. Don’t wait till last minute then say we nearly got xxx but ran out of time
