Thank you, Celtic, growing the family

That’s the response from Scottish Premiership clubs on notification they will each receive £365k solidarity payment from Uefa for Celtic reaching the Champions League group stage. At the bottom end of the league, that will pay the wages of six members of the squad for a year.  To one and all: You’re welcome.

Further up the table, it could make the difference between being underwater and not needing to seek borrowing. Be in no doubt, this is a great day to go to work at all top flight Scottish clubs. Directors across the country, who keep their clubs afloat with personal loans, would have been on their feet cheering as Scott Sinclair’s opener hit the net – all of them.

I loved the interactive billboard campaign which launched within minutes of full time: “This is how it feels to be in the Champions League”. As a club, we are hitting all the bases right now; opening avenues for the whole of Glasgow, and Scotland, to enjoy and participate in our success. This is how it feels to grow the Celtic family.

As for the weak-minded among you: there was never any danger last night. Without profligacy in front of goal, we would have been ahead at the break. Scott Brown learned that two mistakes in quick succession is likely to lead to a goal, while Mikael Lustig satisfied his long-held curiosity as to what would happen if he was the last defender, and instead of closing down an opponent rushing towards goal, he backed off.  It would have been a great learning experience for some of the young players involved.

Rijeka couldn’t lay a glove on Olympiakos last night, while Sevilla only just clung onto their advantage over Istanbul Basaksehir, who were a goal away from qualifying for the group stage, and elevating Celtic to pot 3. Our hopes now lie with Hoffenheim overturning a 1-2 deficit at Liverpool. Pot 4 beckons. Still, I’m not complaining.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before last night?*

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 Thursday afternoon. You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

*Failure rate on this question is higher than with any previous competition.  If you know your history… ooft!  It was only four years ago.

Brendan’s coaching, his tactics, his management and the players response to it have seen us come through three qualifying rounds and into the CL without fielding anywhere near our best team..

Chapeau to the lot of them..

  2. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Lennybhoy, City probably want him to go elsewhere but if our two top board members were at the Etihad on Monday, to emphasise our desire to get Patrick, it may have swayed them.

However, I could be havering and not for the first time.

  3. POGMATHONYAHUN @ 7:30 PM,

Very interesting meeting documented on Celtic Underground there.

Just a quick read through but you get the feeling that Neil Doncaster is playing the part of the accused being guarded by his over protective Lawyer, Rod McKenzie, so there is no incriminating answers.

Still worth a re-read and I’ll do that, but one thing caught my eye…

“ND repeated previous public assertions that he came from a “different football culture” where newcos were “normal” and “accepted”.

    This of course is Smok’n’Mirrors

    – There are many examples of English Clubs getting into Financial Difficulties but none of them equate to the Rangers circumstances

    – English Football has a very good, I would say exemplary record of dealing with Clubs with insolvency issues

    – Financial Fair Play in Football meant that any lax “culture” that was in place in the past would could certainly not be tolerated by Governing Bodies Football Administrators since he’d become one

    – More importantly and I’m sure Mr Doncaster knows this only too well, there is no way Rangers (i)l would be allowed to continue as the same Club in England, the Rules don’t allow it, the clause that the SFA used to transfer Rangers Membership to Sevco Scotland does NOT exist in England, it is forbidden and would not have been allowed.

    Hail Hail

If those having a go at Mikel were Brazil ’70 fans they’d focus on the Italian goal from the final so they could moan about something.

*or on October 20, 1957 moaning about simpsons goal the day before.

  6. If paddy is not coming permanent then no point loaning just another headache trying to replace next year unless we mikey johnson is that good

we all make them but to berate a Player, any Player who has served us well and contributed along with the Manager to where we are today…I cannot understand it.

Fair enough.I hoped you said the same about Kris Commons when he was getting the heave ho from around 80% on here.

  8. I had harsh things to say about Mo Salah of Liverpool during last week’s game with Hoffenheim. I’m happy to retract them tonight. He has played very well and looks more than decent.

    Well played Salah.

Copenhagen win 2-1 at home but go out to Qarabag on away goals ! Wonder how that might affect Shevchenko’s future ?

  10. Definition of Windfall

‘a large amount of money that is won or received unexpectedly.’

Sick of the press referring to our earnings in the CL as a windfall – it is earned

The only windfall is the £350k the rest of the PL clubs will get for doing ziltch

  11. embramike says ” Yer team’s deid…Beat it!” on

Apoel, Liverpool, Sporting, CSKA and Qarabag complete the group stage line up.

  12. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Our former player Charlie Nicholas unfairy described Qarabag as the worst European team he had ever seen us play which was another nonsensical comment from him.

I wonder if he will say anything positive about them qualifying for the Champions League

Thoughts and prayers for anybody on who’s expecting exam results tomorrow.

Loved Kris, great Player who contributed to the Celtic cause. Love him now, he and his family just simply got Celtic.

    Keep the Faith!

Our former player Charlie Nicholas unfairy described Qarabag as the worst European team he had ever seen us play which was another nonsensical comment from him.

*selective memory,, what about the team that he missed a 4th minute penalty against and then along with Casc and wee Joe contrived tae miss sitters in the 2nd half. Could just have easily won us the tie on away goals.

The only windfall is the £350k the rest of the PL clubs will get for doing ziltch

I hope they realise they can’t use this money to repair the stand or pay their creditors (This is subject to scrutiny I believe)

    SOLIDARITY PAYMENTS

Revenue from the European club competitions also benefits top division clubs that do not participate in the competitions, and must be used for their youth development and local community programmes.

  19. i know its hard to criticise players on their performances especially those that have been great servants to the club but there comes a time when you have to admit that their best days are behind them and they are no longer up to the task or level that we aim to perform at.

  20. Embra

Seriously – it pays for a couple of coaches who they say is for youth development
