TON-UP BHOY RODGERS – A RARE GLORY NIGHT IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

0

BRENDAN RODGERS will become a Celtic Centurian today when he takes charge of the Hoops for the 100th time against Hibs.

The irishman, who replaced Ronny Deila in the Parkhead dug-out in May 2016, has lost only one of his 75 games against domestic opposition.

There have also been 64 triumphs and 10 draws.

In Europe, the story hasn’t quite followed along similar lines.

Rodgers has seen his team win eight, lose 11 and draw five of his 24 European encounters.

Overall, the champions have scored 156 Premiership goals, 22 in the Scottish Cup, 26 in the League Cup and 36 in Europe for a total of 240.

They have conceded 90 times over the same period, 45 of them in European competition.

Rodgers became only the third manager in the club’s history to complete a domestic clean sweep following the legendary Jock Stein who managed the feat twice in 1966/67 and 1968/69.

Martin O’Neill also went into the Celtic Hall of Fame when he lifted the treble in his debut season in 2000/01.

SIX OF THE BEST FOR RODGERS – A RARE EUROPEAN GLORY NIGHT

ANDERLECHT 0 CELTIC 3: Champions League (September 27, 2017)

CELTIC produced a near-impeccable performance away from home to give Rodgers his first success in the Champions League group stages in Brussels.

The Belgian title-winners were in trouble when Leigh Griffiths swept in a close-range effort after a fine cross from Kieran Tierney in the 38th minute.

Patrick Roberts forced in the second five minutes after the interval and Scott Sinclair, with an effort in stoppage time, ended a wretched run of 18 successive European ties on the road without a win.

“It was an outstanding performance,” said Rodgers. “We’re a Scottish team away from home, we’ve scored three goals and kept a clean sheet. It was impressive and a big achievement.”
