Why Morgan was bought now instead of on a pre-contract

613

What’s the difference between Celtic signing Lewis Morgan now, then loaning him back to St Mirren, or simply signing him on a pre-contract agreement to join the club on 1 June? Primarily, it is about the player’s training regime.

Celtic are paying St Mirren for the privilege of telling them how Lewis should train, what dietary rules he should follow and what developmental objectives to prioritise. He will train, rest, eat and sleep according to guidelines Celtic set out.

The cumulative effect of sports science is difficult to quantify, but it forms the basis of much of what the technical staff do at Lennoxtown.

NEW! The CQN Podcast: A Celtic State of Mind (EP28) with former Celtic director Tom Grant

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 29th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Celtic’s ex-director, Tom Grant, who offers a fascinating insight into the running of the club in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tom Grant explains exactly why Celtic refused to complete the Mo Johnston transfer in 1989, and lifts the lid on audacious efforts by Billy McNeill to recruit Peter Beardsley and Steve Bruce.

Tom Grant also dissects his relationship with Fergus McCann, and the impact of the ‘Celts For Change’ movement in overturning the ‘family dynasty’ board in 1994.

Now I know I can be daft sometimes but, are am I the ONLY person who doesn’t know how to use a walking stick ?

She said that due to years of lack of mobility, I walk very stiffly and even stiffer when using the walking stick and that she will have to loosen me up asap ?

Sounds very promising….or very painful…and it all starts this Thursday morn.

  11. FAO HUN LURKERS…

    Jamie Murphy….

It’s understood Brighton’s legal team wanted to do due diligence and a credit check on Gers being good for the whole fee agreed, including add-ons, before they signed off on his clearance.

Although the initial fee was around the £1million mark, it is understood the Seagulls are eventually looking for a full return of the £1.7m they paid Sheffield United for him.

The arrival of Murphy is a coup for Graeme Murty as he looks to strengthen his options and add goal threat to his squad ahead of the second half of the season.

The former Motherwell man has struggled for game time with the Premier League newboys this season but has been a prolific scorer in his four previous seasons down south.

FFS…How embarrassing is it that one of the Biggest Clubs in the World…The Ranjurs…is subjected to a CREDIT CHECK by another club….far less the Mighty Brighton and Hove Albion, and the ranjurs MUST have FAILED that Credit Check as the permanent sale did NOT go through !

One of those reminders that you are getting old.

I was out after the game last week and during the chat my friends and I remarked that at least Madden had not really influenced the game that much unlike the prevous Derby match at Celtic Park. We got to talking about referees in general and who the worst were.

Now I am not a great believer in the conspiracy theories surrounding referees. I do not doubt that more of the referees will have supported Rangers than Celtic in my time but think we probably do, historically, get more dodgy decisions than other Scottish teams. RH Davidson was a terrible referee who may well have hated us- but I know that the supports of two othet clubs hated him and dreaded him. The clubs? Rangers and Hearts.

One referee was I think unacceptably biased and that was Tait. An absolute Hun. JRP Gordon (Newport-on-Tay) probably was too but even with him I would temper that with the knowledge that when he gave us a penalty at Pittodrie a ref ran on and attacked him.

But this Gordon was the prime mover in the most bizzare incident I ever witnessed arva game. The infamous goal by John Greig that led to Celtic refusing to take the kick off for several minutes, me being hit on the shoulder by a half-full beer tin and mass chants of ‘Off! Off” from the Celtic end. It was one of those moments where unprecedented mayhem – on and off the pitch- seemed likely though mercifully it did not really materialise. Later in the game Gordon denied us as blatant a penalty as the one he had not given us in the first half. What a Gareth Hunt.

And it was 40 years ago today. Which is kind of depressing because urbane, jazz loving, Proust reading, liberal-minded sophisticate that I am I still bear a grudge from that day.

That 70 final was, like the European Cup Final 25 days later, one of those events that was almost character forming. I never trusted refs after the first and with the second have never been surprised by supposedly unexpected reversals- in life not just football- since.

But JRP Gordon was worse. Refuse to believe he was acting impartially that day.

Out of curiosity what survey are you highlighting?

    Is it this one?

Commissioned by the Humanist Society Scotland, a Survation poll of more than 1,000 Scottish adults found that 72.4% of them were not religious.

Gordon MacRae, chief executive of the Humanist Society Scotland, said “It’s possible people said they were, for example, Roman Catholic, even if they never attended church.”

Helpfully the article ends ‘and they’re far better off without religious dogma infesting their minds.’

  29. Been great reading the reflections of the last couple of days.I can certainly relate to those of Big Packy-we must be of the same vintage.I attended St Charles,Newton -60 to 67-and I saved a few ‘black babies’ at 2s6d a card. And a Royal Scot biscuit with tea after Mass on the First Friday of each month.

As for Celtic,my first games were during the Wilderness Years. The riot at Ibrox as a six year old;the hope of the Cup Final in ’63 quickly followed by the despair of the replay;MTK.

Now all we need is for a journalist to grow some balls and report the Murphy “transfer” as it was………Sevco have failed Brighton’s credit check and since they have totally destabilised the player he’s off on loan until the season ticket money comes in thereby enabling Sevco to pay.

There you go, just one simple sentence does it all..

  31. BMCUW,

    Imo .

Dinosaurs with their prejudices associated with football are dieing out. Eventually to the point of irrelevance or a figment of fun and contempt.

As a society we have come far. Generational change has been immense.

The bus is truly open to all, but the back seats are always available if desired.

Like yourself, mixing with peoples from all backgrounds I do not believe there is an anti Celtic bias nowadays; Indeed some may say we are the new establishment club.

Prejudice associated with football in 2018 is mainly confined to history.

Embrace the future , the future is Green and White for all.
