It is impossible to overstate the cultural, sporting and social impact of this event on millions of lives.  You are in for a year of unadulterated indulgence.  Enjoy every minute of it and if you meet a Lisbon Lion, make sure he hears what he did for you.

Thank you. Just one more question if you don’t mind. Did you ever meet up again with any of the Inter Milan team that played against you? It’s always been said they were very gracious losers ( unlike another team I could mention)

    Were they ?

    Best in the world!

It did take a while to be honest. To beat Inter Milan was an achievement in itself but for us to do it in the European Cup Final – we had over 40 shots at their goal.

It should have been 7-1 though!

  4. 1967 I was had turned 9 in March and was growing up in Millerston as part of one of the few Celtic leaning families in the place!

Went to school in Cardowan, St Joseph’s, which was a fair bit different!

My memories of the game are of the house being full of relatives and friends, not much if any drinking before the final whistle but a huge party afterwards.

I also remember my older brother literally jumping over the settee when TG equalised!

I remember that there were plenty of tears shed at the end of the game by men I had never seen cry before! My dad served his time in Harland &Wolfe and his brother was also a time served engineer. These were guys who has seen the Great Depression and the war, had lived difficult lives, lost a brother and a sister to TB, they didn’t show a lot of emotion but that night they cried and toasted those who gone before them!

Next day my mum and dad took me over to Celtic Park to see the team come home. Went over on the “Green” bus as we called it to Parkhead. Somehow we got seats at the back of the old stand near a monitor on which we could see the bus arrive outside, don’t know if this was broadcast on TVs across the country?

Getting home we had to walk back to the Parade to get the bus. Dad went in to the Real MacKay for some supplies, while my mum and me went in to the cafe for sweets and ice cream to take up the road for a second night of partying!

Great days in the company of great people!

Many thanks to all who have shared their memories,it is that sense of community which makes me so proud to be a Celtic supporter. It’s that rush of excitement and adrenaline that you get as you come up the stairs, out on to the stands at CP on European nights!

At times like that I feel close to my mum and dad who have now passed on and thank them for everything that they struggled and fought to give me and my siblings!

    YNWA at Celtic Park!

To bring things up to date I thought it was brilliant to see the vast range of people up at the ground to welcome Brendan Rodgers, old, young, men, women, all together, that’s what we are all about!

Really hoping that this sees us kick on, on and off the park. As the old saying goes “Unity is strength!

  5. Just noticed that in the 4.45 Hamilton, there is a horse called Celtic Power. Surely today of all days it must win!

Those players long before my time – in not that old! You know when I joined Celtic Jimmy McGrory was our manager.

He’d puff away on his pipe. Before the game he’d say:

Right boys you are playing for Celtic Football Club. Celtic Football Club are always expected to win. So go out and do your best!

    No tactics, nothing.

Jock Stein changed that. His first team talk was radically different. Attack but be ready to defend. Defend and be anxious to attack.

Brilliant manager – the best I played under. Years ahead of his time.?

  7. Marrakesh Express on

Jock Stein planted a seed on this day 1967. Forty-six years later Sevco was born.

I once watched you playing for a shambolic Nottingham Forrest team. You didn’t look to be a happy bunny. Was it as bad as it looked ?

What a tremendous honour to be able to say thank you to yourself and the bhoys for all that you have given us over the years!

Can I ask if you have ever struck a ball as well and as sweetly as that day in Lisbon?

You will struggle to get to the same level as the Lisbon Lions ever again. That was just about the perfect Celtic side. Goals could be scored by anyone maybe except LUGGY or THE FAITHER.

Brendan Rodgers if he is backed by the board can get us back to the level of the team that took us to Seville. That side was pretty useful!

  11. Hi Tommy, I was 15 in 1967. I seem to remember you visiting us kids at St Ninians High School, Kirky with a couple of other players. Although my memory ain’t as good as it used to be.

Just checked in my loft as I still have the original Scottish newspapers, Mail, Express, Record etc from the day after Lisbon. Also Celtic Views from around that period and a few other mementoes.

Today’s Daily Telegraph, in the London edition anyway, centre page, has a photo of Billy in Lisbon with the Big Cup plus some nice narrative in a On this Day in History feature brought to you by Royal London!

  12. Tommy, it was the feat of Corpus Christi, my dad got to mass at Sacred Heart in Bridgeton at 6am, off to the airport and made the game.

Was mass ever mentioned, or did the 7 fishes lads get special dispensation? :)

As others have said, just thank you.

I always thought that Jock and the Lions were invincible. No matter the opposition and their manager, Jockbwould outthink him and the Lions would outplay his team. We didn’t know we were living :-))

Thanks for putting a spring in my step for the last 49 years.

My 2 great-aunties were nursing sisters at Ayr County hospital and Bobby Lennox and one other Lion came to visit and show us the medals. They were spinsters and lived in Alloway.

    Were you the other Lion.?

  15. Dharma

You have not scared me off. My cousin is Angela McDermott and like I said she was born before the final whistle that day.

  16. Stairheedrammy on

Tommy, thanks, just thanks. One wee question from me, did you keep the jersey you wore in Lisbon (and did you need to pay the Kelly’s for it) or did you give it away?

  17. Tommy Gemmell on

    Wee Bobby Collins

I got quite a few kisses at that time unfortunately some were from men!

Bobby Murdoch was exceptional in Lisbon but everyone was I suppose. Solid at the back, creative in midfield and sharp as a tack upfront.

Luggy stayed back but everyone else was attacking. He wasn’t that quick but he could think quicker than anyone else.

Billy won everything in the air.

    Cool more

I would go into dressing room and get ready half an hour before everyone else. Then the rest would appear on time and then wee Jinky, who would be out blethering to his pals and supporters would appear late. Big Jock would start to give him a row but the wee man always had an excuse. It was funny and Jock understood this and used it to calm the team down.

Tommy I hope you know you set the bar so high that the first time I remember rangers (rip) beating us I cried for a week with disbelief.

The eleven selected felt sorry for the seven who never played but they had played their part in getting us to Lisbon.

Some were injured like Joe McBride who would have broken all sorts of record if he never got that injury. John Hughes was injured too.

    Twists n Turns

Yes we did. There was an Anniversary at Celtic Park.

They were losers, they didn’t have any option. If you could see their faces at the final whistle. They fully expected to win. I have never seen a team as shocked at the final whistle of a match at them that day. They were also punch drunk. If it was a boxing match it would have been stopped.

It was almost cruel. We gave them a doing.

When I joined Nottingham Forest it was a big come down from CELTIC. No tactics, no team talk.

Celtic have Chris Davies coming from Reading to be a first team coach. It is important to have good coaches. The first manager I had at Forest was rubbish.

Celtic are running a poll asking how many goals I scored.

    The options are 43, 53, 63 or 73.

They are all wrong I scored 84 but that includes friendlies. However we didn’t play friendlies so it’s 84!

    Can someone tell them!

  23. Tommy Gemmell on

Apart from penalty kicks my goals came from outside the box. When I hit the ball it stayed hit. Sometimes even the nets were scared!

I loved scoring at Ibrox both times from the penalty spot. Their chat was Gemmell is a bas***d – my mother really wasn’t pleased.

At that time the old Rangers had reached the Cup Winners Cup Final but if my memory serves me right, they got beat!

  24. All I can say Tommy is you changed our lives forever that day.

For the last 49 years we were all that bit taller, that bit stronger, that bit more confident because of you.

Saying Thank You seems so inadequate but I will say it anyway, Thank You Tommy Gemmell, we love you and always will love you.
